PS4 vs Xbox One: NPD December data reveals Microsoft victory

PlayStation 4 was outsold by Xbox One in North America last month, the latest NPD data has confirmed.

Microsoft’s next-generation console shifted 908,000 units in the U.S. in December 2013, beating out Sony’s new platform, which was plagued by stock issues over the holidays.

However, Sony was quick to observe that the PS4 remains the highest-selling console overall in the U.S., and is still winning the war globally, with 4.2 million hardware units shifted since launch on November 15.

"According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next-gen console sales in the U.S. since its launch on Nov. 15," said Sony’s Dan Race in a statement. "We sold every PS4 available at retail in the U.S. and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand."

"It's clear that the PS4's gaming and entertainment features are resonating with large audiences and we're doing our best to provide additional inventory in all of the 53 countries where it's available."

PS4 has a number of high-profile titles due out in early 2014, including inFamous: Second Son, DriveClub and Tomb Raider.
