Game of the Month: April 2014

Chances are most of us used April to start saving those pennies (or cents, for our chums across the pond) after the tidal wave of triple-A titles that accompanied March. Then again, that’s not to say that last month wasn’t without some games worth your hard-earned cash; rather, it was just a little on the quieter side in comparison to March’s software blowout.

Aside from Final Fantasy XIV:  Realm Reborn arriving on PlayStation 4, we were also treated to a few other gems including Trials Fusion, LEGO: The Hobbit, Sly Trilogy (PS Vita) and the idiosyncratic Octodad: Dadliest Catch. Biggest disappointment of the month sadly has to go to Daylight, which despite promising a return to classic survival horror trappings proved too formulaic to warrant a purchase.

So, which title ultimately got slapped with our Game of the Month accolade? Well, the voting this time around was a near-unanimous cry for Square Enix’s long-awaited PS4 rendition of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. A far cry from the humble beginnings of FFXIV’s original release on PC back in 2010, A Realm Reborn not only sprinkles the proceedings in a coat of glorious 1080p paint, but more importantly, irons out all the wrinkles that marred the original release, even surpassing the already-excellent PS3 version.

Check out our summary of the game below, and read the full review by PSU.com’s Ben Shillabeer-Hall here.

"Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on PS4 is better balanced and more fun than the already excellent PS3 version was at launch. Graphical splendor, framerate improvements, and the comfort of DualShock 4 push it to the next level–PS4 is arguably the very best place to experience Square’s powerhouse MMO. New features help new players catch up with experienced veterans while concurrently giving the veteran players something to push toward. Overall, A Realm Reborn comes close to being a perfect mix of hardcore and casual role-playing, and comes highly recommended as a result."
