The Last of Us tops Amazon's Fan Favorites 2013 poll
Amazon on January 6 published the results of its 2013 Fan Favorites poll for video games to the Amazon Video Games Facebook page. The results came in the form of a snazzy pie chart featuring ten titles that are indeed considered excellent:
1. The Last of Us
2. Grand Theft Auto V
3. Bioshock Infinite
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
6. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
7. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
8. Tomb Raider
9. Fire Emblem: Awakening
10. Battlefield 4
The fact that Naughty Dog’s critically-acclaimed title, The Last of Us, took the number one spot is no surprise. Gamers have been raving about The Last of Us since its release in June of 2013. The news here lies in the margin between the first spot and the second spot, as shown in Amazon’s pie chart.
Out of ten games, The Last of Us took almost half the votes. The votes for Grand Theft Auto V, BioShock Infinite, Super Mario 3D world, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Ni no Kuni, and Assassin’s Creed IV COMBINED approximately match the number of votes for The Last of Us alone—and those are stellar games.
In fact, every game on this list is incredible and deserving. Of all the video games that released in 2013, these ten were voted to be the shining stars. That’s a big deal. The games in spots 2-10 may have been surpassed by The Last of Us (overwhelmingly so), but to call them defeated would be a big mistake. Even so, with four major hit franchises under its belt, including Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted, Naughty Dog has proven itself as the studio to beat.
Notable on the list is the number 4 game, Super Mario 3D world for the Wii U. After the infamously sluggish sales of the Wii U, Nintendo desperately needed to make it onto a list like this. The latter months of 2013 saw a 340% rise in Wii U sales. Public perception of the Wii U is still largely negative, but with sales numbers comparable to its competition (though acquired over a much larger span of time), Nintendo is slowly earning its chance to continue that growth and bring a little more competition to a race that PlayStation has so far dominated.
Also notable is the fact that Call of Duty: Ghosts did not make this list. Despite glaring problems since its launch, and despite Activision’s claim back in November that Call of Duty: Ghosts is the most-played game on Xbox One and PS4, Battlefield 4 just managed to slip into the tenth spot without its rival.
2014, meanwhile, promises to be a great year for gamers, with incredible titles already in the lineup.
