Assassin’s Creed 4 developer talks size of game world, claiming it will be 60 times bigger than past instalments

In an interview with Gamezone, Creative Director Jean Guesdon said there will be as much land as ocean in this latest instalment of the open world action-adventure so players will be encouraged to stray off the beaten track in search for hidden islands.

"Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’s Caribbean world is massive indeed. If we take absolute numbers, it’s way bigger than any other Assassin’s Creed instalment – probably around 60 times bigger, but the ocean helps a lot," said Guesdon.

"In fact, we have roughly the same amount of ground surface, but we made the decision to scatter this land across the entire ocean, which is procedurally generated. This has mainly been made to make sure we were representing the Caribbean in the best possible way. Adventure, exploration, discovering islands and reaching far destinations were core to the experience we wanted to deliver."

Assassin’s Creed IV will be set across 50 locations including Havana, Kingston and Nassau with a rough balance of 60 percent land and 40 percent water to explore. Ubisoft Montreal says that it will have a more open world feel than previous iterations with players having plenty of opportunities to explore rather than being inundated with scripted moments.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is due for release on multiple platforms on November 1, 2013.
