DOOM reaches 20th Anniversary, celebrations across the web

DOOM is 20 years old today, which has sparked celebration on many gaming websites.

The game was originally released for PC, and is regarded as being one of the most important titles in the evolution of the first person shooter--perhaps the most important genre in modern gaming. It was also a highly controversial title due to potential links seen to the Columbine High School massacre, as the tragedy's perpetrators were players. Its cultural relevance in both respects might explain why it is being covered by websites such as that of British newspaper The Telegraph, and not just mainstream gaming sites.

A version of DOOM was released for PlayStation in 1995, which contained many of the levels seen in the PC release and its sequel. However, it differed from both titles, most notably because it had a different soundtrack and some levels were excised.

It is only since 2012, with the releases of DOOM 3: BFG Edition on PlayStation 3 and DOOM Classic Complete on PS3 via PSN, that a version of the original saw release on a PlayStation console. The version in those packages aren't exactly the same as the PC original, though--it is a port of Ultimate DOOM, which contains a brutal additional campaign charmingly entitled 'Thy Flesh Consumed'.
