Battlefield 4 review round-up

Electronic Arts has kicked off the annual shoot-‘em-up slugfest between Battlefield and Call of Duty, with the release of the fourth installment in its critically-acclaimed Battlefield series for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Set in the year 2020, Battlefield 4 finds tensions between the U.S. and Russia have reached boiling point following the simmering events of the past six years. Developer DICE has injected some notable changes into the formula, including the ability to wield dual-scoped weapons, melee counter attacks, firing a sidearm while swimming and evading enemy detection by diving underwater.
Multiplayer also makes a return as you’d expect, and signals the return of the Commander Mode interface, giving gamers a tactical viewpoint similar to that of an RTS game. Next-gen versions of the game will support up to 64 players, and there’s also a spectator mode for those who want to kick back and watch the action unfold without getting their hands dirty.
More than anything though, Battlefield is perhaps synonymous with providing some of the most scrumptious visuals seen on a home console, and in this respect Battlefield 4 certainly lives up to the series’ reputation. Even on PS3, the game looks stunning, and early reports indicate the PS4 version - due out on November 15 and November 29 in the U.S. and Europe, respectively - trumps its Xbox One counterpart in this respect.
Still, can the franchise hold up from a gameplay point of view? It is in danger of subjecting itself to the same FPS brand fatigue as Call of Duty? Check out the review round-up below to see what the critics have to say.
