Tomb Raider has sold over 4 million, confirms Square Enix

Square Enix has announced that its critically-acclaimed Tomb Raider reboot has shifted over four million copies globally since its launch in March 2013.

Writing in a blog post on Gamasutra (via VG247), Square Enix’s North American and European studio boss Darrell Gallagher also revealed that Sleeping Dogs, released in August 2012, has achieved profitability for the publishing giant.

Having originally released to underwhelming sales, the action-adventure nonetheless maintained a healthy user base of 500,000 players per month.

In addition, the three-year-old Just Cause 2 continues to pull in the punters with the same number of monthly gamers.

The perennial popularity of these two games has resulted in Square Enix’s new-found commitment to creating more persistent online titles.

“We see the opportunity for some of our games continuing beyond a traditional beginning, middle, and end,” commented Gallagher. “We can have them become extendable and more persistent – with an opportunity to build and grow across games. To design in a way to keep our games alive for years instead of weeks.

“I’m not talking about an MMORPG – although the concept is similar – I’m talking about creating persistent online experiences built on the foundations of the games we are well known for.

“Now, this doesn’t apply to every game, there is no one solution that works in every case, but as a wider goal it’s certainly something which some of our franchises are incredibly well suited to and something I want to explore further.”

Square Enix previously confirmed that the sequel to Tomb Raider is currently “well into development” for next-generation consoles.
