Hello, I need some help getting Ubuntu to run on my PC so if theres any Linux genii out there please help.

I've installed Linux from a disc no problem, but when ever I boot it up I get a message saying "Cannot Display This Video Mode".
If anyone can help it would be great. I'm completely new to Linux so I have no idea what I'm doing.

What setup are you running? Can you boot into Grub (if you are dual booting) or what? If so, I THINK there is an option to force VESA driver.....if so, use that. If not, re-install using the LIVECD, but when you are at the LIVECD screen, choose your resolution.

You are using Gutsy correct?

I am not trolling or anything but I am going to say "idiots" for the above 2 posts. DId you really add anything to the conversation except your ignorance for a perfectly good piece of software.

To the op, would you still like to have your problem resolved? Otherwise ask a mod to close the thread.

I'm using my Dell Dimension 5000, quite an old model.

Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
1 gig ram

Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
128 Mb

Monitor: DELL E153FPT

I can boot into grub no problem, then when I select Ubuntu, after the loading screen comes up a blank screen with "Cannot Display This Video Mode" comes up.

The version is Ubuntu 7.04. I downloaded it and burnt it to disk a while ago and have only got round to trying to install it recently.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate the help. I've been wanting to try Linux/Ubuntu for a long time now.

When I had this problem with feisty, I guessed that it should be displaying the login screen when it was showing this error- so I typed in my username, pressed enter, password, enter, and it logged me in- running in a working display mode! :)

EDIT: This was with a Dell, running 7.04 too so I guess it's the same problem!

I would download Gusty and use that if you don't care about loosing anything. Gusty is FAR better than Fiesty because they fixed a bunch of issues, and display was one of them.

I shall give that a go when I have finished downloading Zombie Panic: Source. Thanks

Oh, and you can press CTRL ALT F4 and go to a terminal and correct it from there if you need to.

Yeah, Feist 7.04 is kiind of flaky. I would suggest for you to get 7.10 first. Its is a huge improvement over 7.04. If that does not fix the issue, it probably has to do with a file calle xorg.conf, we can talk about that later.

Yay, got it working with 7.10. Now I've got to figure out how to do all the cool stuff on it. Thanks for any input and help guys.

Windows Xp is a very good piece of software. However alot of the Linux users think otherwise.

Fact is the Windows platform has got its bad name from too many retards using it. They f*** about and screw their pc's up then go and complain to Microsoft.

Linux a rather new and challenging OS, only really attracked computer smart people, they know how to use OS and they know how to fix problems.

Since the Linux user base was mainly composed of intelligent people, very small complaints where made leading to a 'Linux is perfect' mentality amoung the computing world.

Now however you'll see a tide of retards realising there is this so called 'wonder os' and they will start to flood to it. Leading to what we have here ... problems arsiing. As the retards start deleteing important files, corrupting drivers and doing whatever they an to **** it up, so will the problems and infamy of Linux. However unfortunately Linux doesn't have that 'we'll design it for retards' policy like Microsoft. So when the retards start to flood in, expect more problems and complaints and expect LInux's reputation to be tarnished greatally.

"Rather new"? Linux dates back to the first version of Windows I BELIEVE (It is very old anyways). It is NOTHING new.
Linux will NEVER be as big as Windows no matter how many people like myself and other users would like it to be. When computer illetarate people want to become more sophisticated, they MIGHT start to use Linux. But the driver support is low and so is program compatibility.

Linux =/= Windows IMO.

Urm don't know why you quoted me, you didn't discuss anything I said.

My point is atm Linux has a reputation of been more reliable and better, windows has a reputation of been ****ty. My point is that its not really the OS's themselves, but more the users.
