Dark Souls 2 will not release on next-gen systems, producer confirms
Speculation that From Software would offer a simultaneous release of Dark Souls 2 on current-gen and next-gen platforms was put to rest today as producer Yui Tanimura said the team has no intention of releasing the game on next-gen systems.
In an interview with the folks at CVG, Tanimura confirmed there were discussions at the studio about putting Dark Souls 2 on PS4 and NextBox, but the team ultimately opted for a speedier release schedule. Despite holding off on a next-gen release, he said the development team feels there is plenty it can do with current-gen systems.
“We wanted to deliver something to fans as soon as possible,” Tanimura said. “We still feel there’s potential and ability for us to express a little bit more than what we did with Dark Souls, even on current-gen consoles. We hope to stay on current consoles, but express a little bit more, and elaborate on what we were able to communicate with Dark Souls."
He added: “Right now there’s no intent to have Dark Souls on next-gen.”
These things have a tendency to change, but for now Dark Souls 2 will release on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 later this year or early 2014. Upset with the decision? Let us know in the comments section below. Be sure to check our analysis of the recent gameplay reveal.
