User-created LBP levels face unexplained deletion

What would Monday morning be without a little tabloid scandal? No, we aren't talking about Obama and stem cell research, or jailed football players - this week's leader is none other than Media Molecule's justly heralded LittleBigPlanet.

According to this thread at the LittleBigPlanet forums, swathes of home-made levels are facing mysterious deletion. Given that the average LittleBigPlanet level can take days to conceive, create and test, many players are getting rather irate.

The culprit may well be this particular clause from Sony's new Electronic User Licensing Agreement (EULA):

"Do not create, transfer, share, send, submit, post or upload any User Generated Content that: Is protected by copyright, trademark, patent or trade secret or subject to third-party proprietary rights, including rights of privacy and publicity - unless you are or have permission from the rightful owner."

Sounds reasonable enough, but on the basis of complaints thus far it's often unclear what exactly constitutes copyright infringement - Sony has neglected to provide details in many cases, though LBP forum moderators have promised a more robust feedback system. Among the casualties are countless Batman levels and that treasured God of War rip-off we saw during beta.

More on this story as it develops.

amk1111, I see you don't have any imaganation to create your "own" levels without using someone's ideas, or you just trying to be a troll? I think it's a little of both, huh?

Im surprised about God of War getting deleted  b/c that is a Sony Franchise...also...I would think that companies wouldf like to see levels made about their games or movies b/c it's like homage to their creation and its free advertisement.

there is already god of war material within little big planet (i.e. stickers and even a kratos costume) so i dont understand how they could get upset about a god of war level it seems only appropriate and on top of that the god of war level is one of the more creative and original levels out there

psn id: gingo... even with a few deletions the user created content library with still be huge so i dont see this being too much of a problem its just a shame for the people that lose their levels

And how exactly do they know that we don't have permission?!?!

oh for god sakes.  Stop with these stupid boundries already.  The game is downright perfect in every form but if they keep up with these boundries we are going to see less people playing them.  enough of the boundries, some of those boundries they put are not even needed.   Plus the god of war stages would not even go through in the court of law anyway sense the creator is getting paid for it.  Not only that, but there are boundries while going to court that wouldn't justify any of this anyways.   this is stupid.

@JstuFly, that's got to be the most moronic question I've heard in my life.  If you don't have a signed note stating specifically that you have permission then you don't have it, that simple.

    @10

I think what 8 meant is that they deleted the levels without asking first if the user had the permission.

My 8 yr old daughters level was deleted. SHe's definitely not in the know of who/what to create to equal infringement.

I might as well stop creating the level I was making because it obviously will be deleted.  If I had known this was going to happen I wouldn't have bought the game.  I'm not going to spend countless hours to create a level for them to delete it.  Hopefully KZ2 will be good.

Please dont flame me but i dunno much about LBP (ill have to read up on the gameplay a bit). Now "Do not create, transfer, share, send, submit, post or upload". HUH? Do not create? Is this a real time online game or something? How do they know how one would choose to play their own game in their own privacy? You can do almost anything in your privacy but not share it for copyright reasons but this doesnt make any sense to me.

Wow people, let's not go crazy with the over reactions until things get cleared up. First off, there is a difference between using material for your own private use and publishing something for general use by the public.  I think everyone needs to step back and proceed with calmer heads until more of an explanation is forth with.  I have yet to publish a level in LBP but I have been checking out some of the levels that were banned but posted on youtube and there are distinct infringements that contributed to said banning.  People are spending hours creating their own unique levels and end up violating EULA by awarding players with gift items that would clearly violate copyright for example ipod stickers, trademarked logo's etc.

Perhaps more thought should have gone into preparing for this outcome so there wasn't such mass confusion, escpecially the lack of a feedback system for moderation.
