The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was probably the most-anticipated RPG sequel of all time, and it didn’t disappoint. Traversing the open world of Skyrim on foot or horseback, never knowing what or who you might stumble upon, was incredibly exciting and showcased the vast and highly detailed gameworld. With engaging character development and hundreds of quests that take you from dark dungeons and quaint towns to snowy mountains and battles with giants, Skyrim has depth, variety and personality. Character design was exemplary and the large roster of enemies ensured that players had to adapt their fighting styles, with intense dragon battles providing many highlights. Skyrim is an absolute juggernaut and, despite its PS3-specific technical issues, a clear contender in this tournament.
Before Skyrim came along, Bethesda Softworks set the Western RPG standard with Fallout 3, another sweeping epic with a well-balanced levelling system and an open-ended, post-apocalyptic, retro-future gameworld that was a joy to explore. The innovative V.A.T.S system, which allowed players to pause real-time combat and target specific body parts, was fun and intuitive to use, while the main storyline never failed to engage. With survival horror, RPG, and strategy game elements blending together perfectly, Fallout 3 was crammed full of inventive missions and hundreds of hours worth of gameplay for those willing to brave the terrifying wilderness of the Capital Wasteland.
Which of these two games deserves to move forward in our competition? Cast your votes in the official polling thread, and be sure to vote in all our match-ups to decide the Best PS3 Game Ever!
