A successor to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is expected to arrive on shelves in five or six years time, according to the executive vice president of EA Studios.
Speaking to MCV, Patrick Soderlund said that the current cycle has lasted longer than anticipated, though reckons PS5 and a new Xbox won’t take as long to see the light of day.
"This console cycle [360/PS3] may have gone on a little bit longer than I would have wanted," Soderlund said. "At the same time, you have seen games like The Last of Us and GTA V at the end of a cycle which perhaps you would not have expected a few years ago. But a five, six year gap is what I expect going forward."
As it stands, PS3 has just celebrated its seventh anniversary in the U.S. and Japan, and will pass the milestone in Europe next March. Xbox 360 is eight years old, having launched a full year before Sony’s current-generation system.
PS4 is due out in the U.K. and Europe tomorrow, having previously launched in the U.S. on November 15. Xbox One was released on November 22 in both territories.
