Sony's laid out its plans for 2008 and from the looks and sounds of it, they're planning to up the ante of the PlayStation Network to rival such services as Apple's iTunes and Microsoft's XBox Live service -- all for free. Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, said the PS3 is planned to connect to a multitude of devices, including mobile phones and other "unspecified" electronics.

The mobile phone deal is part of a three year plan, coupled with the persistent rumors of a PSPhone, making the date of April 1, 2008 a little something to look forward to. Stringer outlined Sony's next fiscal year a little like this: "PlayStation Network next year puts us in the direct line of fire with Apple and Microsoft," referring of course to iTunes and Live. He didn't say what was planned exactly, but draw your own conclusions from his quote about a dinner he had: "we had a dinner where the heads of Sony Electronics, [Sony] Pictures, Sony BMG, and Sony PlayStation were all at the same dinner table intermingled and actually communicating." Who knows. It could be any number of exciting things, what with all the different areas Sony covers in the electronics world.

Sony planning PS3-electronics connectivity, PSN expansion

CEO Sir Howard Stringer says console will soon have online connectivity to range of products, including mobile phones; PSN being primed to take on Xbox Live, iTunes.

By Tor Thorsen (http://www.gamespot.com/users/thorsen-ink/), GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) Posted Dec 11, 2007 3:24 pm PT

At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6149470.html), Sony first took the wraps off Remote Play, a function that would allow PlayStation 3 owners to wirelessly stream music, videos, and games from their consoles onto a PlayStation Portable. A local version of the functionality was introduced in March as part of the PS3's v1.6 firmware update and was further enhanced to allow access via the Internet as part of November 1.8 firmware update.
Today, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer told an audience in Tokyo that Remote Play is only the beginning of the PS3's external connectivity. The Bloomberg news service reports that the Welsh executive--the first Western-born CEO in Sony's history--said his company plans to eventually link up the PS3 to mobile phones and a range of other unspecified electronics. The specific mention of phones resurrected longstanding rumors that Sony is readying a PlayStation-branded phone much like its Bravia TV-branded Sony Ericsson mobile (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/19/sony-ericssons-so903itv-bravia-mobile-gets-real/).
The drive for mobile phone-to-PS3 connectivity will be part of Sony's next three-year business plan, which starts on April 1, 2008. That date also marks the start of Sony's next fiscal year, which Stringer predicts will see a massive expansion of the PS3's online service, the PlayStation Network.
"PlayStation Network next year puts us in the direct line of fire with Apple and Microsoft," Stringer told the Reuters news service, obliquely referencing iTunes and Xbox Live. He also dropped hints, which reinforced previous Sony statements, that the year would see many assets in the company's massive content portfolio appear on PSN. "On Friday, we had a dinner where the heads of Sony Electronics, [Sony] Pictures, Sony BMG, and Sony PlayStation were all at the same dinner table intermingled and actually communicating," he said.

downloadable videos and music via PSN to the PSP/PS3 and possibly the PS Phone. Awesome. If they can get all those devices to interact, like the PSP/PS3 do now, then even greater. This is great vision for the company and for us consumers on the whole.

I hope they still make everything to where it can still work with iTunes and other Apple products. I'm a big Apple supporter and I use many of their products/devices. It would be a shame if, in the spirit of competition, they make their stuff work with only Sony products and services (ex. only with Sony phones or even any phone other than the iPhone). I would have thought Sony and Apple would work together since they have a common enemy and with Apple being on the Blu-Ray Disc Association board, but maybe not.

Its bad enough we're sweating out a movie format war, now we might have to see a digital format war as well.

Great! Another mutually-exclusive way I could buy music that can't be played on any device other than one made by the company I bought it from! :p

I could have an awesome music collection split across three or four players.

Since it's Sony, it will likely be a file format that will ONLY be usable by other Sony devices.

Making it absolutely worthless in the end.

Sony did away with ATRAC. Its probably going to mostly be for movies anyways. Mpeg4, which is usuable on pretty much everything. They'll probably use MP3 or AAC for music. Will your PS3 be able to sync up with anything other than a Sony MP3 player? Who knows. It'll be able to transfer these files onto any FAT32 drive regardless. If Sony blocks that then that's ****ed up.

edit: Wait a second... is this like iTunes and WMP? On the PC and everything? Hmm. Really ambiguous info.

Haha. The picture of Tom Hanks looks funny. At first I though someone photo-shopped his head on someone else's body. Just thought I would say that.

Anyways, I don't know if this is such a great idea. We all know how well Zune worked out against the Ipod.

yeah ...but we are talking about the PS3...being the media hub...most likley they will come up with a device that can be used on the ps3...and downloaded to your PC...similar to what we do with TVersity but in the respect of something much better...if you really think about it...if you have a PSP..you are sort of using this function...or feature...but the question is...what will they come up that will compete...downloading music...videos...podcast...listen to the radio...imagine the possibilities...

Sounds like the network we have all been waiting for and those other guys can only dream about. I keep harping on the potential of this console and the more these reports come out the more I see it all coming to fruition.

sounds good, but it'd be great if they brought the network to PCs online (they have plans to do that already, am I wrong?) it'll be interesting, if not for everyone, then at least for those who have a ps3.
