PlayStation 2 shipments canned - The end of a glorious videogame era

Retailers in Japan will no longer receive shipments of PlayStation 2 consoles, reports Famitsu. That means that once all current stock has been sold there will be no more PS2s for sale.
Though PlayStation 3 launched in 2006, the 12-year old PS2 has continued to sell well with estimates that more than 150 million units have been sold worldwide. With Sony looking toward its next-gen console, possibly to launch in late 2013, early 2014, the days of the PS2 finally look like they’re numbered.

Over the past few years, a mere sprinkling of titles have been developed for PS2, but such is the expansive back-catalogue of titles that Sony continued to manufacture consoles to keep up with demand which has led the PS2 to be named as the “best-selling home gaming console.”
The PS2 has spawned some massive franchises and some of the best games to have ever graced consoles, including God Of War, Shadow Of The Colossus and Grand Theft Auto. One thing we can be sure of is that the death of the PS3 isn’t going to follow any time soon. Sony has supported PS2 for 12 years and even after the release of its next console they’ll still be games developed for the PS3. Indeed, Sony has said that it will support the PS3 for at least 10 years.
Nonetheless, it feels like an end of great era and a good time to reflect on the PS2 and the joy it brought to millions of gamers around the world. Stay tuned for a feature about our favourite PS2 memories shortly. In the meantime, let us know your favourite memories of the PS2…

an era that wasn't spoiled by gimmicks to sell consoles to casual families that don't know anything about video games or modern technology (Nintendo Wii) and by a company that gives apyoffs to get exclusivity (Microsoft)

The one and only console I ever stood in line for on launch day. Needless to say, I was late for work the following morning. lol It was well worth it, and the best console I ever owned hands down. Hats off!

I would say Burnout, SSX and Zone of the Enders! Best IP's that came to life thanx to the PS2. By the way, Sony were the first to sell gimmicks to casual players with "eye toy", an idea stolen by nintendo and dropped by sony!

If by "spoiled" you mean Nintendo went from selling 21.74m Gamecubes world wide to 98.3m Wii, that would be called successfully taking a huge amount of market share from ones competition.
MS owns about a dozen developers responsibe for the lions share of their games sales, example:
Halo...37m games sales on 360 and climbing fast
Forza...Amost 14m games sold on 360 still climbing
Fable...over 9m on 360
Multiplayer games such as COD are even bigger with the lions share of sales going to 360. That's true for most mutiplat games except, for example, when Sony pays a company like Ubisoft to make more levels for the PS3 version of AC3, then we see a few hundred K more PS3 sales. That would be the "pay-off" you mentioned.
Suffice to say, MS has gone from selling 24.65m Xbox world wide to almost 74m.
So where Sony used to sell 4 or 5 PS2s for every Gamecube and Xbox, both Nintendo and MS have gained huge market share. The market has not increased by that much, there is a party that has lost huge market share and it's Sony. The PS3 is in it's 6th year of production and is down approximately 40% or 40m units compared to where the PS2 was at 6 years.
Suffice to say the PS2 was highly successful and that success may not be repeated for a long time.

Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Kingdom Hearts, MGS 2&3, God of War 1&2, Rogue Galaxy- the list could go on and on, but those were some of my favorite ps2 games/memories.....as well as taking my ps2 apart to clean the eye so it would read discs after years of use and dust haha

Ps2 was hands down the best system I ever owned as well. The titles back then were way more varied than they are today, what an incredible era that was. I still remember when I got Tekken Tag Tourney 1 (my first game for it) and my jaw dropped at the graphics. Gotta say MGS2 &3, the Tekkens, The Bouncer, and Kingdom Hearts were my fondest memories though Im sure Im missing a whole lot of others. I seriously used to go back and beat old games I owned over and over again even years after I bought them, something I just cant seem to bring myself to do as much lately.
Tenchu Wrath of Heaven was, I believe, my favorite from back then though. Hard to believe that there will probably not be another one for a very long time since stupid azz Activision refuses to make anything else anymore besides dumbazz Call of Duty. -
