So after i got my PS3 i decided it was time to hook back up my wireless, linksys wrt54g, my desktop is wired to it, and laptop and ps3 are wireless and hooked up to the tv. Ever since i did my wireless, my desktop is way slower and loses connection, and my laptop that is like 15 ft away gets like a 5.5 connection and my ps3 loses the host or hgets disconnected from the network a lot, anyone know why or how to solve this, i updated drivers for the linksys and tried it with packet bursting on and off, same result. Not that big of a deal, just kinda annoys me.
Suggestions???

Back before I got FIOS, I used to have a WRT54G Linksys router.

My PS3 would randomly disconnect for no reason all the time, and my other devices were unstable as well. No amount of Linksys firmware would ever fix the problem. The issue COMPLETELY went away after I updated my router with third-party, linux based firmware.

The one I used was DD-WRT. Go to google, and search on it and you will get all sorts of pages that tell you about it and how to update your Linksys Router to this firmware.

I can't stress enough that if you choose to do it, make sure you follow the directions EXACTLY. If you screw up, you can brick your router. It's not terribly difficult at all, you just need to be careful.

The first step to ps3 internet problems. Disable media server on the ps3, then try again.

Do i need to have linux or will it work with crappy windows?

EDIT: how do i disable media servers, i just got the PS3 and im still tryin to learn all the fun stuff with it.

DD-WRT is linux based, but it's only the firmware (ie..software that controls the router) for the router that is in Linux. The actual functionality of the Internet connection will not stop working in Windows. I was using XP on my desktop (that also went to that router) after I updated mine.

Media Server is over in the 'Network' area I believe....someone who knows for sure will chime in and tell you. I'm not near my PS3 right now.

A wired network will never beat wireless.. not until the technology gets stronger.

If you have the WRT54G model 5 and up, then that could be why your wireless connection sucks. That model and up, Linksys have decided to move away from the Linux based OS inside the router and used something else instead. The result? Numerous problems.

It's in the Network settings in the Settings option... 2nd icon on the left on the main XMB screen. Once you get to the Network Settings (I think it's near the bottom of the list) you'll find the Media Server option, which is also at the bottom of the list.

I've you've never enabled it I don't think it will be enabled though. Not completely sure on that.

Not really sure what the problem is. You could try Wired i suppose. However, it could get messy. Also, perhaps try a different Router/Modem, Linksys have been having quite a lot of problems with their earlier models lately.

Goodluck :-)

I used to have that same router and was having the same problem,I switched to a D-Link router and have been proper ever since. If you can afford to switch routers,do it,it might not fix all your problems but there will be less of them

Linksys is a very good brand I have it. the model is WRT54G like you do I dont have any problems at all. I switch it from the other PC in another room to the PC in my room with no problems. I dont get a connection drop or a slow connection unless im downloading something and trying to play online.

I got slow wireless when the PS3 uses the automatic settings and when I put everything in the PS3 manually, I can't connect at all.
I'm running through the house(and it's quite big) for three days now.
The router is upstairs and the PS3 downstairs at the other side of the house.
I'm considering to bring it back to the store and buy a pack of cards.
At least i have some money left over to gamble.:DD

To be honest I only bought the PS3 for online gaming.( aswell for the 360)
Hopefully I can fix it today.

If you cant wire the system, get a wireless extender, basically a larger and stronger antenna .

Is this a brand new PS 3 fresh out of the box?

I had the same problem with the same router (Linksys WRT54G) and a brand new PS 3 – 80G purchased 12/07. The problem was two fold, the router needed a firmware update, it sounds like you might have already done that, and the PS 3 system software needed to be updated to at least 1.8 … fresh out of the box the PS 3 ships with an old system that connects to the WRT54G at VERY slow speeds (it took me over 12 hours to download the PS 3 system update and I couldn’t bring up speedtest.net at all).

Once the updates are complete reboot both the router and PS 3, this is important to force the two units to negotiate faster connection settings (if you don’t reboot the router after the PS 3 update the router will retain slow connection settings for the PS 3 even though a faster connection is possible)

After updates and reboots speedtest.net reports approximately the same speeds for my wireless PS 3, my wired desktop, and various laptops scattered throughout the house. Downloads of large game demos (like Uncharted or Resistance) only take a few minutes. BTW: I have not disabled media servers and it works fine after the updates.

Just a tip: If I had to do it over again I’d run a temporary wire down the hall from the router to the PS 3, 12 hours on an unstable connection is a long time to wait for the system update.

If the problem persists I read about a solution where an adaptor was used to convert the PS 3’s wired port to wireless … seems like a waste to me since the PS 3 has built-in wireless but it solved that person's problem. I read another solution where someone hacked packet settings on the router which improved the PS 3 performance but slowed down everything else … IMHO if everything is up to date, freshly rebooted, and if the signal strength is good it should work.

A quick word about signal strength: I’ve seen a lot of posters blame signal strength for connection issues even when the unit in question is reporting good strength or better. IMHO that’s a bit of a crutch and probably not the issue, however, my girlfriend was using a WRT54G in an apartment complex and we had a great deal of difficulty connecting laptops sitting right next to the router. It turns out that the WRT54G router is a 2.4Ghz transmitter that shares the same channels as 2.4Ghz cordless phones, it’s very easy for a cordless phone user to create havoc with a nearby wireless networks. If this is the case you’ll have problems with all of your wireless equipment, not just the PS 3. The fix is simple, just configure the router to use a different channel.
