Upcoming PS4 games support download and installation before release

The ability to pre-load unreleased games via PlayStation Network, so that your digital purchases are ready to play at (presumably) midnight on release day, has been a touted and anticipated PS4 feature for some. With several upcoming titles, it’s finally happening.

Over on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony Network Entertainment digital distribution manager Chieh Chen tells us about 10 games, all featured or announced during last week’s E3 2014, that can be pre-ordered on the PlayStation Store right now. “We all know that some of the biggest games can take a while to download,” Chen says (and boy, ain’t that the truth). “. . . with the pre-load functionality, you’ll be able to download and install those huge files up to several days in advance.”

Perhaps the best part (besides that “several days in advance” bit) is that pre-loading will automatically initiate as the game’s release date approaches. On the off chance you forget that you pre-ordered a particular game, PS4 will take care of that download for you, so long as you leave it in Standby Mode.

Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, to be released on June 24, has the honor of being PS4’s first game compatible with automatic pre-loading. Any PS4 game made available for pre-order on PlayStation Store on or after May 20, 2014 will have automatic pre-loading. As of E3 2014, they include:

Battlefield: Hardline
Battlefield: Hardline Deluxe Edition
Bloodborne
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Destiny
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Far Cry 4
inFAMOUS: First Light
Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare
LittleBigPlanet 3
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
The Order: 1886
Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
