Inside the PlayStation Universe: Dane Smith-Japan Editor (Aug 18th, 2013)

on 18 August 2013

Another week and another tale of life in Japan from PlayStation Universe's Japan Editor, Dane Smith. Always having an opinion about everything he pulls no punches about some certain Capcom news released during the week. Read on and enjoy!

What games have you been playing this week?: I was working on getting the true ending for Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory and also played some Divekick. Check out the review by me later on. It is a weird summer since I have gaming ADHD where I play one game for a little bit and then move on to another game, move on to another and so on and so on. I'd want to awe the readers with something cool in this section but alas it has been a normal, non-crazy week in the world of gaming for me.

Which feature, review or piece of news caught your eye on PSU in the last seven days and why?: US Editor Steven Chaffin gave his opinion on the Resident Evil 7 news that we covered on the site. I have a different take than him and have actually enjoyed the newer trilogy of RE games than the original trilogy. This feels like this will turn into a Star Wars debate. I believed the story of the first three games were superior but the gameplay of the second trio was superior. It has nothing to do with tank controls but just my belief that the older games were built around scares. After getting frightened the first couple times it won't happen again unless it is magically forgotten, so what is left? Run around the enemies and essentially do nothing for three hours in an attempt to speed run the game? That is not my idea of fun, and with the newer trilogy once the scares are gone I can at least have fun going Dirty Harry and 'magnuming' legions of baddies.

On a side note to the news, even if Capcom does go through with bringing RE7 back to its roots the goose is cooked in the west. Too many people and websites keep asking Capcom to make Resident Evil a certain way, from having an American company make the game (Operation Raccoon City) because supposedly the Japanese can't make a good game anymore as stated by legions of trolls in the past, to the OMG RE4 is so revolutionary hypocrisy that spouts RE5 and 6 suck but magically have the same gameplay that RE4 has, and is better than RE4's. I don't care how Capcom makes the game. I loved Operation Raccoon City so put Resident Evil on it and I'll buy it. Okay, I'm kinda a hypocrite. A Resident Evil RPG or strategy game I would love to see and would buy instantly. I already own all six of the cards games.

What are you doing when you’re not a PSU editor?: Well, this week I got on a six hour bus from Nagoya to Tokyo and played tourist on the weekend. Among my favourite parts of the trip was going to a restaurant that inspired the restaurant fight scene in Kill Bill volume 1 and also go see Tokyo Tower at night, with fireworks!!!

Dane Smith is the Japan editor for PlayStation Universe. When not out on the streets of Nagoya wondering why no one is looking for a Yakuza-style showdown, he can be found cracking open the newest RPG to hit the shelves. You can follow him on Twitter or read some of his past musings.
