Ubisoft has revealed that the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag DLC, Freedom Cry, will contain hints to the direction of the next installment in the annual historical action-adventure franchise.
Speaking to Eurogamer, the French publisher confirmed the DLC, which stars Edward Kenway’s first mate Adewale, contains new locations such Port-au-Prince and is set 15 years after the events of the main campaign.
“You’re going to a new setting with new crowd life,” said Ubisoft’s Wesley Pincombe. “New enemies, new AI. Port-au-Prince is a French colony - there are no French colonies in Black Flag so that is all new”
"This is primarily an Adéwalé story - Edward isn't present - but we do shoot a couple of lines back and forth with him reminiscing about his past."
"There are some [hints] but our fans will only discover them in the future," Pincombe added. "They're in your face, but you'd have to be a hardcore fan to understand them." Keep an eye out for anything to do with the French Revolution/Japan/Victorian London/Egypt then.”
Sadly, fantasy enthusiasts will be left disappointed by the omission of the Kraken, a legendary, squid-like sea monster said to be capable of toppling even the mightiest of ships with its massive tentacles. The beast was a major fan request for Black Flag since its announcement last year.
"I'm going to have to disappoint some people - no, we didn't put the kraken in," said Pincombe. "I'll even say it was part of our conception at one point. We were going to do some fantasy missions to do with piracy and the Caribbean at one point but we changed our direction in conception.
"We wanted to continue the story of Black Flag in the DLC. Aside from the fantasy stuff we were looking at different types of assassins - we were looking at Mary Reade and Duncan Walpole to figure out their origin stories but Adewalé really had a strong presence on screen."
Interestingly enough, Ubisoft included a Kraken-like creature as an Easter Egg in Assassin’s Creed II during one of the Assassins Tomb locations.
