Top 5 PSU reader-voted PlayStation games of 2014

PSU readers have been voting over the past week for their favourite PS4, PS3 and PS Vita games of 2014. The votes have now been counted and we can reveal the top five most popular games on PlayStation platforms this year.

5. South Park: Stick Of Truth – 8%
It goes to show that PlayStation gamers have a sense of humour. With so many action-packed shooters and sprawling adventures in 2014, it’s great to see Obsidian Entertainment’s side-splitting RPG make the cut.

It wasn’t just about the cast of familiar characters though; underneath its close-to-the-bone jibes at Jews, anal-probing incidents, and fart-powered combat lies an in-depth and satisfying role-playing experience the likes of which you will never have played before.

Reader quote: "Best TV/Game adaption since Simpsons : Hit and Run. If you haven’t played it and like either South Park or even just RPGs then you are seriously missing out" – BitbyDeath

4. GTA V – 10%
The impressive PS4 debut of GTA V may have been among a host of remasters in 2014, but Rockstar’s masterpiece beat off the likes of The Last Of US Remastered to gain a spot in the top five list. The first-person camera mode does more than change the flow and feeling of play. In Grand Theft Auto V on PS4, every movement and action carries more excitement and meaning. Alongside visual upgrades and content additions, this version of Rockstar’s masterpiece is can’t-miss gaming.

3. Dragon Age Inquisition – 10%
BioWare’s four years spent developing Dragon Age: Inquisition have paid off, as it’s easily the company’s greatest achievement. The expertly crafted story and the massive world meant for your exploration are just the tip of the iceberg. Dragon Age: Inquisition is not only one of the best games to come out this year–it’s easily the best RPG of the year.

Reader quote: "They absolutely nailed it with taking the best of Origins and 2. Not to mention the game probably has the biggest exploitable map ever going by how much I have explored." – PS4freak

2. Destiny – 14%
Bungie is a master at creating shooters and Destiny has the FPS gameplay completely nailed with solid game mechanics and an addictive multiplayer arena. Destiny is a game that gets better the more you play it, and despite some of the criticisms it faced at launch and beyond, has proven that those who have stuck around are among the most hardened and passionate shooter fans ever to have graced the arena.

Reader quote: "The scope and ambition Bungie has for this franchise and the experience I’ve had playing the storyline, raids, strikes, and PvP have done more than enough for me to name Destiny as my GotY."- Burgiccuda

1. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – 29%
Widely talked about as the best Lord of The Rings game ever to have been created, Monolith Productions has created an enthralling universe with a fantastic-looking open-world, hard-hitting combat and an innovative new Nemesis system which adds an infinite number of personal stories to a game already teaming with choice.

What the developer has done here is take everything that’s good about sandbox games and throw in a unique feature that makes it stand out amongst its rivals.

Reader quote: "What Monolith made from those raw ingredients is bloody phenomenal." – Neil S Bolt.
