Sony’s PlayStation 4 will be released in Japan/Asia Pacific in the last week of December, reports CoveringTech.
That’s at least according to an anonymous source with the site, who wouldn’t be drawn into giving an exact release date other than it would be released near Christmas.
In addition, Sony has yet to confirm a price point for the machine in Japanese territories. However, the company will host a press event on September 9, where it is believed full launch details for Japan will be unveiled.
Sony announced at Gamescom this week that its next-generation console will be released in North America on November 15, with PAL regions receiving the platform on November 29. PS4 will retail for $399/£349.
Traditionally, Sony consoles have launched in Japan months ahead of Europe, and in many cases the U.S., too. The original PlayStation was released on its home turf in December 1994, and didn’t arrive in the west until September the following year.
PlayStation 2 hit Japan in March 2000, and launched in the U.S. in October and November in Europe. PS3 marked the beginning of a tighter release schedule however; the console hit Japan and North America in November 2006, though Europe had to wait until March 2007.
