Will and Kyle talk: Grand Theft Auto V

PSU staff writer Will Robinson and managing editor Kyle Prahl have been friends for years. They've been talking about video games since they bonded over teenage matches of Star Wars: Battlefront. Every time they watch anime, Kyle falls asleep.

This is their series.

Kyle
So you just finished watching the GTA V gameplay trailer. I caught it this morning, but I haven't had time to watch with a closer eye. What do you think?

Will
I'm happy that they came out with gamplay footage. I had completely lost all interest in GTA V, but seeing the game in action has put on the top of my list of games to get.

Kyle
Haha I know exactly what you mean, I forget how badly I want another GTA and every time they release another video, I'm reminded again.

Especially one in San Andreas, going back to my favorite GTA region and reincorporating a lot of the same mechanics that I thought made GTA:SA so special--RPG stats, life customization, the California mix of mountainous countryside and urban density.

Will
Yeah, I'm really curious what kind of easter eggs they'll have calling back to GTA San Andreas in the world. It would be awesome if they had CJ and Big Smoke's houses remade as landmarks or something.

It also seems like a really sensible evolution. It looks even more realistic than GTA IV, but as soon as you see it in action you automatically know you're looking at a GTA game

Kyle
I think in some ways it looks more realistic. The mini-games like golf and tennis, the side activities like investments and purchasing property, having to manage your character stats and carefully select a crew for your heists...

But in other ways, less so. But that's a good thing--the ways in which I see it being less realistic include the car handling, which looks mercifully easier than GTA IV. The tone of the game also seems a bit less serious, a bit less melancholic.

Will
I meant realistic in terms of visuals, but yeah I agree with what your saying. The fact that there are stock and property markets in the game is ridiculously amazing. Also how they closed the video by previewing the multiplayer was aweseome. Just a guy standing in his skyscraper apartment looking out at tons of players driving around and then a player controlled jet flys right in front. It looks sooooo much better than IV.

Kyle
hahaha, IV had a pretty rough multiplayer setup, when it comes down to it

I mean, there was never an opportunity for that kind of natural chaos to develop on its own. Some vehicles were removed, weapons were hard to find, etc.

And if I recall, there wasn't any natural matchmaking where I could hook up with a friend or two and then be placed in a game world with other randoms/parties.

Another really important thing I noticed in the trailer: it looks like no more lock-on targeting

Interestingly, Rockstar has kind of been moving towards this in recent years. Red Dead had a looser lock-on system than GTA, Max Payne's snap-to-target was completely optional (and disabled some trophies)

but it reminds me of Saints Row, the other major sandbox crime game, which has never had lock-on aiming. Kinda weird to see Rockstar finally borrow something from the competition, even if it was a natural evolution to that

Will
GTA IV has the option to turn off auto-aim, so the video could just be showing the player's preference. I doubt that they would entirely remove it from the game since it's been there since III, but it's possible they did.

Kyle
If it's an option, or if free-aim is the default, how do you feel about playing with free-aim? From the looks of things, they've improved the aiming IMMENSELY, probably with that playstyle in mind. Looks to be much smoother now.

Will
Yeah, from what was shown, it looks like that's what they're "aiming" for. If it is the default I'll stick with it and most people probably won't even notice that lock-on is gone. Like you said, it looks like they totally revamped it and made it way more polished.

Kyle
other than that, I'm really excited by how deep the mini-games look. I'll spend hours just playing full-scale golf, if it's deep enough

Don't even get me started on bike races

Also, don't get me started on Trevor. I don't know what it is. I just don't like his character.

Will
I think that's the point. He's supposed to be a crazy, disgusting creep. lol

Kyle
Then why do I have to play as him?

Will
To know his pain

there are only a few missions where you are forced to play as each character from what Rockstar said. Mostly, you can pick who you want to play as and stick with them for most of the game if you want to.

Kyle
The real question is, will I be able to do everything I want in this game before PS4 comes out?

Hell, before Beyond: Two Souls and South Park: Stick of Truth, for that matter

Will
If you don't sleep or plan on getting the platinum, then maybe?

Kyle
Haha if it's anything like GTA IV's platinum, I won't bother

Will
I might, if they leave out stupid multiplayer trophies or have reasonable ones.

Kyle
Day-one purchase, then?

Will
all depends if I want to spend the money when it comes out. I'll definitely get it at some point, but I don't mind holding off.

Kyle
At least there's no Roman.

Will
Hey, I liked Roman. He made me feel like a winner. lol

Kyle
He reminded me of Al from Al's Toy Barn in Toy Story 2. That guy always creeped me out, with his dusty cheese puff fingers.

Will
Interesting connection. I actually did like Roman's character. I like GTA IV a ton overall. Never really understood why people decided to hate it.

Kyle
I loved it too. One of the first truly great PS3 games, imo.

Will
I still remember the first time I saw Niko fly out the windshield when I hit a post at full speed. Its always the little things that impress me the most about those games.
