Rumor: PS4 to ditch the DualShock pad design

The DualShock controller will finally be retired with the launch of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation console, codenamed Orbis.

That’s according to the chaps at CVG, citing a senior games studio source who is currently beavering away on an upcoming Sony title. According to the source, the PS4’s controller has undergone numerous design changes, few of which resemble the iconic DualShock.

Sony’s R&D department has apparently been experimenting extensively with the new pad, with some prototypes featuring biometric sensors on the grips and an LDC touchscreen.

Furthermore, another source claimed that PlayStation engineers are “trying to emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita.” What does this mean exactly? Well, CVG speculates that it refers to the handheld’s touchscreen functionality, and that Sony plans to integrate its home consoles and portable devices more tightly.

Rumors pertaining to Sony’s new console have been heating up since 2013 kicked off. The latest reports point towards a pre-E3 reveal for the console, and that it will be released alongside the new Xbox in November 2013.

I guess this means I will be hunting for aftermarket controllers that look and feel like the current ones for PS3. I don't want to give it up. It's still my favorite design and I feel it's easy to use and learn. You tend to be comfortable with things you're used to for 12 years going back to PS1.

Best controller thats been in my hands. Im all for a redesign, but I hope its just as comfortable, if not better. I had a feeling that rumors like this might surface, specially when Nin has a touchscreen on theirs now. Sony has got to stay competitive.

This is really a bad move on Sony's part. Why get a rid of a controller that people have gotten use to for over the past 15 years? And lets not forget the horrible deisgn of the PS3 boomerang controller. It was like a child deisgned it. Leave the touch screens to Nintendo.

We don't need a touch screen controller, just let us have the best controller that has ever existed, that being the dual shock. This is to me, one more reason not to buy a next gen console and keep my PS3.

Instead of whining off of assumption, i'm going to hold my breath and wait what they have up their sleeve. if it turns out to be better, I'm going to laugh at the repeated hated assumptions. If it turns out to suck, then Sony will do what the they did with the "boomerang" and resort back to the precious dual-shock.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    DUALSHOCK FOREVER.
i'm 100% sure the dual shock will still be able to play most games.
Kaz is no stupid guy and most news about ps4 hardware point to premium hardcore consoles.
i'm guessing they will try to tightly incorporate a new vita meets move style controller so some game can be played like that.
just to make sure there fully compatible with the latest trends...

There is too much riding on this whole console for the controller to be a weak link. At the end of the day, it will likely be the main form of communication between gamer and console. And for that reason, sony will be 100% confident that they have a comfortable, functional, and likeable controller for the release. Chill out guys, it'll turn out good in the end.
