PS3 Game of the Month: January 2013

Thanks to a barrage of delays, 2013 looks set to be a corker in terms of triple-A software releases, with many of last year’s big guns propping up the Q1 shopping season. January has already squeezed out a heap of great titles that rank among this year’s most anticipated games, and the quality doesn’t look set stop anytime soon, with heavy hitters all due out over the next couple of months. Of course, with the next-generation of consoles on everyone’s mind, it’s easy to forget about the amount of great games that will be augmenting PS3’s extensive library, but one quick gander at 2013’s release schedule is enough to remind anyone that the current crop of platforms have plenty to offer still.

Right now though we’re firmly fixed on January, which didn’t disappoint. First up, we have DmC: Devil May Cry, the ambitious reboot of Capcom’s venerable hack-‘em-up series from developer Ninja Theory. Despite all the controversy that attracted the title upon its 2010 reveal – mainly due to the colour of Dante’s hair of all things – Ninja Theory proved that they had the stones to take on a beloved franchise and give it a contemporary edge.

Yes, Dante’s now half-angel, half-devil, but the core gameplay remains; players are still able to rack up insane and satisfying combos with an assortment of weapons, and the action remains as stylish as ever, right down to the awesome soundtrack by Combichrist. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch meanwhile is perhaps one of the best JRPGs of this generation of console, offering meticulously-crafted visuals, endearing characters and solid combat, all wrapped up in one vibrant, 40+ hour quest. In addition, January also saw the release of Ron Gilbert’s intriguing downloadable romp The Cave, while the U.S. got their hands on yet another high-definition package in the shape of The Hitman Trilogy.

So, all in all, not a shabby start to the year by any means, though here at PSU Towers there was one clear favourite amongst the staff. While DmC got a look-in and definitely won over some hardcore fans of the series at PSU, it was Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch that ultimately bagged our Game of the Month accolade, and deservedly so. Quite simply this charming JRPG is not to be missed, as our U.K. wordsmith Steven Williamson explains in his review.

"Overall, Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch is a stunning combination of engaging narrative, beautiful animation and engaging JRPG gameplay and, for the most part, I’ve spent a large part of this game with a massive grin on my face."
