The more and more I hear of this Aqualiani the more I am not too worried about Xabi leaving. Especially if we were to pick up Silva as well.
It looked as though Reira was playing slightly more center in Spains Confed cup recently and he looked pretty sharp.

Get rid of Alonso , the ****** , bring in someone who wants to play for us.
Wouldnt mind Aqulaini (sp) , i remember hearing what a talent he was , wouldnt mind someone like Veloso too.
Roma have stated Aquilani isn't for sale and he's just signed a new contract.
Sounds like they could be persuaded.
Roma claim that Liverpool want to snap up midfielder Alberto Aquilani as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.
Anfield manager Rafa Benitez is resigned to losing Alonso, as the Spanish playmaker has set his heart on a move back home to Real Madrid.
Real boss Manuel Pellegrini has restated his interest in Alonso – and sources close to Roma say Aquilani figures on Benitez’s hitlist of targets should the Spanish club finally meet the Kop chief’s £35million asking price.
But Italy star Aquilani, who is recovering from ankle surgery, would not come cheap.
Cash-strapped Roma are expected to demand more than £18m after tying down the 25-year-old with a four-year contract just two months ago.
Alonso has been left in limbo by Real’s refusal to agree to Benitez’s price tag – and Pellegrini claims he does not know what will happen next.
"All we know is that Alonso is a very good player," he said.
"We don’t know what is happening with him. He is now a player with Liverpool, so we will see what will happen in the future. I cannot speak about players who are not at Real Madrid now."
Liverpool have signed Borussia Dortmund’s Stephen Sama on a two-year deal.
The Reds moved to land Sama before the German club could secure the 16-year-old on a professional deal. The highly-rated defender is a regular in Germany’s Under-17 side.

Ugh , wtf , why are we still signing 16 year olds when some of our best players are threatening to leave ?
Rafa baffles me at times.
Hmm... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Aquilani Look at his apps for the last 3 years. We carry a 60+ game season, can we afford someone that could be injured all the time?

Both Torres and Alonso have had lengthy lay offs the past seasons.

You know what, that wouldn't at all surprise me. And if we end up losing either or of Alonso and Masch, we're stuffed.
This would be the epitome of stupidity if there was any semblance of truth behind it.
Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, is set to battle it out with Aston Villa for the signing of Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth
Yes, let's sign a 31 yr old defender.
Wheres that from? Surely a defender is the last thing we need, Carra never gets injured and we have Agger that lost a tooth on the pitch and played on and Skittles the terminator.

Some more news.
Roma ace Alberto Aquilani has been told by the Italian club to prepare for life in the Premier League with Liverpool, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.
The report suggests the Reds are expected to make a move for the Italian midfielder if Xabi Alonso joins Real Madrid. In light of those developments, the Giallorossi are ready to cash in on Aquilani in order to balance their books, and they have told him to prepare for a move.
Club directors have never completely ruled out the possibility of selling their man and the feeling at Trigoria is that the Rome-born midfielder will be sold for the right money. Any move is now hinging on Alonso and Real Madrid.
Reds coach Rafael Benitez has already claimed that Alonso will remain with the English team and it is suggested Real have slowed down their chase for the Spaniard. On Monday, Aquilani's agent, Franco Zavaglia, said there was nothing concrete in the recent press reports.
The player is currently recovering from ankle surgery and he is expected to return to action in August

From all reports, it does look like Alonso is almost gone. I dont see you selling mash as well though. Barca have 2 DM's already.
If you BOTH did leave though, then you will no hope of winnning our title this season.
Rafa keeps saying hes happy with the squad, REALLY? just a RB?! I dont think so. When Alonso goes, im sure hes gotta replacement. I fully expected you to have signed Silva already, but hes not a replacement for Alonso AT ALL.
(and before i get a snarky comment, NO im not happy with Owen, Valencia and Obertan!)
I hope like hell Rafa hasn't settled on his current dealings.
To be honest, I am getting sick of this. Someone come out and definitively say "Yes he is going" or "No we wont sell him this summer"
Liverpool have denied that they are close to agreeing a deal to sell Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid amid rumours that he missed the club's game against Thailand on Wednesday evening.
The Reds are locked in a struggle to keep hold of the midfield playmaker with manager Rafa Benitez insisting that the player can only leave if the Merseyside club's demands are met.
Alonso picked up an ankle injury before Liverpool's 1-1 draw in Bangkok and that led to rumours that Real Madrid had raised their bid a nd a transfer was imminent.
Instead, Liverpool have reiterated that Alonso was left out because of a knock and that no deal has been agreed.
"Xabi is with us in Singapore, and will train with the rest of the squad. He was injured ahead of the Thailand game, people can say what they like about that," a spokesman told the Press Association.
"And there has been no deal agreed with anyone for his transfer to anyone."
Real Madrid have made it clear that Alonso is their main target with new sporting director Pardeza claiming that he is one of a kind in an era where playmakers are rare.
It bothers me that recent quotes from Pelligrini says that we're asking too much for him, when they topped the world record transfer bid twice in the space of a couple of days.
If they really want Alonso, they can bid the money Rafa's asking for him. I'm sure Rafa knows this, and I suspect that Alonso, too, knows this. I don't consider it at all a case of 'want to play for the club or leave', but more that he'd be happy to play for either club wherever he finds himself next season.
They've screwed us over with Owen already, here's hoping it doesn't happen again.
Alright apparently.
Hicks has sold and Gillette has sold 20%.
Not sure when it will be announced.
Hence the quietness in our transfer dealings. Make sense right? Neither will have any stack in the club so don't want to front money from transfers.
and more Silva news.
Liverpool are reportedly ready to 'intensify' their efforts to sign David Silva from Valencia.
Rafa Benitez is said to have been encouraged by the Spaniards' apparently successful retention of David Villa, believing this will have enhanced his negotiating position in bidding for Silva. The proposed swap deal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Samuel Eto'o would seemingly indicates that Villa will not, as expected, be moving to the Nou Camp.
'Valencia, a club in severe financial crisis, may be forced to reduce their initial £25m demand for Silva, which put Benitez off in May and the manager will be able to offer the entire amount up front if Real Madrid adhere to his own demands that their £30m-plus outlay on Xabi Alonso comes in one upfront payment, as did their £80m to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo,' reports The Independent.
The newspaper also says that, with regards to the sale of Alonso, 'Benitez is also holding out for a Madrid player to be included in the deal, with striker Alvaro Negredo still a possibility. If Real agree to include Negredo then the defender Alvaro Arbeloa would be likely to join Alonso in moving to the Bernabeu. Silva is reluctant to switch to England but will make an exception for Liverpool where he would be joining Spain team-mates Pepe Reina and Fernando Torres.'
And more.
Rafa Benitez is reportedly hoping to use his connections at Valencia to bring David Silva to Liverpool.
Silva has been linked with a move away from the Mestalla all summer, although Valencia have consistently stated that they are not willing to sell their best players.
However, according to The Telegraph, Benitez believes that Los Che do have to raise some money, and with David Villa now unlikely to move, it is Silva who might have to be sold.
Liverpool had earlier refused to pay Valencia's asking price of €29 million for the tricky playmaker, but they now believe they can land him at a reduced price.
Even if Valencia do agree to sell, the Reds will face another obstacle in that Silva has always stated that he intends to remain in Spain, although the Reds believe their large Spanish contingent can lure him to Anfield.

My 2 year old dog could of got a plain t-shirt , added a couple of logos and 3 stripes.
Real Madrid could be set to sign Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa as early as next week.
The Spanish right-back could be about to make a return to his native country in a deal worth around €5 million (£4.5m), according to a report in The Sun today.
Officials at the Santiago Bernabeu have recently expressed their ongoing interest in signing the former Deportiva La Coruna stopper this summer.
Los Merengues' sporting director, Jorge Valdano, said, "Arbeloa is a basic part of our plans."
Fellow director Miguel Pardeza commented in the last few days, "Liverpool do not really have the desire to let him go, even though he has just a year left on his contract.
"But there is a month to go in the market and anything can change, and I would not deny that we would very much like to have Arbeloa."
Meanwhile, Arbeloa's agent, Manuel Garcia Quillon, has said he expects the matter to be resolved soon.
"Discussions with Real are not over and I expect a solution early next week," Quillon said.
Liverpool have already installed a replacement for Arbeloa in the form of ex-Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson
Would like to have seen him hang around, would have been more than covered at RB with him and Johnson. But being WC season I can understand his want for first team football and to be in Spain.
At the moment, I'm not sure what to think.
Rafa Benitez today revealed he has told Xabi Alonso that he should stay at Liverpool.
Alonso received a rapturous ovation from the Singapore fans as he watched the Reds train on Friday night.
"I was talking to him yesterday and telling him to listen to the fans. They love Xabi," Benitez told a press conference in Singapore.
"I said to him, 'Maybe you have to stay.'
"You can see he is a really good player and I'll be really pleased if he stays. All the players and his teammates want him to stay. If we keep Xabi I will be very pleased."
Official website.
Hmm, one day he's staying and the next he's leaving... sounds very familiar to our Ronaldo saga, doesn't it? Don't think Alonso's said outright that he wants to leave though, but I'm pretty sure he's thinking it.
Anyhoo, I doubt he'll stay. He'll leave, you'll get Silva or a new mid... voila.
It almost seems as though Alonso has said if they offer something you're happy with then I am happy to go but if I end up staying I am happy here too.
I think Alonso is beginning to realise which club wants and will respect him more, even after last seasons debacle. Real have broken the transfer record twice this season yet they're haggling over 5m? If anything that is a huge kick in the nuts for Alonso, and after all that do you think Alonso will get to play all the games he would at Liverpool? In a world cup season? I highly doubt it.
Honestly I think Real Madrid is a TERRIBLE career choice for any footballer (except Ronaldo), they don't care about the players they just care about how many trophies they can buy.

Its bad to see all this cash floating round making a players decision for them in certain cases. Pellegrini is a good manager and showed that with Villareal, i just wonder how many transfers he has had a say in so far, a stupid chairman is giving a very respectable manager a bad name in the process.
It's a reason why I don't ever see Rafa working in Real, even though he's a supporter. He likes control, and Madrid takes that away from you.
Anyway, there's a lot of talk on the official website about how fans in Singapore are supporting Xabi, telling him to stay and everything, it's all very.. nice. I'm hoping he'll know which fans will love him more, which manager will respect him more, and which players he'll play better with. I'm quite confident that he's happy to stay, and if not, I'm sure he's professional enough not to kick up a fuss, specially with the World Cup coming up.

Nice 5-0 win against Singapore :D Good to see a Torres cameo and ending it with a goal and Kuyt bagged himself 3 assists too. Nemeth getting a brace will only help his confidence and with Fat Paris (Voro) and Riera getting goals we looked pretty lethal albeit against weak teams. Watching Spurs at the Wembley Cup hasnt exactly filled me with fear for the first game of season, dont look threatening at all even with a full strength side out, more scared of Bojan and the Barca Reserves :snicker
Finally, get this winning streak rolling, 60+ games to go .

Liverpool's owners have concluded a deal to re-finance the loan they took to buy the club in 2007.
Tom Hicks (http://topics.skysports.com/Tom+Hicks/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and George Gillett (http://topics.skysports.com/George+Gillett/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif are not expected to issue a statement, but the deal is believed to be for another year and will see them paying back £60million of the original debt.
Negotiations between the Royal Bank (http://topics.skysports.com/Royal+Bank/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif of Scotland, Wachovia and the American co-owners continued for months amid the global credit crunch, and it was feared the banks would call in the loan, while both Hicks and Gillett have unsuccessfully sought someone to take a minority stake for around £100m.
But a source close to the owners has confirmed that a deal was concluded before last weekend's deadline for re-financing the package.
Debt cut
The original £290m debt has been reduced to £230m, with £60m being repaid, half immediately.
Hicks, 63, and Gillett, 70, purchased Liverpool in 2007 for £174m, taking on £44.8m of liabilities.
They had a one-year arrangement and then negotiated another year with a six-month option.
That option was granted and expired at the weekend but critics, particularly fans' groups, will see this new agreement as papering over the cracks of a regime that has been unable to advance the club in the face of financial competition from Chelsea, Manchester United, (http://topics.skysports.com/Manchester+United/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif Real Madrid, Barcelona, and now Manchester City. (http://topics.skysports.com/Manchester+City/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif
At the time of the purchase, Hicks and Gillett maintained that financing the debt would not fall on the club but Liverpool now have to find around £40m a year to service the debt, which has enraged fans' groups and limited manager Rafa Benitez's (http://topics.skysports.com/Rafa+Benitez/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif transfer budget.
The owners have also failed to finance a new stadium, with preliminary work on the Stanley Park venture halted last season.
In the run-up to the new deal being concluded, Gillett sold his 80% stake in the Montreal Canadians ice hockey club for £350m, while Hicks is trying to offload the Texas Rangers baseball team.
Fans' proposal
The ShareLiverpool group re-launched their own takeover plans last week for, in effect, a fans' co-operative, and believe it would be a more tempting proposal than that just negotiated by Hicks and Gillett.
"The deal we are hearing about for the re-financing of the Americans' loans is really what we expected," said the group's spokesman, Rogan Taylor. (http://topics.skysports.com/Rogan+Taylor/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif
"These are the indications we have had from RBS for a while, I would be interested to know really what Wachovia's view is. It has been rumoured that they were very unsure about this new deal.
"It is little more than an expensive fix - just sticking plaster and making things more difficult for the club to progress in the long run.
"It is still very short term, year to year, if that. The owners are not able to take the club forward."
He added: "We produced our own plans again last week, and that is based over a much longer period and aimed at the banks.
"There can be political pressure here. We, the taxpayers, own RBS and maybe they will eventually see that they can get most of their money back with our scheme and it is a much longer-termed plan."
I'll be honest, I have no idea whether this is good or bad news.

As it means they have been unable to find buyers, even at a reduced priced.
Now that it is sorted though, we should see some movement in the transfer market.
Looks like Dossena is gone.
Sky Sport 24 reported last night that Premier League giants Liverpool had accepted a €4.5 million bid from Serie A club Napoli for Italy international full-back Andrea Dossena.
The 27-year-old had expressed his desire to return to the peninsula after enduring a difficult time at Anfield last season and was also linked with a move to Juventus earlier this summer, but Napoli have now moved to fill the void left by the departure of Daniele Mannini on the left flank.
“It is just a matter of days,” agent Roberto La Florio said this morning on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
“The two clubs have reached an agreement, Liverpool have accepted Napoli’s proposal but I am not in a position to say more.
“As far as Andrea is concerned, there will be no problems. As I said, it’s just a matter of days. As soon as Napoli call us, we will sort out everythink.”
On the other hand, Dossena is still cautious and refused to be drawn on his future yesterday: “I don’t know anything yet, we’ll see what happens in the coming days,” he said.

Liverpool are in negotiations with Roma concerning the potential switch of Alberto Aquilani to Anfield, adding further fuel to the speculation that Xabi Alonso is set to depart the club soon.
Reds manager Rafa Bentiez has reportedly told Alonso, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid, that he must get his future sorted out by the end of the week, but it seems a possible replacement for the Basque has already been lined up.
British broadsheet newspaper The Guardian claims that Liverpool are in talks regarding bringing Aquilani to England, as Benitez is under pressure to find a replacement for Alonso quickly, as the English season begins on August 15.
A possible price tag of £16 million for the 25-year-old has been mooted in some quarters, with Roma hinting last week that they would be prepared to sell the player should the right offer come in.
If this is true and Rafa is giving Alonso an ultimatum, good on him. If a player wont commit to the club, then we don't want him.
You either want to play for the famous red, or you don't. It's that simple.
It had to come, Rafa won't want to be caugh with his trousers down if Alonso decides to leave on the 11th hour.
Alvaro Arbeloa's protracted switch from Liverpool to Real Madrid gathered momentum today as Los Blancos have agreed an undisclosed fee with the Reds for the Spanish international, as confirmed by the club's official website.
A Liverpool spokesperson said, "We have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the transfer of the player, subject to him completing a medical."
The right-back, who played for Liverpool for two-and-a-half years, has already expressed his excitement at the transfer, indicating personal terms will not prove problematic.
"My signing for Real Madrid is closed," he is quoted by Marca as saying last night.
The future of Xabi Alonso remains uncertain, as the deep-lying playmaker is longing to follow Arbeloa to Real, yet a stumbling block could be Liverpool's valuation of the midfielder.
Despite the club not revealing the money received from any potential Arbeloa deal, a report in The Telegraph explained that the Merseyside outfit could expect £10 million from both Arbeloa, and Andrea Dossena's departures.
The Italian defender is expected to complete a transfer to Italy, with Napoli interested in his signature.
Dear I say it, if we lose Arby and Dossena and only gain Johnson, our SQUAD will be weaker.
Though I am hoping that Rafa was just waiting on the funds from these two before making his purhcases.
Now with the team back in England hopefully some positive movement will ensue.

Fernando Torres has warned Liverpool not to sell compatriot Xabi Alonso.
Real Madrid continue to track the central midfielder, who is keen to return to his homeland.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez (http://topics.skysports.com/Rafa+Benitez/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif insists he wants Alonso (http://topics.skysports.com/Xabi+Alonso/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif to stay, but Real are continuing to push for a deal.
They have already agreed terms to land Alvaro Arbeloa, and Torres (http://topics.skysports.com/Fernando+Torres/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif is just hoping that Alonso does not follow him to the Santiago Bernabeu.
"It would be a bad piece of work if Xabi left," Torres told The Sun.
"He plays his cards close to his chest so I don't know what is going to happen.
"I'd put Xabi's own wishes ahead of everything else, of course, but he's got three years left on his contract with us and I'd love it if he stays.
"It would be a serious loss for Liverpool if he left this summer."
Arbeloa, who is set to finalise his move to Madrid, confirmed that Alonso had made his feelings known to Benitez.
"Xabi and I shared a room on tour and explained our situations to Benitez and he made us clear on the club's standpoint," he added.
Listen to Torres, he speaks sense .

Trying to make sense out of Arbeloa's transfer to RM but i am still a bit confused.
Real Madrid have the best right back in the world imo in Ramos. I know Cannavaro went back to Juventus this summer so was he bought because Ramos will be moved to centre back? or just for cover?
If it is just for cover then they have bought someone too talented to sit on the bench alot.
Also, is this RMs first defender bought this summer? and does anyone know if they have filled the DM position that M Diarra and L Diarra tried and failed to secure.
Cheers :)

I'm not sure why he is going to RM, surely he knows he's going to be a bench warmer for the majority of the season.
I still think RM will get hammered by Liverpool, United, Chelsea (if they come against these) & Barcelona this year, they've bought all these attacking players yet have no foundation in defence, we all know how much Ronaldo likes to get back and help defend .

Second defender with Albiol moving there ;) Ezequiel Garays back there now too so aint looking half bad setup. Arby will prob slot in left back as they dont really have a class one, Marcelos not consistent and Heinzes knocking on a bit. Ramos-Albiol-Pepe/Garay-Arby doesnt look bad compared to slow Cannavaro and Heinze.

Insua got games. Just he went to the Olympics and Aurelio came into form, hard to drop someone whose playing impressively for the club. Rafa will give him the chance like he will with Darby now Arbys backup spots gone.

If Metzelder stays injury-free their defence might be half-decent this year :)
Listen to Torres, he speaks sense .
"It would be a bad piece of work if Xabi left," Torres told The Sun.
Anyway, I guess if Dudek can talk about Xabi leaving, Torres can do the same about him staying.
I'm not too worried about the fullback position right now actually. I don't think there's too big of a chance Johnson will turn out a worse player than Arbeloa, so if he's around the same, we've wasted 15M, but if he's better, good business. As for backup, it kind of baffles me how people say give the youth a chance, and when they finally do get a chance with a backup player leaving, they say 'sign someone else'. Baffling. Darby and Insua, though I haven't seen much of them, from what I hear, one is pretty much on the brink of getting a few appearances and another is ready for the first team. Aurelio is plenty good backup if Insua's out injured.
Cheers :)
Lassana Diarra failing at DM? He's one of the best DMs in Spain and maybe even Europe. He's a class DM.
Anyhoo, Madrid also bought Albiol.

What i would do to have back Finnan and Riise , oh how i miss those guys
I used to love it when Riise would score one of his specials , i remember the time in the Community Sheild when he ran from our half and WHOLLOPED one in past Cech , ill never forget that , oh and when he HAMMERED one in past Birmingham when we beat them like 8 - 0 , one of the best goals i have ever seen.
And Finnans crossing was just perfect.

In terms of squad depth, he is a big loss.
If Johnson gets injured we really only have Carra. And with skittles having done his hamstring, we can't afford to have to play Carra at RB.
Yeah, his awesomeness shone through last season when uz hammered them.
Uz? Think you're confused a bit there, mate.
And obviously seeing as how they got hammered in one game where the entire team was poor OBVIOUSLY means he's a poor player. Barcelona got beat 2-1 by Espanyol so obviously Messi, Xavi, Eto'o, Henry, Iniesta are ****. When we got "hammered" at OT, it obviously means Rooney, Ronaldo, Rio, Vidic, etc. are all ****...
Xabi Alonso has opened the door to a potential move to Real Madrid (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/realmadrid) by submitting a formal transfer request at Liverpool (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/liverpool), according to reports. Real have made no secret of their interest in buying Alonso this summer, but until now the midfielder had refused to show his own hand.
According to the Liverpool Echo, however, he has now submitted a formal written request. Rafael Benítez has always insisted that he is keen to hold on to Alonso, and held talks with the midfielder during the club's pre-season tour of Asia, but may now be forced to sell.
The Real president Florentino Pérez described the 27-year-old Alonso as a crucial target yesterday, saying: "It is fundamental that we sign Xabi Alonso. He is a key player to our project."
The Madrid club had an initial offer of £24m rejected earlier this summer, but are now expected to return with an improved bid that is closer to Liverpool's £30m valuation. Such a fee would represent a significant profit on a player who cost Liverpool £10.7m when they signed him from Real Sociedad in 2004.

SSN are reporting the same.
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has edged closer to Real Madrid after handing in a transfer request at Anfield, according to reports.
The Spain international has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.
Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso (http://topics.skysports.com/Xabi+Alonso/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif in the region of £30million, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu.
But the Reds may now be prepared to allow the former Real Sociedad star to leave following accounts he has submitted a written transfer request to the club's hierarchy.
Speculation suggests a deal will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a fee reported to be in the region of £25m.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez (http://topics.skysports.com/Rafa+Benitez/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif has maintained he does not want to sell Alonso, but the midfielder is said to have been angered by his manager's apparent desire to sell in order to finance an unsuccessful pursuit of Gareth Barry (http://topics.skysports.com/Gareth+Barry/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif last summer.
The Reds signed Alonso for £10.5m in 2004, shortly after Benitez arrived on Merseyside, and the 27-year-old helped secure the famous UEFA Champions League final success over AC Milan (http://topics.skysports.com/AC+Milan/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif in his debut season.
Finally movement. Im at the stage where I'm not fussed either way, I just want something to happen and the team to be sorted for the new season.
I just hope that the Lee Cattermole rumors are rubbish otherwise we are right ****ed.

No saga. Still on going.
According to Rome-based daily Il Messaggero, Italian international midfielder Alberto Aquilani (http://www.goal.com/en/people/italy/7452/alberto-aquilani) is ready to turn his back on his hometown club Roma (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/italy/7/roma) and commit his long-term future to Premier League giants Liverpool (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/england/98/liverpool).
‘Il Principino’ has allegedly agreed a five-year contract with the Anfield outfit worth €4 million-per-season.
However, Liverpool have yet to enter formal discussions with the Lupi as Aquilani’s move to England (http://goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2009/07/31/1413998/report-roma-ace-alberto-aquilani-agrees-liverpool-terms#) is directly tied to Xabi Alonso’s future, with the Spaniard reportedly on the verge of finalising a move to Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid.
Aquilani only penned a new contract with the Giallorossi last May, tying him to the Olimpico until June 2013, but president Rosella Sensi is prepared to sacrifice the youth product to ease the club’s financial problems and is hoping to get at least €20m out of the deal.
Meanwhile, Roma have reportedly turned down the chance to sign Nigerian striker Victor Obinna on loan from Inter, setting their sights on Milan winger Ignazio Abate instead.
No quotes, hard to believe anything the papers print these days.
I just hope we're not looking into buying a crock.
Losing Alonso and replacing him with Aquilani would be poor, imo... but I can't think of a lot of class CMs you can get tbh. After all, Alonso wasn't exactly world class when you bought him.
EDIT: Lol Feli, thanks for pointing it out.

It would definitely be poor.
We'd have to pay at least 50M to buy him after we've sold him for 25

I don't know about that. From all accounts Aquilani is a very talented player. Similar mould to Alonso but has a stunning long range shot.
Remember when Alonso came in? The two words on just about everyones lips was "Alonso Who"?
Also, good to see the young ones signed up. Really hope they break through and become first team regulars this season.
Liverpool have confirmed both Stephen Darby (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/darby/) and Jay Spearing (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/spearing/) have put pen to paper on new Anfield deals. Darby and Spearing agreed to commit their futures to the club earlier this month, and the formalities of the deals have now been completed with both players having signed new contracts which will keep them on Merseyside until at least June 2012.
Speaking a few weeks ago after agreeing the terms of the deal, Spearing said: "It wasn't a difficult decision to make. As soon as Rafa said he wanted to offer me a new deal, I wanted to put pen to paper.
"This is what I've been working for over the past three years. Since I signed my first contract with the club, all I've wanted is a new deal and the fact the boss has the confidence to offer me one makes it extra special."
Darby was equally as thrilled at the prospect of continuing his career with the Reds.
"It's something I've worked hard for and it's nice to see that hard work being rewarded," he said.
"As a boy I dreamed of playing for Liverpool, so as soon as they offered the contract there was only one thought in my mind and that was to sign it.
"Last season I was fortunate enough to play for the first-team twice. Now I want to build on that, work hard in training and hopefully get a few more opportunities."
Don't believe it for a second.
Liverpool (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/england/98/liverpool) could be ready to attempt to prise David Villa (http://www.goal.com/en/people/spain/1713/david-villa) away from Valencia (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/spain/126/valencia) as the Reds prepare for the sale of Xabi Alonso (http://www.goal.com/en/people/spain/1766/xabi-alonso).
Alonso is understood to have handed in a transfer request at Anfield and a move to Real Madrid this summer now seems imminent, with some reports suggesting the deal could be completed this weekend.
'Pool are holding out for €35 million (£30m) for the Basque midfielder, and The Sun is reporting manager Rafael Benitez could use the money to move for Villa.
It has been widely suggested Villa will leave Los Che as the club struggles financially, already forcing them into the sale of Raul Albiol to Los Merengues, but the Spain international striker has already turned down summer transfers to the Bernabeu and Barcelona.
However, the UK tabloid believes Benitez is confident he can tempt Villa to Merseyside by offering him a striker partnership with Spain team-mate Fernando Torres. 'Rafa' is hoping this offer can override Villa's desire to remain in his home country.
Liverpool have also been linked with Valencia's highly-regarded midfielder David Silva.
don't believe it for a second.
OMG liek DAVID VILA is totaly coming to anfield wtfbbq!!!

Well , there isnt anything going on transfer wise , which is even more depressing , but its what i have come to expect with Liverpool.
If Alonso does go then we are pretty much ****ed , if we cant even sign Silva with all the ooo-ing and aarrr-ing thats been going on , then i doubt we would be able to sign a player who can replace Alonso.
With all that we still havnt got a decent secondary striker neither , what will we do if Torres gets injured like he usually does ?
Play N'gog all season ?
If Rafa didnt waste money on players we didnt need * cough * Johson * cough * then we might of actually gotten someone we do need * cough * Negredo * cough *
Oh wait , we could sign another 16 year old from Denmark  :snicker
I mean lets be honest , it isnt asiff we need a right back , i doubt that Arbeloa would of gone if we hadnt signed Johnson , and we can still play Carragher at right back , its just wasting money in my book.
If he performs how he did at the last BIG club he played for , ill be ****ing fuming.

I agree with all of it bar the RB.
We had no strength in depth at right back. Carra is a solution, he is a stop gap. Arbeloa was solid, but not a title winning full back. I would have loved from him stay and we really would have had the back line covered.
Striker wise, I really don't know what Rafa sees in Ngog. He doesn't show signs of eventually becoming a good player and doesn't even show flashes of fluke.
We do need that second striker, we HAD that second striker in Keane. But lets not go there.
People complaining about the signing of youngsters are incredibly short sighted. The signing of youth players is essential for the future of the club. I had to give my dad a good beatdown on this subject the other day.

I can see your want of big name signings because i want the same thing but its important to bring in some youth as well. Hopefully Rafa has done signing youth for the time and is gonna pull off a good signing.

Johnson was to boost the English presence in the team because of the UFEA regulations, and to be honest after Barry there wasn't much choice for replacing a position with even a half decent affordable English player.

Agreed for the most part but in today's game of win now....waiting years down the road is not really that much of an option for some clubs.
You see it on most of the Big 4's message boards after losses where they want everyone fired unless they win it all....now, I am not saying that message boards dictate a fan base but i do think the attitude of win it all now or else is abound amongst the Big 4's fans.

Exactly. Look at Arsenal.

There is a balance that every team has to ask themselves.
On one hand, breeding young talent is in fact essential and can be HUGE for teams as it gives them years to develop AND see through their signees at a cheaper price then being forced to buy them from others.
But, some teams over-value their prospects, imo, and it ends up biting some teams in the *** as they pass on proven players (not saying stars but solid guys) for the younger, possibly ineffective youngster
Some teams it works out....others it doesn't

Pains me to say it, but it's something that SAF nailed pretty much as soon as he took over. Knowing when to bloody new talent and throw em in the deep.
Arsne prides himself on it, but the stats don't like. His kids haven't won anything and I think he is starting to change tact, evident with the purcahse of Arshavin.

I'm pretty sure all those players wanted to move on of their own accord as well like. Arsenal never really did splash the cash. In a few years when the Chelsea team will be collecting the pension, Arsenal will be back challenging for the top spot.
Only problem is Chelsea can afford to go and chuck another £200million about when the chairman gets bored.
Any one ever doubt how popular Torres is now?
Fernando Torres’ (http://www.goal.com/en/people/spain/1442/fernando-torres) No. 9 shirt has overtaken Steven Gerrard (http://www.goal.com/en/people/england/1902/steven-gerrard)’s as the most popular selling shirt amongst Liverpool (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/england/98/liverpool-news)fans.
According to Anfield commercial director Ian Ayre, the Spaniard has become absolutely vital to the club’s commercial success.
“All the players are important but it's evident certain ones are crucial,” he told the News of the World.
“Fernando is a global icon and a great footballer. They go hand in hand. From a commercial standpoint, he's a huge attraction.”
Ayre also went on to reveal that Torres’ shirt now outsold the Liverpool captain’s and that the Spaniard’s No. 9 was the club’s biggest seller.
“Torres is the highest-selling shirt here. I'm not sure when he actually overtook Steven Gerrard, and there's not a huge difference, but he is our biggest seller,” he explained.
“Being a global brand, we have a big opportunity to push on - but we know it's not all about shirts.”
The striker has proved a huge success on Merseyside since signing from Atletico Madrid (http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/08/02/1417310/fernando-torres-shirt-overtakes-steven-gerrards-as-liverpool#) in 2007.

We need to get ourselves sorted and fast.

I hope like hell Rafa asks for someone in return.
Liverpool have confirmed they are in talks with Real Madrid over the proposed transfer of Xabi Alonso, with the Spain international welcoming the discussions over his future.
Alonso has been a long-term target of the La Liga giants, who have been restructuring their squad with a number of high-profile big-money signings throughout the summer.
Rafa Benitez was initially unwilling to part company with the talented midfielder, but his stance softened when the former Real Sociedad man handed in a written transfer request.
The Spanish giants have so far been unwilling to meet Liverpool's asking price for the Euro 2008 winner, which is believed to be in the region of £30million.
Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow met with Madrid executive director Jose Angel Sanchez in Barcelona on Sunday to discuss Alonso, with the Reds in the city for a friendly against Espanyol.
Purslow confirmed to Spanish newspaper AS that he had spoken with Sanchez but that no agreement had been reached.
The Reds supremo admitted the meeting had been arranged by Benitez, with everyone at Anfield becoming frustrated with the ongoing press speculation over the possible switch.
He said: "This (meeting) has only served to put our positions on the table. We need to continue talking.
"Rafa arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense.
"Now, I have been impressed by Madrid and Jose Angel. They are friends and will remain so."
Alonso claimed he was unaware of the meeting but added: "It's reassuring to know that Madrid and Liverpool are talking seriously now.
"I decided a long time ago to stay on the margin of everything that was happening.
"My stance has been clear, as you all know. I'm a professional and I must wait for an agreement to be reached, but I hope it is resolved soon, for better or for worse."

Here is some more news. Getting interesting now.
Liverpool (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/england/98/liverpool-news) have signed Roma (http://www.goal.com/en/teams/italy/7/roma-news) midfielder Alberto Aquilani, according to the latest reports from Spain.
Marca claims Roma have accepted an €18million bid for the Italian midfielder. Reds manager Rafael Benitez is said to be keen on the Italian.
The report suggests the Spanish coach has moved in quickly in an attempt to have an alternative to Xabi Alonso. Voices in Spain claim Alonso is on the verge of joining Real Madrid, and it appears Liverpool have wasted no time in signing his replacement.
It is said Liverpool are still trying to negotiate a deal with Real Madrid for Alonso. According to Marca, the Reds want nothing less than €35m for the Spanish international.
Sky Sport Italia are speculating that Aquilani has agreed to a four year deal worth €4m per season with the Reds, but the move is hinging on Alonso's passage to the Bernabeu.
Despite the reports in Spain, there has been no official confirmation from Roma regarding the news (http://goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2009/08/03/1419347/liverpool-sign-roma-ace-alberto-aquilani-report#) that Aquilani has signed for the Anfield-based club.
And some more on Alonso.
12.22: Apologies but we really must go back to the Alonso story, with the Liverpool Echo claiming 'Real Madrid indicated they are willing to pay in the region of £30 million for his services' during talks on Sunday night.
Real's coffers look set to be boosted by the sales of Wesley Sneijder to Inter Milan and Rafael van der Vaart back to Hamburg.
30m for Alonso, and a replacement for 18m in AA. Giving us 12m plus whatever was left in the bank. Should have enough for Silva too. I would be happy.

I don't know, if you were to have a list of the worlds worst press then Britian would be sitting alone at number 1 and very bag gap until number 2.
Aquilani? Hmm...
If you guys also buy Silva, than Aquilani would be a good signing.
If all you do is buy Aquilani to replace Xabi and Rafa calls it an end to the transfer window, then it's a bad signing.
Im sure this guy is talented, i cant say for certain because i dont know too much about him, but from what ive heard hes a bit of a crock?
Anyone want to clear that up for me?
Also im concerned. Watched the highlights from the espanyol match and we were trash despite playing a fairly strong team. First goal was the result of a horrid defensive error from Agger and the second was a fail as well.
With less then two weeks until the season starts and the uncertainty over Alonso (although its starting to look clearer now) i think im right to be concerned. You can only say "oh its ok, its just pre season" for so long because if we play like that on the opening day we will be spurning three points.
And yeh Kiwi is right about the British press :]. Daily Mail anyone? The Sun? ^^

I've bolded and enlarged the comma for you.
I tell ya what, if we DO get the money we want for Alonso, as well as AA we could see a very high profile signing. Maybe Villa wouldn't be such a stretch?
Xabi Alonso has been subject to arguably the longest-running transfer saga of this summer, and after a long period of chasing the Liverpool midfielder, Real Madrid are reportedly set to match the poaching price placed on the player's head.
Anfield officials met with the Galacticos executive director-general Jose Angel Sanchez before the Reds' pre-season game against Espanyol, in order to put to rest the speculation surrounding the future of the pass-master.
The Liverpool Daily Post claims that the 'White House' is willing to match the €35 million asking price, and add a further €2.5m based on the performances put out by the Spaniard during the first two years of his time at the Bernabeu.
Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow spoke about the meeting (http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/08/04/1420853/real-madrid-set-to-match-liverpools-asking-price-for-xabi#) between the officials of the two powerhouses, and outlined the story so far.
"This [meeting] has only served to put our positions on the table," said Purslow.
“We need to continue talking.
“Rafa [Benitez] arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense."
Purslow hinted that a deal would reach fruition, but did not specify a timeframe.
"Now, I have been impressed by Madrid and Jose Angel. They [Benitez and Jose Angel] are friends and will remain so,” he concluded.

Well 35m, plus the money from Arby and Dossena, plus what's left in the bank and a whisper from Torres could very well prompt Villa to REQUEST to leave.
To be honest don't no too much about this fellow.
The fact Real are in for him too means nothing to me.
Steven Defour's agent has claimed the Standard Liege midfielder couldn't turn down the chance to join Liverpool if they came in for him.
With Xabi Alonso's future continuing to dominate the headlines as Real Madrid look to secure his signing, the likes of Roma's Alberto Aquilani and Defour have been linked with a move to Anfield.
Defour, 21, has also been linked with Real.
And quoted in the Daily Mail, he says: "I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill."
His agent Paul Stefani added: "Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool - they are looking at him too.
"Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those - and Liege would not stand in his way."

I'll give a couple of reasons.
1. Market inflation (Caused by Real)
2. Torres was a virtually an unknown striker
3. Spain winning Euro's boosted his price
4. Valencia aren't so deperate to sell anymore
I think that makes a valid point. haha true ... but still..I hope Madrid crash and burn.. they have actually ruined football
They didn't ruin football, they just ruined this summer's transfer window. City are doing exactly the same thing but on a smaller scale. Chelsea were doing it a few years back and Madrid were just as bad the first time around. Only reason it's making so much fuss now is because it's more mulah and the rest of the world is in an economic crisis.
Still, apparently Madrid didn't learn their lesson the first time around... the same lesson Chelsea and City fail to comprehend as well: you can't buy long-term success. Madrid might win the league next year, but they won't be a huge force for years to come... eventually their players' egos will ruin the atmosphere in the DR and the team will fall apart.

i posted this wall of a text awhile ago , it explains my negativity at the moment ..
Im sick of getting my hopes up on players signing , and they never do , Which is why im always so negative towards rumours and the tabloids who are splurting the stupid rumours out.
The ones that make me laugh the most are the ones where " my brothers mate works at Anfeild and he heard that Rafa is lining up a signing for Silva "
LMFAO , who ever beleives that crap is so gullable.
I remember when we won the European Cup for the 5th time , according to the tabloids we was linked with practically every player in the world , and who did we end up signing ? literally no one.
Manchester City is a prime example , when the Arabs took over , everyday back of the Mirror and the Sun , MAN CITY MAKING BID FOR KAKA , MAN CITY MAKING MOVE FOR RONALDINHO .. i swear those idiots at the Daily Mirror make up that crap in their lunch time  And David Beckham  ROFL
The only legit source out there is Sky Sports , everything else is complete and utter ********. Do you guys honestly think that there are people out there other than Benitez and the back room staff etc. who know about who Rafa wants to sign ?
Its just as easy for me to say i work at Anfeild and often play golf and eat lunch with Benitez , then spurt out a load of ****
I know it will come across asiff im moaning and complaining and what not , but wouldnt you guys when year after ****ing year we never win the Premiership and you see ****s like the Mancs and Chelsea grab it.
I know we came as close as ever last season , making stupid mistakes against silly teams and we need to build upon that. But singning players like Silva who we dont need isnt helping anybody. We need to fill in the gaps , like a secondary striker or maybe a well experienced left back.
I know it sounds sad but i've been let down so many times when it comes to transfer windows , which is why i never ever get my hopes up on players we are linked with. :snicker
To be honest , since Bentiez started he has only made 1 big name signing. Torres , and thats it. Everyone else was practically nobodys before they came to Liverpool. Yes Reina was number 1 at Villarel and Alonso was a fairly decent act at Sociedad , but compare those 2 players to all the flops he has signed in the past..
Lucas , Dossena , Aurellio , Itanjde , Degen , Babel , Voronin , Cisse , Moritentes , Zenden.
Yeah a couple are still young and who knows what they will develop into , but im sick of waiting. Yes he has bought players who have developed into great players and what not , but if we want to be challegening for the title we need to be doing it now , not waiting for players to develop and mould etc. im sick of waiting year after year.
Last season we had problems in the full back position , Arbeloa struggled sometimes but my god , we was in dier needs for a left back. We have a young player in Insua who has played tons of matches for the reserves and is more than ready for Premiership game time , but Benitez persitantly kept on playing Aurellio and ****ing Dossena.
He needs to sign big names who are well experienced to fill in the gaps and who are good players who are willing to win the title , not ****ing 16 year olds from Denmark.
Lol , rant over.
Im sorry if i have come across as a moaner and a pesimistic person in this thread , but for the reasons stated above , im never optimistic about anything football at this time of year..
When 16th August comes , i shall be a changed man !

We dont need Silva but need a LB when we have 3? That makes sense, face it against the lesser clubs we lacked a spark, a bit of creativity and flair to unlock the 10 men defences. What will a LB give us exactly? A better defence which we obviously need from the 0-0 draws that cost us....Clearly you dont have knowledge of what we lacked at times, why buy another defender when we lost only 2 last season? Wasnt exactly the LB causing a lack of creativity in attack was it? IF we get Silva and a replacement mid i would be MUCH happier than getting say Lahm and a replacement mid. Gotta love you naming the flops too when hes signed Masch, Skrtel, Agger, Kuyt, Riera which of course are poor...

Yeah because thats extremely logical.
Your making out asiff i said we need an entire new defence.
I said we need a expereinced left back , which we do , not a new defence like your insinuating.
Id rather have a solid , experienced left back than two dodgy ones , just because we lost two games all last season doesnt mean Dossena and Aurellio are the perfect two left backs for Liverpool.
Besides , im sure i read Dossena is leaving and that Aurellio is out for something like 6 months or weeks , which leaves no other option for Rafa to play Insua , if so , and he performs like he did for the reserves then i shall be happy :D

It depends on his wants and desires. If he wants to play with players from his native country, then yeah he'll choose Liverpool. If he wants to play at a club where he has more of a chance to win trophies, he'll pick United. Not saying Liverpool can't win trophies, just that United are the better team and are more likely to win them.

The reason Man United win a lot of trophies is because they kick the ball right up field, which makes the defence struggle a little bit.

Read that an hour ago, I remember a theory someone put here, Fergie only attacks other teams when he fears them and feels he needs to rattle them with mind games. Sorry, i meant tevez aint a loss, therefore didnt need replacing. Ronaldo however is gonna be a massive loss and i think SAF is kidding himself that anyone in our team can replace his goals.
AA, aint signed yet though:confused:
Hes a bit more attacking than Xabi anyway. Good player
What im concerned about is that apparently hes a bit of a crock? If we do sign him and end up having to pair lucas with masch half the time because hes injured that is bad news xD.

I can see United fans wincing everytime Owen hits the deck, I feel he'll get a lengthy injury. Tevez and Ronaldo made up a third of your premiership goals last season (23 of 68.) & a third of your total goals too (41 of 118.). Thats a massive chuck of goals that won't be replaced by Owen or Valencia.

You never know Lucas might have the season of his career and score 15 goals and assist ..... Sorry.. umm... :snicker
The reason Man United win a lot of trophies is because they kick the ball right up field, which makes the defence struggle a little bit.
Happened in our match last night. Should've won, but our opponents kept doing that, so we lost, even though we were battering them :(
Do we play in blue? Do we have SAMSUNG on our kit? Do we have a diving c*nt called Drogba playing up front for us? No we don't...
Point being: we're not Chelsea... we don't hoof the ball to our forwards, we actually play with a good passing game... :suspect:

Treble winning season tevez id have back, last season, oh heck no! He scored 5 premiership goals!
I think Owen will do ok for us,i dont think he'll get Injured. At newcastle they had the worst physios ever, there players were ALWAYS getting injured! Hopefully Berba and Roon will stay upfront instead of having to drop deep to sacrfrice for Ronaldo!

He has stated hundreds of times that his boyhood club was Liverpool and he'd only ever want to play for Liverpool or his home town team Athletico Madrid.
So yeah, he'd only ever pick Liverpool over United.

Oops, still Silva will take Liverpool over United, mainly for the Spanish players, he'd adjust easier at Liverpool.
Again you don't know this, although I admit this is likely, but it is very much possible that he wants to go to the champions of England to work with SAF
Money could be a factor who knows!!
I personally think he stays in spain now unless theres 1 or 2 negotiations at OT today ;) hehe
Liverpool (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/liverpool) have moved quickly to replace Xabi Alonso by signing the Roma (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/roma) and Italy midfielder Alberto Aquilani
Only hours after Alonso completed a medical at Real Madrid, sealing a £30m move to the La Liga club, his former employers announced they had captured Aquilani, subject to a medical. The fee is believed to be in the region of £18m
"Alberto is a very good player and I'm delighted we've reached agreement with Roma for his transfer," said the Liverpool manager Benítez. "He will travel to Merseyside later this week for a medical. Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/serieafootball) and the Champions League.
"He has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side."
It has been mooted for some time that Liverpool would move for Aquilani, who has just celebrated his 25th birthday, should they fail in their attempts to Alonso but the speed of the deal suggests he has been marked as the Spaniard's replacement at Anfield for some time.
Aquilani made his debut for Roma in 2003 under the club's then manager Fabio Capello. He has been capped by his country on 11 occasions and was part of the squad that competed at Euro2008.

Congrats on your new signing guys talk about quality (Alonso) for quality (Aqulani)
Say what you want about him as a player, but to be honest I do not think much about the comments he has made since he left.
He owes Rafa and Liverpool a whole lot.
An average player in an average team when we picked him up. Now regarded amongst the worlds best players.
If your talking about Alnoso he did say thank you to the fans for being so warm and thank you something something in this article ive just read xD.
Article included a picture of him looking rather happy meeting Van Nistelrooy(sp?) and Pepe
Also read antoher article about liverpool, its a guardian thing. They ahve been predicting the final positions of all the teams. So out of the big players they have prediced.
Arsenal - 5th
Chelsea - 2nd
Liverpool - 1st
Can only assume United will be predicted for third by them but our first is under the condition that we sign another forward and / or some cover at CB.

Hes a piece of turd a la Diouf. Not at that age anymore where hes got potential and clearly hasnt lived up to it, had enough chances to impress off the bench last year and failed miserably (El Zhar looked better IMO). I just hope if we sign Silva that Babel will **** off Liverpool and leave Anfield in peace :)
Diouf was an arse though. Babel seems to be a pretty decent guy, gangsta Dutch rapping aside.
Supposedly, he's done very well this pre-season in terms of attitude, seems to be getting his head down and working a lot more. Surely he's impressed Rafa enough in training last season that he's kept him this season.

I hope he gets played every single game this season , i think his pace is just immence. :) And he has potential , hes already shown it , he just needs more chances than what he got last season to build upon it.

I'm sorry but Babel has had enough chances to impress and has failed to do so on every given chance. I hope he proves me wrong this season and shows what he had (has) potential to be but I just don't see it even with a good pre season.
Good luck to him but I feel it's better getting cash while you can and going towards some better potential.

While I haven't seen him do much good either, we're ont the ones who watch him in training every week.
If Rafa, Sammy Lee, et al. see something there, least we can do is support the kid.

He had his chances. Apparently he played more minutes last season than Torres.

Riera is a good player but i find him to be inconsistent at times. Agree with the guy who said Babel should be stuck up front. Mainly if Torres is out, i think he could make a decent backup in that department. He does need to start delivering though.

Also agree about Babel, he's 22, he's past the potential age, he should be showing it now, but he's not, the reason he's not getting games is because when given the chances he's played crap.

Did any of you know that hes actually injured ?
Source (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8186102.stm)
Liverpool have signed Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani on a five-year contract after the Italian international passed a medical.
The 25-year-old has joined the Reds in a deal reportedly worth £20m.
Aquilani has not played since March due to an ankle injury and is only expected to be fully fit in around four to eight weeks time.
Liverpool said in a statement: "He will continue his rehabilitation under the guidance of our medical team."
Aquilani is Liverpool's second major summer signing after England right-back Glen Johnson joined from Portsmouth.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez targeted the Italian on Wednesday just hours after the Reds sold Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid for £30m.
"Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A and the Champions League," said Benitez.
Aquilani, has played 11 times for Italy and has been with Roma, the club he supported as a child, since he was 16, making his debut as an 18-year-old under now England boss Fabio Capello.
"Aquilani has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side," said Benitez.
The Italian had an operation on his ankle injury in May after struggling with injury problems which restricted him to just 14 appearances for Roma last season.
The Reds had also been linked with Wigan's Lee Catermole and Valencia's David Silva.
Last summer a move for then Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry - now at Manchester City following a £12m summer transfer - fell through after Benitez was unable to sell Alonso to raise the sufficient funds for the deal.
Good start.
And apparently he is out for 2-3 bloody months. What the he'll has Rafa done if that turns out to be true?

Rafa reveals Turner interest (http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_5480693,00.html)
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed his interest in signing Hull defender Michael Turner.
Benitez is in the market for a new central defender following the departure of Sami Hyypia and he has targeted a move for Turner.
Turner enjoyed a fine season with Hull last term and Benitez is believed to have been impressed by the former Brentford man.
Reports have suggested Hull have rejected a bid from Liverpool as they hold out for £12million for the towering defender.
Benitez has admitted he has talked with Tigers counterpart Phil Brown about Turner, but refused to divulge any more information on a possible transfer.
"I was talking with (Hull manager) Phil Brown, but I will not talk about figures. But maybe I was just talking to Phil about the weather," said Benitez.
Injuries
Benitez may step up his interest in Turner after Jamie Carragher joined Daniel Agger (back) and Martin Skrtel (hamstring) as injury concerns for next weekend's season opener at Tottenham with an ankle knock picked up against Atletico Madrid.
"We have two options. One is to bring in someone at the back and the other option is to keep working with the young players we have," added Benitez.
"We have three centre-backs to get fit and will need one more as a fourth. We have to decide what to do, but the one solution we can achieve is to work with the youngsters."
Good to see the big money we got is going on big players. :snicker

I like Turner, good solid defender surrounded by turd at Hull. For the right price (NOT 12 BLOODY MILL OR MORE) wouldnt be a bad 4th option to have.
Would he really be content to come and play fourth fiddle to Agger, Carra and Skittles though? Its a real shame we couldnt selfishly keep Sami a year longer xD.

While I do agree that it is pre season and you can't read TOO much into the results, it is worrying to see us outplayed in all our games bar one.
I would rather we flew through pre season, beating everyone and hit the ground running. As opposed to being out played at home and going into the first match with injury clouds over our three front line CB and main attacking threat, not too much our new 20m play maker.
