Destiny will be 'best-selling video game in history,' predicts Activision

During Activision's earnings call today, CEO Bobby Kotick proclaimed Bungie's sci-fi shooter Destiny will be "the best-selling video game in history."

That's no small statement, or feat, as Destiny will be going up against Wii Sports' 81.99 million units sold. On a more serious note, Activision's other big franchise (not the billion-dollar Skylanders, the other one) sets new sales records on an almost yearly basis. Meanwhile, Destiny is a brand-new IP with only Bungie's (admittedly, impressive) pedigree to stand on.

As Joystiq reports, in 2013, Activision reported $4.58 billion in revenue--a 5.76 percent decrease versus 2012's earnings. But its 2013 fourth quarter, bolstered by holiday sales of everything from Skylanders to Call of Duty, alongside payouts from World of Warcraft's 7.8 million subscribers, earned $1.52 billion in revenue, a sizable leap past Activision's own $1.26 billion projection.

What kind of dent Destiny, whose screenshots and trailers have been appetizingly paced, will have on Activision's bottom line in 2014 remains to be seen, but with simultaneous launch on PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 come September 9, you'll likely see sales comparisons drawn with the year's biggest titles--including the next Call of Duty, currently in development at Sledgehammer Games.
