The successor to the PlayStation 3 will be formally unveiled at the Destination PlayStation event in February 2013, claims Expert Reviews.
According to the report, Sony hopes that an early reveal for the PlayStation 4 – which is rumored to be codenamed Orbis – will cool hype for Microsoft’s new Xbox console.
Expert Reviews believes that Sony’s rival will launch its new console this year, while PS4 will be released in 2014.
Nothing much is known about Sony's next-generation console as of yet, though reports have suggested it will block the use of second hand games and is unlikely to be called PS4.
Microsoft is supposedly gearing up for an E3 reveal for the Xbox 720 after the console maker posted a countdown to the show last week.

Find it hard to believe a 2014 launch with news Sony is ahead of microsoft in ps4 development and it's actually the xbox720 that has got delayed. Im thinking more of a vita launch where ps4 will release in japan winter 2013 then europe and america in feb 2014. Can't see them missing the vital xmas spot and giving the Wiiu over a year head start.

I agree with Mark, except that I don't believe Nintendo is really in the conversation when it comes to Sony and MS. IMO and experience, the Wii/WiiU is something that many people pick up for younger kids, or as a secondary console to their PS or XBOX.

@3- Its funny you say that, because there are rumors of M$ wanting to do the same thing. I think your only option would be Nintendo. =)
@4- It actually wasn't the GPU causing the problems, it was the crappy cooling system that was the start of it. The other major problem, was lead free solder, the stuff is brittle under extreme heat. =)
If Sony reveals next month, I think it might be a tad too early, and should wait for E3 if the rumors happen to be true. Revealing it early could play against them, killing the hype, and sales in the long run, specially not being around the holidays, unless they wait towards the end of the year for release, which I can't imagine. Just have to wait and see.

There's nothing wrong with Sony revealing the systen next month as long as they dont release it before MS. First they need to create something MORE exciting than MS and a system that could potentially block used games IS NOT GOING TO DO IT. Every console has soem manner of restriction obviously, none are as open as a PC in order to avoid piracy and other bad hacker tendancies but creating a brand new culture of rescritciveness by blocking used games is not enticing or attractive. Taking away something only makes people want it more and it will cause people to try even harder to hack and pirate to reduce how much they spend on new games. Not every game is worth a new game price so forcing people to pay more is just going make them not want to. What they need to do is reduce dev costs, reduce game prices, offer an easier to develop for hardware and provide options, not ultimatums. Sony tried to "dreamcast" the 360 by expecting their system to be noticably better and more powerful (like the PS2 was to the dreamcast) when it didnt show in 3rd party development or on disk content no body was willing to wait the extra 6 months for it to get passed the bluray growing pains and never recovered. So they can't have a delay, they need to announce a release period and hit it with plenty of games that actually LOOK better, PLAY better and excite the player with potential that wasnt there the previous generation.

For a start, both Sony and Microsoft are BOTH stopping the use of second-hand games, but really we should look at the positive aspect this will bring:
