Sony is partnering with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Culture Development (OPCD) to facilitate the release of its flagship home console, the PlayStation 4, in Chinese territories.
The announcement follows on the heels of Xbox One’s planned move into China. Curiously enough, Shanghai Media Group - of which OCPD is a part of - is also home to Xbox One’s Chinese partner firm, BesTV.
Two companies are being forged out of the PS4’s Chinese debut: Shanghai Oriental Pearl Sony Computer Entertainment Culture Development and SCE Shanghai. The former handles manufacturing and sales of PS4, while the latter oversees services, sales, licensing, distribution, and software R&D.
It isn’t yet known when the PS4 will be released in China, though we expect to hear something in the coming months. Xbox One will arrive in the country this September.
Stay tuned to PSU for more details.
