Sony: we must work harder on PS3-PSP marketing

Speaking in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment UK Managing Director Ray Maguire stated his belief that the firm needs to work harder on marketing other PlayStation 3 features such as PSP Remote Play, GPS functionality, and camera functionality.
"Because we've been out for a couple of years now, people are starting to understand and discover the functionality of things like PlayTV, and that's created the desire for people to upgrade to larger hard disk sizes. I just recently put a 320GB drive in mine," said Maguire.
He also stressed that while consumers are starting to acquaint themselves with various services such as Play TV, many people are still unfamiliar with the various connectivity functionalities between the PS3 and PSP.
"I think people are starting to come to grips with that, but what's probably lesser known is the relationship between PS3 and PSP and the Remote Play functionality.
”Those are the things we have to work a little bit harder on - the GPS functionality, the camera functionality - all of those elements which of course give us content to sit on the PS3."

@ 1 no your kinda right on the remote play feature, i understand what you mean i have same problems, and before someone says it will be your wireless signal it isnt. I think SONY need to make retailers more aware of what the PS3 and PSP can do, i was in GAME the other day and a couple were asking questions about the PS3 and the guy didnt have a clue what he was talking about. So i think steps should be made to educate these morons aswel as good advertising.

I use remote play all the time when im downstairs listening to music or in the garden, i agree it is somewhat laggy, even on a local connection, dread to think if i go into town and use our free wifi spots. And yes people in shops need to be educated in these things too, i was in HMV and this guy was asking about blu-ray, the guy who worked their hadnt a clue, but on the other hand our local GAME, the manager there is clued up on all sorts and i often go in and have a chat with him.
Maybe Sony need to put more Ads into the shops that sell their hardware, such as a PS3 and a PSP ad showing the new Resistance 2 games for both consoles, show the new mode that allows you to copy your stats from one to the other (or whatever it is)

They could do a lot of things ... improving remote play is just the start.
Although I have PSP linked locally to my PS3 i have no idea and even less time to start getting it through my firewall and using it from outside. Not that I particularly need to but it would be better if sony addressed their lack of a clear instructions (available from the console) ... not to mention alack of support for WPA2(ccmp).
They seem to be giving us some great titles but they need to take a more Apple based strategy on selling the playstation lifestyle. More TV-ads, better web presence (they seem to have a hundred websites but no portal). It took me ages to find their uk support number and when I did they sent me a ballsed up refurb PS3 that cannot be replaced again for 3 weeks because of stock level issues.
Not only that but my brand new psp also has a dead pixel on it ... and playtv has controls that are different from the rest of the ps experience so they need to loook at all these things with fresh momentum otherwise the great ideas that they've had are going to be lost in the mess that has been built around the brand.
It's all about a concerted marketing effort ... but given by their track record on marketing I don't expect to see anything different coming from them but more confusion

Surely, they need to start advertising the games first. No wonder LBP has only got to number 4 - no casual gamers know about it (in the UK at least).
The only advert I have seen for the PS3 in ages, was for Smackdown. What happened did MS decide to leave this for Sony.
You need to get people buying the PS3 & Games before they can even think about remote play.

@5 Well said ... I guess that's what I was trying to get at when I mentioned PS brand and Sony's overriding marketing faux pas. By their own admission Sony seem to think that the console will sell itself ... seems a bit arrogant really ... more PS3 ads especially for things like LBP, MotorstormPR(this should be a console seller) and Warhawk (which is still the best game out there but not enough people are picking it up nowadays - despite it being the toughest game to complete)

Agree Sony needs to market more about the PS3 and PSP functions. This system is becoming more like a PC and has a ton of functions most work. But please also market the games better. The PS2 had an awesome marketing campaign back when then Sony seems much tamer when they should be more aggressive since the PS3 is more powerful. The economy is getting worse but i don't think it will be for long.

Devs should add bonus content/features in their games for PSP owners.
How about its ability to function as a map or inventory display for games like Resistance 2, ...
How about turning it into a pseudo car radio for a game like GTA IV.
Where's the rear view mirror for F1? Has that ever been released?

aside from being a little laggy the the psp/ps3 remote play connectivity is pretty spot on...I go to work and leave my ps3 in remote play then at work i log onto my ps3 and check my friends, my pictures, my movies and i can also create a new chat and activate my pseye and view my room when i'm away.

Yes finally Sony are realising that they need better marketing plans. I mean honestly, they suck!
