PS4 continues U.S. dominance as it outsells Xbox One for fourth consecutive month

PlayStation 4 outsold Xbox One in the U.S. for a fourth consecutive month, the NPD Group has revealed today.

While Sony hasn’t divulged exact figures for its latest home console for the month of April - and to be honest, this shouldn’t come as a surprise given it was as equally tight-lipped in the PS3 era - we know it beat Xbox One’s 115,000 sell-through.

Said Liam Callahan, an analyst with NPD: “Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 through their first six months of sales.

“PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40 per cent compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months. Wii U software sales were up over last year by over 80 per cent.”

The good news continued for Sony over on the software front, too. Sucker Punch’s super-powered adventure inFAMOUS: Second Son took the crown as April’s biggest-selling game for next-generation systems.

Reacting to the figures, the hardware giant noted that PS4 demand “continues to outstrip supply” but assured consumers it is “working incredibly hard to provide additional inventory.”

April also proved healthy for the industry as a whole, with total sales up 17 per cent year-on-year to $580.3 million.

Sony recently posted a $1.25 billion loss for Q4, and confirmed just last month that PS4 had sold seven million units worldwide.
