Since blu-ray and HD-DVD movies have been cracked and ripped. Many of the torrent sites are now putting up these movies in 720p hd to download. And with some of the codecs out, you'll be able to play these in full 720p HD. But the movies are around lik 2 gbs

BluRay and HD-DVD is not the next gen, its the mid-gen :P All HD media will be streamed. Maybe not next year, but who knows the future?

It's been said countless times before, but I'll say it once more:

It's going to be YEARS before downloaded media, be it games or movies, completely replaces hard copy such as discs. The infrastructure simply isn't there, and it's not something you can easily swap out. Not just the move to fiber optics, but people will need the proper storage to make it practical, along with a decent download speed. Hell, some sites don't even have the right upload capacity for it. With a lot of people still using dial-up, I don't see it happening for a while. A long while.

Yeah agree with you both, but thats the way we are going, not neccessary 50 years ahead.

Edit: And yes I uses VCR too :D

well if they ever get this 100mb to 200mb net connections out with a download rate close to those numbers, then we could be downloading high def movies in 1 min. but torrent downloading needs to speed up greatly.

In the nordic countries in Europe, the internet speeds are through the roof (the average speed is over 25Mb/s and goes up to and well over 100Mb/s) so the rest of us shouldn't be too far behind...I hope :/

I don't understand the OP's post but sure, rips from HD sources are readily available. Heck, I could do it myself if I wanted to if the disc images didn't take up so much hard drive space.

The CEO of Comcast hinted at 100Mbit speeds sometime in 2008 so we'll see if anything comes out of that. Places like Asia and Europe have high population densities so it is easier to implement new technologies, like fiber networks in the whole country. The US on the other hand is spread out, so it costs more for the telecom companies to roll out the new stuff. They would rather try to push the limits of existing things, cable internet for instance.

If that's the case then everything will always be mid-gen since there is always something bigger and better right around the corner...

Havent you noticed it? You buy a new thing , and next year there is MUCH improvements of that same thing. :snicker So everything we buy is old, and out of date. Look at the first PS2 versus the latest...

200mbps... 100mbps.... or 20mbs!

firstly we can already get HD signals over cable, we can already download over cable etc... secondly 20mbs is perfectly reasonable for HD, just set to download before you want to watch the movie, heck for many of us the time it take to go to the shop/video store is the same, even better you can start to watch before the downlaod is complete.

In addition peer to peer.

regarding enough storage space, a 20gig 360 is acceptable,.

Download is here for anyone who cares to do it and has been for 2 years.

I saw a torrent for Ghost in the Shell: Innocence on Mininova and it was the full 33 gigs uncompressed! Needless to say, I actually downloaded it.
