Music is a powerful medium. Capable of stirring up long-forgotten memories and evoking powerful emotion in the listener, music can reduce even the burliest of blokes into blubbering, crumpled heaps. And who says that us guys are afraid to show their sensitive side? Poppycock. Of course, video games are no exception to this rule, and as often is the case, a stellar soundtrack can greatly accentuate the on-screen antics, elevating even the most perfunctory scene to hard-hitting greatness.
In a continued celebration of some of gaming’s ear-pleasing aural accomplishments, PSU presents yet another instalment in our on-going Classic Tracks series. This time around, we step into the ring and take a look at one of Tekken Tag Tournament’s greatest anthems.
Name: King’s Theme
Soundtrack: Tekken Tag Tournament
Composer(s): Yu Miyake
Namco’s Tekken series has always delivered the goods when it comes to aural presentation, and Tekken Tag Tournament is no exception. While the soundtrack on the whole is an extremely polished affair, King’s Theme is perhaps one of the better offerings on the album. The track itself is the perfect companion to King’s stage, which takes the form of a sprawling wrestling wring suspended high above the clouds. Featuring a killer bass line, King’s Theme is a euphoric rollercoaster, and evokes a strong feeling of strength, pride and of a general all-around badass – which is perfectly married to the muscle-bound wrestler himself. As with every previous Tekken game up to that point, this tune comes in two flavours: the original arcade version and the PlayStation 2 remix, the latter of which we’ve included below. Enjoy.
