PSU's Top 5 Blu-ray Movies for this Fall

5 September 2007

Now is the time of year where the leaves are turning yellow, people are returning to school and the number of outdoor activities begin to dwindle. So we've decided to providing a list of the top movie titles appearing on Blu-ray this fall for you to kick back and enjoy.

We have selected one film per genre and explained why it were chosen.

So let us begin with our Action pick for the fall...

::Live Free or Die Hard::
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Rated: PG-13
Release: Nov 20, 2007

Movie Summary:

Internet Terrorists hack the U.S. infrastructure, shutting down the entire nation while stealing billions of dollars. Bruce Willis returns in his roll as John McClane, a NYPD cop who gets caught up being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He must not only save his kidnapped daughter but save the U.S. from being held ransom.

Why we chose this film

If you are a fan of the Die Hard series, Live Free or Die Hard (also known as Die Hard 4.0) will not let you down. This movie is packed with plenty of explosions and gun fights to satisfy any hardcore action junky. Also with Justin Long appearing in the film, there is plenty of comical relief and funny dialogue between his character and Bruce Willis's.

The Blu-ray version of this film will be rated PG-13, and Fox has confirmed that no unrated/uncut edition will be released.. All special edition DVD features will be included, plus D-Box motion sensor capabilities, several high-definition trailers and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game Black Hat Intercept.

Moving on we have our Family film pick...

::Ratatouille::
Studio: Disney / Buena Vista
Rated: G
Release: Nov 06, 2007

Movie Summary:

A Pixar/Disney collaboration, Ratatouille is a cute "tail" about a rat who dreams of being the greatest chef in Paris. He teams up with a struggling kitchen boy and by working together they take a failing restaurant and return it to its old glory.

Why we chose this film?

You can never go wrong with a Pixar film; especially in high definition! Ratatouille is another great movie with plenty of laughs and a great moral to the story. Being one of the highest grossing films of the summer, this is a must have for your collection.

The Blu-ray version of this flick will have exclusive features including:

· Gusteau's Gourmet Game
· Cine-Explore
· Exclusive short 'Your Friend the Rat'
· Deleted scenes
· Never-before-seen documentary with Brad Bird

Now for our Comedy pick...

::Monty Python's Life of Brian::
Studio: Sony Pictures
Rated: R
Release: Nov 06, 2007

Movie Summary:

A Monty Python parody of Biblical times where a man named Brian is born in Judea 33 A.D amongst false messiahs and Roman rule. The entire Monty Python cast appears in the film poking fun at everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate, crazy prophets, Roman centurions, and even crucifixion.

Why we chose this film?

It's Monty Python, 'nuff said. Ok but really, if you love British humor and don't mind anti-semitic jokes then this movie will have you laughing and quoting lines forever.

The Blu-ray version will include such features as:
· The Story of Brian - A 60-minute documentary
· The Readthrough - Illustrated 110-minute audio recording of the Pythons reading an early version of the film's screenplay
· Five deleted scenes
· Vintage radio spots

Now onto a Classic...

::Edward Scissorhands::
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Rated: PG-13
Release: Oct 09, 2007

Movie Summary:

A Tim Burton fairytale where an inventor looks to create a masterpiece by making a mechanical man named Edward. Before completing his work of art, the inventor dies, leaving Edward with sharp shears for hands. Living alone, Edward stays in the castle until one day a kind Avon lady discovers him: feeling sorry for him, she invites him to live with her and her family. And so began Edward's fantastical adventures in a pastel paradise known as Suburbia.

Cast includes actors such as: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, and Vincent Price.

Why we chose this film?

In my opinion one of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's best films. With a perfect mix of comedy, fantasy, and romance Edward Scissorhands is a must own for your collection. Simply a cult-classic.

It is unknown what features 20th Century Fox plans to include on the Blu-ray version of this film. Speculation suggests we'll get everything from the 10th Anniversary Edition DVD along with a few new commentaries and perhaps Java-based enhancements.

Horror flick pick...

::28 Days Later::
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Rated: R
Release: Oct 09, 2007

Movie Summary:

A powerful virus is unleashed on the British public following a raid on a primate research facility by animal rights activists. Transmitted in a drop of blood or saliva, the virus infects its host by thrusting them into a permanent state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the UK is overwhelmed leaving London and other major cities in utter ruin. Only a handful of survivors make it out of the city and into the countryside where in a last gasp for hope they look to outlast the hellish horror that has been uncaged.

Why we chose this film?

28 Days Later is perhaps one of the best zombie movies I've seen (outside of Shaun of the Dead) and is ground-breaking in the genre of horror. Instead of slow mindless zombies, you have fast, agile, virus infected humans. This really does give you a more frightening, intense and realistic feel to the storyline. The scenery in this movie is amazing as well. The scenes where Cillian Murphy was walking about a deserted London was fantastically filmed. It gave a vibrant picture of what a real biological virus could do to a city.

In terms of what's planned for the Blu-ray version of the film, it's unknown at this time. All we know if that it will be in 1080p and that's enough for us.
