Following the disbandment of famed WipEout creator, Sony Liverpool - previously that of PSone developer, Psygnosis – fans were up in arms as to what would happen to its renowned and robust list of IPs. Luckily, it’s been confirmed today, via a press release, that a number of ex-employees have combined to form an entirely new Liverpool-based studio – Firesprite.

“At the start we looked back at the games we delivered over the past 20 years. Our journey goes back to Psygnosis and through to Studio Liverpool. Individuals on the team have worked on games that shaped the industry including titles for hardware launches that span PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3 and PS Vita. The next step of that journey is Firesprite” says Managing Director Graeme Ankers via a statement.

The team is perhaps best known for having a hand in such seminal games as: Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast, MotorStorm, Rollcage, Colony Wars, and WipEout among countless others. And now look set to continue creating games on multiple platforms - including mobiles - honing each system’s key strengths.

Prior to the announcement, Firesprite had actually contributed to the SCE WWS Japan Studio-developed PS4 title, The PlayRoom – providing assistance in the visual aspects of the game.
