[UPDATE] PS3 firmware 4.40 update is now live

UPDATE: According to the source listings on Wikipedia, the only changes in PS3 firmware 4.40 include improved system stability and fixed issues with certain games.

Hot and fresh out of the Sony kitchen is an official, but slightly spontaneous, firmware update for the PlayStation 3.
It seems spontaneous, because firmware 4.40 wasn't detailed or announced prior to its release. However, it's been confirmed by PSNStores via Twitter that the update is mandatory. Since it is mandatory, it could simply be to strengthen the PS3 software to avoid any potential exploits found by hackers and jailbreakers. This is purely speculation, and Sony will more than likely not detail the specific reasons validating the update, but Sony is good to detail what updates change.
Once we know for certain what the firmware update changes or enhances, we'll update this thread.

There WAS an exploit yesterday that allowed all ps2 games to be played via the psn classics emulator.

That is true but anybody that can use it is on custom firmware and wouldn't be stupid enough to update to an official firmware, unless of course you like shotty networking and getting features taken away.

lets just hope, its an update to allow us to play PS2 games on any ps3, as it has now been officially proven to be capable on cfw. Just allow us to install from a ps2 disk, and do a diskcheck to make need the disk in drive.

Actually there are Updates that arent mandatory but you rarely hear about them unless it's to fix a problem for a specific region or unless you do a search randomly on your own even though you werent alerted. Presumably those updates get included in the required updates but you dont need to have them before hand.

After i update this 4.40ofw then i played transformers revenge of the fallen(Ps3 Phat) for 5-6 minutes then after selecting a level my ps3 just went freezing,It turns blank i mean the tv screen went black screen and nothing to see but my ps3 has green and blue lights.Pls help me why?.I tried playing other games and after 5-6 minutes or longer then after selecting/finish a level then my ps3 went freezing.Please help me why?

I downloaded the 4.40 update, it loaded up to 99% and just stayed there. its not a freeze up because the ads in the upper right corner are still running. this is my 3rd attempt, same results. the only way out is to either hit cancel or turn off the system in witch case im back to square 1.call of duty black ops will not let me play without the update. What do i do?
