Just three quick questions for anyone who would be knowledgable enough to awnser these!

1-I've heard on these boards that most developpers for the next-gen will stick to the 30 frame rate instead of 60.
Why is it hard to pull off 60 ?

2-I play mostly sports game on my console and noticed that the ESPN titles ( who had 60 frame rate ) vs EA's (30 Frame rate ) where more precise and where smoother gameplay wise. Does this has anything to do with frame rate ?

3-Could Mircosoft (or Sony) create a tool that would help developpers reach the 60 frame rate ?

1) Very expensive to do so. You have to use more ram as a frame buffer.

The only reason they create 60 "Frames" per second is to fill the 60 "Fields" per second that a NTSC TV needs. They create full frames and only 50% of the data actually goes out to the TV. For PAL, it is 50 Fields per second.

2) 60fps is important for most old TV's. It will give the perception of a smoother flow.

3) They already have tools that will help them identify the bottlenecks that are preventing them from reaching 60fps if they want to.

Why aren't developers really considering 60fps for next generation? Most TV's bought in the last 4 years support progressive scan mode. This means that the content is no longer sent in roughly 60 Fields per second (actually 59.94) but instead are sent in 30 complete frames per second.

It is now more important to lock your framerate at 30. Doing so should provide the smoothest play experience you can present.

Siren, you made a bit of a mistake progressive runs at 60fps.

Interlaced: 60fps, but needs two images to draw each scene, thus effectively 30fps

Progressive: 60fps,but needs a single image to draw each scene, thus effectively 60fps.

With X2 the best it can do is 1080i (i standing for interlaced) thus there's NO reason to go to 60fps, since you won't even see it. Think of it as having DVI on your GPU adding a Digital-to-analog adapter to it and then connecting to a CRT... what's the point? None, that's why no one plans to go to 60fps

Lots a info here:

To make it easier, maybe it's better if the editors were made mods. When an article is written, the thread title can be something like [READY] <title> and after it's put up, the [READY] bit can be removed by whoever makes it live.

We could also use stuff like [IP] for in progress or something like that.

I like the idea.

Sounds good to me.

This is a great idea! Cera, Bhav, Perfect Sin & Brandon have been put into the "Editors" group and can change titles etc.

The format we should use is:

[WIP] = Work in progress
[READY] = Waiting for an editor to make live
[LIVE] = Once an article is live on the site

We should never close topics, as discussion even after an article goes live is important.

The above status tags should go at the beginning of the thread title.

Rebon, it says you're the only one in the Editor group... :?
