Destiny trolls will be thwarted by kindness, says Bungie

Spend a couple dozen minutes with most any online shooter that allows crouching, and you're bound to see it--the infamous "tea bag," arguably popularized by Halo: Combat Evolved's suggestive dip, is a plague that must be stopped.

That's what Bungie says. And they've got a plan for how the buck stops with Destiny.

"If you look back at online multiplayer gaming for the last ten years, the dominant thread has been adolescent males shooting each other in the face and squatting on each other's corpses," Bungie technical director Chris Butcher told EDGE. "That emerges from design decisions. The community gets attracted towards that, and that is popular to a lot of other people and so it tends to exclude others."

Now, Bungie won't be aggressively quelling this behavior. Instead, a set of cooperative animations mapped to the D-pad will establish an atmosphere of teamwork and friendly service. You press Up to wave, Down to dance, Left to salute, and Right to point.

Gently pushing players to more collaborative treatment of fellow adventurers is part of what Bungie is internally calling "sloping the floor."

Do you think kinder animations will gradually change the online shooting community over time? Is this problem too big for Destiny to solve alone? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
