5 best PlayStation 4/Vita announcements from Sony's Gamescom press conference
If you tuned into Sony’s press conference live from Gamescom 2013 yesterday, you’ll have your own opinion over what excited you and what you’re looking forward to from PS3, PS4 and Vita.
Here’s our highlights…
1. Twitch integration
Integrating Twitch into PlayStation 4 opens up a world of opportunity for gamers. Twitch is an online video platform that will allow gamers to stream PS4 gameplay to other users and to watch streamed footage via the console’s interface.
Looking for tips on how to play a certain game or seeking a quick walkthrough of level? Then you’ll be able to find it in “spectate” mode, or create those videos yourself simply by hitting the PS4 share button. Twitch is massive for social gaming and a great chance for millions of gamers to show off their skills, demonstrate glitches and general have a good time integrating with the PlayStation community.
2. Five brand new PS4 titles
Okay, so we didn’t hear about Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, or anything as exciting, but the new games that were revealed did look superb. There’s Rime, which looks as inviting as Journey was on PSN. Then there’s HellDivers, the co-op based squad shooter. There’s Shadow of the Beast, the remake of the 1989 Amiga side-scroller. Resogun ,from the brilliant Housemarque, and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, which isn’t actually a Bioshock spin-off but a Cry-Engine powered adventure that looks really intriguing. These great titles add to an exciting launch line-up for PS4.
3. The release date is this year. Get in there!
We can’t say we weren’t nervous about the PS4 release date after Microsoft messed up the Xbox One launch in some countries this year, so we’re delighted to discover that we’ll be getting our hands on the PS4 in Europe on September 29th and September 15th in the U.S. This means a happy Christmas is guaranteed for all, well those who have pre-ordered the PS4 anyway. If you haven’t, you better start queuing, or saving your pocket money to buy it at an inflated price on eBay from any number of unscrupulous money-grabbers who bought more than one in order to sell them on.
4. Remote Play between PS4 and Vita
Remote Play between PS4 and Vita will be available for most games. Hooray! That means we’ll be able to lounge back on our settees, wander around the house and sit on the loo while playing games such as Assassin’s Creed IV : Black Flag and Gran Turismo 6. Now all we need is stable Wi-Fi connections in hotels, on trains and better Wi-Fi options while on the move.
5. Memory Card price drop and PS Vita price cut
Memory cards were a rip-off in the first place for Vita, but at least now we can pick up extra cards for our handheld at a cheaper price, as well as the Vita itself which now costs 199 EUROS for the Wi-Fi/3G version. With a ton of Vita games incoming and a fair few titles already on the handheld that are certainly worth your time, then there’s never been a better time to pick Vita. Make sure you get a PS4 too. These two are a match made in heaven.
