I'll talk a bit later after I'm out of my state of shock.

I hope to pick up SMG.

You've done well picking one up from Amazon, I saw them in stock earlier today and by the time I phoned my friend about it they had all gone.

It's my first Nintendo console too (bought it on launch day last year), it's a great console, if you want to just pick up and play something.

Elder brother home from the navy until January, brought his Xbox 360 with him. Have access to Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3 and Guitar 3 offline. His friend just lent us a Wii for a week or so.. quite a few games, only 1 wiimote though, but most importantly Super Mario Galaxy. <3 Gah, my gawd the game is amazing. If we had a second wiimote I would love to play co-op, just so I could do the slightly hectic act of collecting starbits while my brother or friends handled all the rest. The best thing is that it would work very well as the star bit system really slows down the gameplay, or at least interferes with it to a very noticeable degree early on. It's incredibly fun to simply watch, and it's gorgeous on our ancient TV :D

Eh.. I think you might need a Wii-mote + nunchuck for a full second character, but with just a second Wii-mote the only thing the second player can do is freeze enemies and projectiles from bosses. Also collect stars.

There's no full second character mode that I know of; only the co-op mode with stars.

Which is fine, because that's an awesome mode.

PS3>>Wii.

If you're a gamer you pick the PS3 or 360. Right now there's too much shovel ware and very few decent games other than Ninty's main mascots. The interface of the main menu is actually nice and simple, designed with the non-gamers in mind, while I'm also impressed with the Nintendo's website, makes Sony's PS website look outdated and crap. The stars system is cool, you register new Nintendo products to get stars and you can either use it to claim free gifts like Mario toys, etc or use it to claim Wii points for VC (I got Super Mario Bro's 3 for the NES).

Interesting thing is, if you try to play N64 games, you need a classic or GC controller. You also need a GC controller if you try to play GC disc games.

Why'd you wait so long to get it, you don't seem financially challenged?

Well, congrats anyway, lol.

I've been waiting for a major game to impress me (SMG & Z&W) to try it out, since my family was also interested in the console with the whole party aspect.

yes you did.:)

These are the games that really shows what Wii is about.

Wii play is the first choice because of the extra controller.:p While Z&W seems very fun and has that old PC adventure point and click play.

Wii sports is funny since some of the character don't have legs and float. Casual people I know seem to love and call it Why sports.

Interesting notions.

And yeah, you really do need gamecube controllers and memory cards for gamecube games. No skin off my nose -- I have them already -- but I sorta wish they'd added a thing where you could import a card and then just use the internal memory.

The wii sounds great, i dont why, but its just appealing to me, though i dont know the games that are out on it, i do know however is that it lacks games, hope that ends sometime next year.

What really GREAT games are out for the wii?. i enjoy games like FPS's and stuff more than i do Mario "though i havent played one since Mario 2D!", Resident evil umbrella chornicles looks awesome, and Manhunt 2!.

The wii looks great, i just wish Nintendo would have spent more time improving the Hardware. I mean imagine next gen graphics on the wii...i dont see why they chose to basically just add the wiimote.

Enjoy it, man. You sound like you're quite content with it, but having a Wii will get better. Admittedly, it doesn't have as much selection as other consoles, but by the end of its' life, the Wii will have HUNDREDS of worthwhile titles. Hang onto it! Never sell it! My friend made that mistake and is regretting it.

Well, they didn't. They noticably upgraded the other hardware -- it's substantially faster, it's got a lot more memory, and so on.

But mostly? They spent their technological advance budget on reducing power consumption and cost, and that's why the Wii is profitable at $250 instead of losing money hand over fist at $400.

Please, stop using that phrase. It's a personal thing, but I absolutely can't stand repetition, and I've seen you use it many times in reference to Sony and MS's losses. I might have to stop reading your posts to stop getting that spinal shiver feel.

Also, as a gamer, I actually don't care about how much money they make. So far, the other consoles have the better games and the better graphics, and the better sound and the better resolution and the better multiplayer and the better online services etc etc.

While I'm not saying the Wii is bad, it's worth it at this level at such a low price point, but company profits hardly affect me at all. Did you hear? Even the Dreamcast got two new games recently.

Okay, I'll try to remember to switch phrases. :)

Also, as a gamer, I actually don't care about how much money they make.

In the short term, I don't care. In the long term, I do, because that's what determines the future options.

I'll grant better graphics and sound; better resolution was already covered under better graphics. Better online services, I wouldn't know about; never tried any of them. Same for multiplayer.

But better games? I don't think so. Show me anything for PS3 or 360 that's as fun as SMG. I haven't seen anything that even came close. For that matter, I haven't seen anything for either that's as cool as Zack&Wiki.

I knew some guys who released a 3DO game about 2 years after it died.

I think company profits have a big impact on the kinds of games we get, and how many we get. I care a lot about them indirectly, and that's why I will go out of my way to support companies that make interesting games, even if the games end up not being that much fun for me personally.

I think Wii does have the weakest library right now. I can only think of two exclusive games that I'm interested in, and it has the problem of being unable to handle ports from some great PS3/PC/360 games.

That's a matter of opinion. There are lots of people who prefer a competitive FPS over any kind of platforming. Is Zack & Wiki really cool? I think Nathan Drake is much cooler than they are, personally...

See what I mean? SMG is obviously a great game, maybe the best of the year. It's certainly debatable though, and one great game doesn't make up for the lack of good to decent titles on the system.

The thing that puts me off most about the Wii is this:

What comes after Brawl? Is there anything at all worth looking forward to right now? I could argue that SMG, TP, and Brawl are worth the cost of the system, but I'd have a hard time buying it with so little on the horizon.

The way I see it, the PS3 and 360 can't handle Wii ports, so it's sort of a fair tradeoff. I've already got a PC and a PS3, but the Wii's the one that gets the most love (outside of World of Warcraft).

That's a matter of opinion. There are lots of people who prefer a competitive FPS over any kind of platforming.

Yup. And those people should get a 360, because nothing will touch it for sheer supply of competitive FPS games.

I'd rather play an incredibly well-scripted adventure game than tomb raider without boobs.

It's a better game.

See what I mean? SMG is obviously a great game, maybe the best of the year. It's certainly debatable though, and one great game doesn't make up for the lack of good to decent titles on the system.

But there's more than just one. There's enough that no one with a job could reasonably hope to play through them all.

Tons of stuff, most of it not announced yet. Monster Hunter 3, the recently-announced Namco RPG, and... Who knows? People have not announced or released everything. I'll probably get No More Heroes. I'll get Endless Ocean, although that may not appeal to the FPS crowd. Mario Kart is pretty much always fun, even if it's nothing special. There's a Square kingdom sim of some sort coming out for Wii Ware, there's a new Dragon Quest series game, and there's probably a lot of other things -- who knows? I'm okay with a system where I don't mostly hear about games a year in advance, and then watch them get delayed another full year or more while I'm waiting for them. :)

If nothing else, Kojima's said that he wants very much to work on something for Wii as soon as he finishes MGS4. I'm going to be watching that one with interest.

Oh, and Spore.

Yeah, but you don't know if anything is really in the pipes. The Namco RPG looks...like a new RPG. Who's to say it won't be utter crap? Monster Hunter 3 should be good, I didn't know about that one. Mario Kart will surely be Mario Kart, another promising title...although I've heard nothing about it. A Dragon Quest series game? Do you mean the likes of Dirge of Cerberus or Final Fantasy X-2 as Final Fantasy series games? If it's an actual Dragon Quest game, you're starting to enlighten me here.

On the Wii, or in general?

Yeah, but you don't know if anything is really in the pipes.

Of course we do! There are places that have added ten or fifteen development teams to do new games. Some of those games will be good. Some won't.

The Namco RPG looks...like a new RPG. Who's to say it won't be utter crap?

Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Symphonia, ... You get the idea. Namco's good at that.

Monster Hunter 3 should be good, I didn't know about that one.

Yup. It got some brief media coverage, but they're not hyping it much. Sony's got people prepped for a year or longer to think a title is Guaranteed To Be AAA; Nintendo's waiting until games are ready before trying to call attention to them. That makes Sony's lineup look bigger, but look how it turned out in practice...

Mario Kart will surely be Mario Kart, another promising title...although I've heard nothing about it.

Who needs to? We know they'll make one, we know it'll be fun.

A Dragon Quest series game? Do you mean the likes of Dirge of Cerberus or Final Fantasy X-2 as Final Fantasy series games? If it's an actual Dragon Quest game, you're starting to enlighten me here.

I think closer to something like Crystal Chronicles -- a decent game, but not the mainline series -- which moved to DS.

Spore's not exactly in the traditional PC/360/PS3 genres. :)

Uncharted got 89%
Zack & Wiki got 87%.

It's not the better game, though it is a good one.

Stateofminds' point was that you can't pass off Uncharted as some mediocre Tomb Raider ripoff. It is an exceptional game, more so than Z&W, apparently (though not by much).
At 2% difference it's down to personal preference, but either way, Uncharted is every bit that incredibly well-scripted adventure game that you were talking about, seebs.

2% is within statistical error.

Perhaps more importantly, Z&W is a kind of game that is far from what many reviewers are comfortable with -- but Uncharted is sort of a formula game.

I wouldn't call it an adventure game at all. I understood it was in the same genre as Tomb Raider.

I guess, when I think "adventure", I think things like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, or King's Quest... Or Z&W. Action elements in such games are usually rare or secondary, or even skippable.

Fair enough. But for me -- a puzzle game fanatic who plays Infocom games and has written text adventures for competitions -- Z&W is the interesting game, and Uncharted looks like pretty much a close relative of Tomb Raider, which I never got that into.

Jabjabs
12-26-2007, 04:51
Yeah I would count Uncharted more as an adventure game than a platform game and any way it puts Tomb Raider to shame with how fresh they have made the formula. True it's not the same as the point & click adventures but it's still got the same essence and vibe going for it. Different perspectives on the same idea I suppose.

The real question it, why are we comparing Z&W with Uncharted? They don't exactly seam like competition at all, they may be in terms of genre style but out side of that they are different in almost every way.
