1. GTA VI Release Date
Rumour 1 - 2017
GTA VI is currently rumoured to be released in 2017. Though its pure speculation, the strongest hint that Rockstar is working toward a three-year launch goal stems from an Easter Egg discovered in GTA V that reveals: “Vercetti will be back in two thousand and seventeen”.
The Vercetti’s were the crime family who plied their trade in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The Easter Egg ties in with the rumour below about GTA VI’s potential setting. See the video in section 2, which reveals Rockstar’s well-hidden clue about GTA VI’s release date.
2. GTA VI Setting
Rumour 1 – Return to Vice City
The same Easter Egg found in GTA V for a possible GTA VI release date also gives us the strongest clue that Rockstar may take us back to Vice City. The clue “Vercetti will be back in two thousand and seventeen. Be ready not afraid,” which can be seen via the video below, likely refers to protagonist Tommy Vercetti, who made his debut in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002. Of course, just because Vercetti is coming back doesn’t mean that he’ll still be cracking skulls on the streets of Vice City, but there are further clues that point to the revival of this much-loved location.
Take a look at the pattern that Rockstar has followed for its last two games. Rockstar has already taken the settings from two of GTA games that have appeared on PlayStation 2 and have overhauled them in order to do them justice on more powerful consoles.
GTA IV took us back to Liberty City from GTA III and GTA V took us back to a revamped San Andreas from GTA San Andreas. Continue in that same vein and GTA VI could well bring us back to Vice City from GTA Vice City. Indeed, rumour has it that GTA VI could be called GTA VI: Return to Vice City.
Here’s the timeline:
GTA III – Liberty City
GTA Vice City – Vice City
GTA San Andreas – San Andreas
GTAIV – Liberty City
GTA V – San Andreas
GTA VI - ?
Rockstar hasn’t dismissed the idea either. Back in 2012, in an interview with Digital Trends, Leslie Benzies, President of GTA V developer Rockstar North, said that a return to Vice City in the modern day probably wouldn’t feel right, but he also said: “It is always a possibility. There are a few references to the city in our current-gen GTAs so it is part of that HD universe, and it is certainly somewhere we would love to revisit.”
Rumour 2 – Back to Liberty City
In March, DJ Whoo Kid, the American hip hop DJ, appeared to leak details about a new Grand Theft Auto Game. In an interview with BallerStatus, in which he was asked which videogames he’d been in, he said: “Call Of Duty and I was in some Grand Theft Auto games. I'm bout [sic] to be in the new Grand Theft Auto that takes place in New York again.” Liberty City was, of course, modelled on New York.
He’s since told TheGTABase that his comments could have been misinterpreted. Or, perhaps he could be trying to now cover up his comments after facing the wrath of Rockstar, who is always very secretive with its plans? There’s also the suggestion that he may be referring to a new content update for GTA Online as Rockstar looks to expand the multiplayer game world.
That’s it for now. Check back periodically as we’ll be updating the GTA VI rumour hub as we receive more information.----
