All the decisions were called correct, but one man off and 2 pens against in a game is abit unlucky to say the least.

Away goal was crucial, hopefully at Anfield Benfica can be overcome.

Torres worked so hard all game, getting kicked to shreds and really should have scored.
Yeah, their way of dealing with his was to simply kick him. I feel the guy that took him out that Babel pushed should have been a straight red, that was a stupid and dangerous tackle.

When Torres went 1 on 1 with the keeper I would have put all my money on him scoring.

I think we have enough in the tank to win next week. Is Aquaman cup tied as well as Maxi?

Sure seems like it. God knows why Rafa bought him for 20m when it looks like he can only play for 10 games a season.

Spurs have 4 massive games to play, United, Chelsea, Arsenal and City. I was backing them to get fourth, but now.... Now I fear City will get it.

City have United, Arsenal, Villa and Spurs to play.

Villa have Chelsea and City.

Liverpool just have Chelsea as their massive game.

From the bbc sport live feed...

Fernando Torres has some ice on his knee as he sits on the bench - but he certainly did not look happy to be coming off, and he appeared to be moving freely.

Who knows

Mate he wasn't injured.

He was moving fine, no limp and the disgust on his face, and Gerrards, and the fans booing, shows that he was fine.

Rafa hung himself today and if the board had any balls they would sack him now.

Ngog in 25 minutes managed to the give the ball away 5 times, successfully passing zero and missed 3 prime, golden, sitters.

TommyFewty
04-04-2010, 16:57
We actually looked a lot better once Nando went off because Ngog was willing to make runs whereas Torres just looked uninterested. 2 points dropped with the chances we had but a point at start of game wouldnt of been awful. Only one team from the top 10 have beaten Bham there this year so it wasnt exactly 3 points sewn up. Good to see us look positive and creating opportunities. Hopefully we can get them in the back of the net against Benfica.

Anyone else want to agree with my conspiracy theory that rafa made him put an icepack on his knee to deflect some of the flak?

TommyFewty
04-04-2010, 19:07
Rafa doesnt care what the media thinks of him. Didnt he take both Gezza and Torres off against Everton once? People might say if Torres was on he would have scores Ngogs chances but would he have made the runs? I love the man a whole lot but his work ethic is horrid when he isnt getting things on a plate. Saw multiple times where he was shoved off the ball with no willingness to try and get it back, just shrugs his shoulders and walks around. Just an unlucky result, Bham are a very good home side and we have won 4 away from home in prem, we havent got a sacred right to win every game because were Liverpool. Never noticed at Athletico how good Maxis defensive game is, works wonderfully for the team and really gets into tackles. If he was just a bit more clinical that game we would have had 3 points, same with Ngog.

Line-up tonight: Reina, Johnson, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Carragher(i assume hes LB), Lucas, Masch, Kuyt, Yoshi, Gerrard, Torres. Bench: Cav, Aqua, Degen, Nabil, Ngog, Ayala, Dani Pach. Would love Lucas to get freedom to roam like against Lille and think we will see it again, Pach to come off the bench and get another assist too. Yoshi wide left saddens me and no Aqua start but im more than happy with a Lucas free roam if hes unfit. Mon Lucaspool

im happy that liverpool won tonight, was a great game it just show what there made of when there on fire. but some how we lack in the premier league where something isnt right i mean if they dont win the 5 remaining games i give up, but it would be good to end this year with europa title & top 4 finish if not then i certainly give up.

what is so bad that no1 really cares what liverpool are doing no1 is talking about them & no1 is really wanting them to win the PL title. and why dont anyone rate liverpool !!! is it because of rafa or something else. i mean man utd sold ronaldo & they still have the quality to win games even if its without rooney and they are winning titles, so whats going wrong with liverpool.

Lack of confidence, morale, decent replacements on the bench. Rafa isn't a man to man manager, if a player is lacking confidence Rafa won't speak to the player he'll just walk on by and he let it get to the stage where the whole team lacked it.

Also, Gerrard and Torres just haven't seemed that bothered this season. Once they knew the PL was out of reach (5 games in) they both have just wandered the pitch and haven't had the same presence as they have had in past seasons.

I fear for the future if we don't get investment and at least 4-5 top class players this summer, especially a striker, Torres certainly isn't able to stay fit long enough to win us the league on his own.

Rafa Benitez is preparing to raid Real Madrid this summer to snap up battling midfielder Guti.

The 33 year old Spanish international is reportedly a target of several Premier League sides including Tottenham and Manchester City but Liverpool hope that there plethora of fellow Spaniards will give them the edge when it comes to persuading the player to try a new challenge.

After 15 successful years at the Bernabeu Guti is looking to try something new and has stated that he hopes that his club will look kindly on allowing him to leave on a nominal fee as he enters the final year of his Madrista contract.

'Right now there is no possibility that I will stay at Madrid,' Guti told Onda Madrid radio station. 'This will be my last Clasico [against Barcelona].
'I have a year left on my contract but I think we can reach an understanding. I am sure that they will understand that my best option is to go."

Liverpool are looking at bringing in new additions in the summer on a shoestring budget and Rafa believes he can win the race for the vastly experienced one club man. Guti is known to favour a move to the Premier League for one last big pay day and will be excited to team up with fellow Spaniards Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres and Albert Riera and will be more open to a move to Anfield if Rafa guides the club to a Champions League spot for next term.

Thought everyone might be interested.

We will be the best team again in Britain, the foundation are there, lets be honest Manchester United have had it, they are an aging team, Scholes, Giggs, Van Der Saar, Neville, they all need replacing, Fabio and Rafael the mutant ninja turtles at the back are weak defensively, rio ferdinands back is ****ed, hargreeves has been missing for a year now, Michael Owen is injured again with the same injury that has crippled his career, Berbatov is finding it hard to repay the £34 that was spent on him, Fletcher is a poor mans Mascherano, Tosic and Oberton don't even feature, Anderson is injured, ***** and wants first team football and wants a move. Park Ji Sould be Hung aint good enough for a top four team to be a regular starter, Ben foster has No confidence, have I missed anyone, oh yes Gibson whose only attribute is to shoot. They do have some decent players like Vidic but even he was thought a lesson by Torres and he seems to be intereted in going to either Barca or Madrid. Evra is decent as well and so is Valencia, Wayne Rooney is there only World Class player. If you look at our team on the other hand we have a young team, none of our squad is over 35, I think the Oldest is Krgyiakos who is 33 and not a first teamer. We have a very good spine to our team, Reina World Class Goalkeeper, Mascherano World Class Defensive Midfielder, Gerrard World Class attacking midfielder, Torres World class striker, to add to that we have Johnson, Agger, Skrtel who are all good, we have Maxi Rodriguez who was a great aquisition at 29 years of age he is at the peak of his career and we got him for zero money. Aquilani has the potential to be a world class player and will feature more and more now, Martin Kelly is going to be the next big thing. Benyoun is a great player to have in the squad, Babel is only 22 and is still to realise his potential, we have pacheco, nemeth, lauri dalle valle, thomas ince, david amoo, raheem stirling, ayala, ngog, bruna, san jose, saric all coming through and getting better. We do have our problems though and I am not afraid to name and shame the culprits, Riera I want him out after he betrayed us, we do not need a player like this at Anfield, Aurelio sorry too injury prone and should be released on a free contract in the summer, Insua defensivley poor, should not be a first team regular but a sqaud player, he lacks in the pace department and hazard highlighted this and so did benfica. Lucas also needs to be sold, sorry but studying recent games I believe this, he did not feature against Portsmouth and we ripped them apart 4-1, he did not feature against Sunderland and we destroyed them 3-0 and it should have been more, he also didn't feature versus Lille and we destroyed them 3-0, he returned to face ManScum and we got beaten 2-1, he then played versus Birmingham and we could only draw 1-1, these two results effectively derailed our chances of fourth. Kuyt - works hard and puts in a good honest genuine shift but so does the postman that delivers mail monday - friday,), it isn't good enough (please take into account that we have signed Jovanovic the Serb on a free contract and is arriving next season, this guy won the golden boot in belguim and also won belguim player of the year). Degen - not needed as we have Johnson and Kelly, playing this guy or keeping him will stutter Kellys progression so he should be sold to a german club at a relatively low cost. Darby - at 22 has not made the grade and his loan spell at Swindon should be made permenant when and if they are promoted to the championship, likewise the same should be done with spearing, at 21 he isn't good enough and his loan spell with Leicster City should be made permanent. Carragher - I am 50/50 here, not sure if it would be best to sell or keep, had a truly shocking season but loves the club and we know he can perform better, should only be a squad player or utility player next season. If we take all this into account and the fact that we have 17/18 very good players all we only really need to do is offload the players mentioned - recoup the money and invest it along with whatever transfer funds we have next season and we should have approx 50-60m to spend. Lucas 6m, Riera 6m, Kuyt 10, Carragher 4m, Degen 2m, Spearing & Darby combined 1m. Now you realise why we are not in a bad situation at all, ManUre are in far worse trouble, you compare our debts to theirs and this reinstates what I am saying, compare the fact that they might just win the Carling Cup and us the Uefa Cup and becomes unbearable for them.

Clearly this guy is a very optimistic soul. Bless him.

Ah i just saw one of my friends had joined it and it only took one click of the mouse, thought i might as well.
Ive since removed myself after getting like four messages from the group in about a day.

On the new kits, i dont like the logo for the new sponsers. Such a dull font.

The Reds XI in full is: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Mascherano, Aquilani, Babel, Maxi, Gerrard, Ngog. Subs: Cavalieri, Kuyt, Benayoun, Lucas, Degen, Pacheco, Ayala.

Quite OK with that. Get to see Aqua with a free roam probably and Agger gets another game at LB. Confident about today, 3-0, Aqua, Ngog and Gerrard.

Frustrating to say the least, Greening should have seen Red early on, bad error from the ref.

4th is long gone with City cruisuing in the other live game.

Totally dominated with nothing to show for it again. Desperately need another quality striker to partner Torres and help out when he is missing.

Atleast there was good news with the Reina contract, best keeper in the Premiership and a good foundation to try and build a better team on.

Just gotta look forward to next year now, write this one off as a blip and if Rafa does stay see what the circumstances are over the summer and what he can do next year. Dont see him having the cash he wants to spend after this year anyway.

JOSE MOURINHO (5/4)
Currently: Manager of Inter Milan but obviously, very vocally, unhappy in Italian football.

Pedigree: Won a fair bit but the most impressive are the Champions League with Porto, two Premier League titles with Chelsea, one Serie A with Inter Milan.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: Only three managers have won the Premier League in the last 15 years and only one of them is available. That surely makes Mourinho the best man for any Premier League manager's job, especially one where he gets to pit his wits directly against the other two, along with his arch-nemesis Carlo Ancelotti. His ego would certainly be attracted to the challenge of returning Liverpool to the top of the tree and becoming an instant hero to boot.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: Lack of money for both manager wages and player acquisitions, the suspicion that patience will bring either the Manchester United job and its almost guaranteed success or the Manchester City job with its massive challenge (and massive money), a probable absence from the Champions League and his oft-repeated admission that he wants to win La Liga to add to his Premier League and Serie A Titles.

MARTIN O'NEILL (9/2)
Currently: Manager of Aston Villa but only on a rolling contract.

Pedigree: Three SPL titles with Celtic and cup finals with Leicester and Aston Villa.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: An impressive record on a relatively smaller budget would appeal, as would his ability to recruit and improve young players like James Milner and Ashley Young. A lack of a long-term contract at Villa makes him cheaply available, and he would probably relish the opportunity to sit at the big table. If Liverpool were looking for the best available, upwardly-mobile manager currently in the Premier League, then they would look towards O'Neill. Tactically he would also be a good fit - a counter-attacking manager for a counter-attacking club.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: Little experience of dealing with big-name, big-ego footballers and there would be question marks about his ability to recruit foreign stars. He certainly lacks the pull of a Benitez or a Mourinho to La Liga or Serie A players, and has almost exclusively bought players from British football. Liverpool's foreign owners may not see O'Neill as quite sexy enough to attract investors.

KENNY DALGLISH (8/1)
Currently: Academy Ambassador.

Pedrigree: Four titles with Liverpool and Blackburn - the last in 1995.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: He loves the club, he knows the club, he's already at the club. He might not be a long-term option but his passion could be seen as the short-term solution until the Reds get back into the Champions League. The fans are already on his side and would give him the time they might not afford to an outsider, while if anyone can get the best out of the Academy graduates, it's Dalglish.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: His last managerial success was in 1995 and the Premier League has changed an awful lot in 15 years. At 59, would he have the energy needed to manage a big top-flight club? Would he have the contacts to bring in players from other leagues? Would he want to risk ruining his standing amongst Liverpool fans? It would be a curious step backwards and one that would hardly smack of ambition from Liverpool.

LAURENT BLANC (10/1)
Currently: Manager of Bordeaux.

Pedrigree: The French title in only his second season in management.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: He's young, presumably ambitious and is used to working within a budget at Bordeaux. His standing in world football would give Liverpool access to some of France's best young players and it would certainly be considered a coup to recruit a man some are earmarking for the United job.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: With less than three years of managerial experience, is he ready to manage one of the biggest clubs in world football and deal with all the hoop-la that surrounds it? He may choose - or Liverpool may choose - to give him longer to find his feet in French football, by which time United could decide to take a gamble on a man who is clearly respected at Old Trafford.

OSWALDO DE OLIVIERA (12/1)
Currently: Manager of Japanese side Kashimi Antlers.

Pedrigree: One Brazilian title and three successive J-League trophies.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: We're guessing he would be relatively cheap - jumping at the chance to manage in Europe for the first time in his career. We won't pretend we know anything about his personality or tactics, but we're assuming he can't be an absolute chump if he's won three J-League titles.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: A lack of standing in European football, the very real possibility of making yourselves a massive laughing stock by replacing a Champions League winner with an unknown. Looking towards Japan worked for Arsenal with Arsene Wenger, but what are the chances of that happening again? It's hardly like English football and Brazilians have ever been an easy fit.

ROY HODGSON (12/1)
Currently: Manager of a Fulham side punching above their weight.

Pedrigree: Titles in Sweden and Denmark, Inter in the UEFA Cup final and Fulham in the Europa last four.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: A master of organisation, Hodgson would certainly get the best possible out of Liverpool without spending a vast amount of money. He also has the likeability factor because nobody dislikes Woy except Blackburn fans with long memories. He's managed at Inter Milan so he certainly wouldn't be fazed by the pressure, and he's made it clear he doesn't see himself at Fulham forever. If Liverpool are looking for a safe pair of hands, they could do an awful lot worse.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: Appointing a 62-year-old manager does not emit a clear signal in terms of long-term planning, while - like O'Neill - he would lack the X Factor. He's likeable but hardly dynamic. Should one of the biggest clubs in the world be managed by a likeable grandad?

MARK HUGHES (12/1)
Currently: Out of work.

Pedrigree: Won bugger all as a manager.

Why He Will Be Liverpool Manager: He's the only one on this list currently available and he would need absolutely no persuasion to join a Big Four club after being ousted from Manchester City. He's got youth on his side and could probably persuade some of City's fringe players (Ireland, Wright-Phillips, Richards) to jump ship for the right price. He did have a pop at playing entertaining football at City, even if it didn't always work.

Why He Won't Be Liverpool Manager: Most remain unconvinced that he can manage at a big club under severe external and internal pressure. If he could not get City into the top four with unlimited funds, what chance has he got at Liverpool? And remember, this is a man who thinks Joleon Lescott is worth £20-odd million.

THE REST
Hiddink, Klinsmann, McLeish 16/1, Schuster 20/1.

Just to add to the spice of the good news.

Would take Mourinho as our manager in a heart beat, I love his press conferences, now the Yanks have put up Liverpool for sale hopefully in the next month we can have a serious and rich buyer.

I'd only take O'Neil if he brought Milner with him. But he won't leave Villa, he's built that team from scratch and he's fighting for the same place as Liverpool, why would he leave?

Agreed. But given the incompetence of our medical staff I can't say I am surprised. They seem to crock everyone. Look at Kewell, fcked the entire time he was at Liverpool, goes to Gala and has been great since.

Gerrard, Torres, Agger, Baros, Cisse, Owen.

There seems to be a constant string of on going injury problems concerning key players.

Guess that comes from a lack of depth over the last 2 decades and the managers always rushing back players before they are 110% fit again.

Hate Monday night games. Just feels weird and out of place. Cant wait till this season is over, hopefully ending in a wonderful Hamburg night. Wish Rafa would kust go "Bugger it, 4th is out of the way so give a bit of the youth a chance" but we need 7th i suppose. Wouldnt mind seeing Reina, Kelly(GJ)-Kyrgi-Carra-Agger, Nabil-Lucas-Aqua-Maxi, Babel-Ngog. Would mean a 442 which i dont see happening in the 1st place but would be nice to see if it worked. As long as Ngog isnt alone up top again im not really bothered, just looks so isolated.

Never expected those results for the top 3.

Bad news on Torres, gutted for the lad.

It pains me to say it but I dont want the reds beating Chelsea to help Utd to title 19, we would never hear the end of it! We have nothing riding on the result so if the title has to go somewhere other than Anfield, Stamford Bridge it is this season hopefully.

Just goes to show how far we have fallen from last year.

Though in saying that Reina is the leading clean sheet holder at the moment. He HAS to be in ahead of Casillas at the World Cup and our home record for the last few months reads:

Played 10, won 9 draw 1 lost 0.

All I will say is that Mancini has actually admitted today we are interested in acquiring his services in the summer and £50M is what we have put aside. Mancini went on to say that he regards Torres as a player who sits with Tevez, Rooney, Messi, Ibrahimovic & Ronaldo as the best players in Europe. The article then speculates how City would pay Torres £200K a week.

The article then speculates how City would pay Torres £200K a week.

http://www.aggbot.com/docs/link.php?id=9210717&f=1&c=45

Man this is getting annoying.

Torres has said week after week after week after god dam ********** week that he isn't interested in any other club. He doesn't care about money, he earns $130k now plus his sponorship deals, $200k wouldn't mean eff all to him.

He has said so many times he is staying at Liverpool, the CLUB have said he isn't gonig anywhere.

Shame the thick as sh** media can't understand that.

Well... Ngog proved he is a bag of **** last night. Not once he managed to control the ball, his first touch is none existent. Babel also proved he needs to go, all he did when he came on was run into the Madrid players and lose the ball, Babel... You're not Messi, pass the ****ing ball.

If we can't get a buyer for Liverpool and some transfer funds before the end of the season, next season could be just as worse as this one. Rafa also needs to go, his time is up at Liverpool, he has no excuses, all but 2 of the Liverpool squad are his signings.

It's his positional awareness.

He doesn't have a clue where to stand, especially when a player makes a run from the far post.

Much as I love Rafa... having heard Ferguson recently state he has no intention of retiring, coupled with Mourinho wanting a Premiership return..

New owners + Mourinho = a wonderful situation for Liverpool FC.

Benitez is getting too frustrated, and Juventus & Real Madrid desperately want him, so he may as well go there for his own fresh challenge.

Think people are forgetting the fact that we dont have new owners yet. Theres actually no promise we will be getting any either coupled in with they might just be here to keep the club running and not giving him an open chequebook which he likes. We arent exactly at a great crossroads with the club, if he goes anywhere it will be Real probably. Free money and a new challenge >>> potential yanks staying.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres fears playing in the Barclays Premier League could damage his health for life. The 26-year-old, in his third season at Anfield following a move from Atletico Madrid, is currently sidelined with a knee surgery and battling to be fit to represent Spain at the World Cup."The Premier League is such a tough competition and I have always admired this championship and the players who are here," he is quoted as saying in the News Of The World."This is my third season and I'm still amazed to see (Steven) Gerrard, (Wayne) Rooney and (Frank) Lampard, players who have been here a long time, still playing at such a high level and with such impressive rhythm because the English league really wears down a player."I just can't imagine what state I'll be in within five or six years if I continue to play here - it could easily give me problems when I stop playing. The physical level is superior to all other countries."http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news

Branislav was RB in the TOTY with Paddy LB. As good as GJ has been Ivanovic has been quality and not been injured as much. We all knew the quality of Reina but no-one really knew how good Hart would be. Hes proven how good he is at Bham, definitely suprise of the season alongside Milners CM performances. Reina is better but its probably cos Harts burst onto the scene at a lesser club and put in probably more standout performances than Reina. Reina and Cech are tied on 15 i think actually. The CM is a bit baffling, dont compare Fletcher with Lampy Lamps though in terms of assists and goals cos hes not there for that, same with Masch. He brings a phenomenal workrate and passion for Utd, improved drastically over the past year and a half and put in some sterling performances. PFA might be recognising improvement over the season too, not just stats as in goals/assists. Also when the votes where taken Fletch was in top form whereas Lamps was just OK, Lamps really stepped it up in the past 2-3 months.

My TOTY would be:

Reina
Branislav Dann Dunne Cole
Valencia Milner Cesc Malouda
Rooney Droggles

Cole/Paddy pretty much just who the person prefers, i prefer Cole just cos he has a couple more goals (one against Sunders was awesome). Malouda LM instead of sticking Milner out there cos he has been immense this season. No Lamps/Fletcher which is harsh cos they have been good but other 2 have stepped up immensely, Cesc in terms of getting onto the ball and running at defences a bit more. Dann over Verm because Bhams defensive record has been brilliant, Danns just let down by speed but still been brilliant and Verms positioning at times is a little suspect. Spose Milner wide right and Lamps/Fletch if you want to but ah well.

Enjoyed the article

In a week when awards are being handed out, nervous acceptance speeches prepared and video montages played to dubious soundtracks, it is damning that the only honour bestowed upon Alberto Aquilani is that of "worst signing of the season". Patience may be a virtue, but when the cost is £17 million it goes out of the window.

Yet there was a moment, just a moment, during Liverpool's ultimately emphatic win over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday where, if you squinted, you might have mistaken Rafael Benitez's 2010 side for the previous season's vintage. And to do so was to mistake the confident, strutting Italian spraying passes in the centre of the pitch for the man who previously occupied the position - Xabi Alonso.

Of course the league table will quickly extinguish such comparisons. Liverpool could well end the season as much as 24 points short of the 86 they amassed in 2008-09, and are not yet assured of seventh place and Europa League qualification. Alonso's departure is still held up as the main reason for the side's decline. But in their first Premier League away win of 2010 there were signs that the season's "worst" signing could yet turn into a pretty good one.

Benitez himself spoke earlier this week about his pleasure at seeing Aquilani flourish in an advanced midfield role, and his relationship with skipper Steven Gerrard looks to be developing. There may have been an element of fortune in both, but Aquilani picked up assists for each of the England man's goals, and later created another for Maxi Rodriguez with an expansive, Alonso-esque pass.

Promise | But Liverpool need more from Aquilani

But despite the promise, it must be pointed out that Sunday was just the second time the former Roma man has managed to complete 90 minutes in the league this season. And the other time was against Portsmouth, another side who will end this season relegated. Most expect Lucas Leiva - who emerged from the bench to grab an assist of his own at Turf Moor - to regain his place for the visit of Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final on Thursday.

Whether Benitez fully trusts Aquilani in such games, or whether the Italian's fitness is still an issue, is unclear. But the statistics do not lie: Arsenal, Everton, Manchester United, Benfica and Manchester City have all been faced without him, and he is yet to start three games in succession. With a home game against Chelsea to follow the Atletico test, it is a big week for Liverpool, and for Aquilani.

It is always hard for any player to come from a foreign league and adapt immediately to the cut and thrust of what, this season at least, has turned out to be an ultra-competitive Premier League. To do so after being deprived of a pre-season, when debilitated by a series of knocks and illnesses, and in a side desperately struggling for consistency, is even tougher.

And in truth, Aquilani's overall performances since his return from injury at the back-end of last year have been ok. It is just that Liverpool supporters have spent too much of the season frustrated with 'ok'. Maybe expectations are too high, but still more is expected.

Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are two games that Liverpool simply have to win. The Spaniards' single-goal advantage, and the Reds' failure to obtain an away goal, mean the likelihood is that a 2-0 win will be required on Thursday, whilst - ignoring the fanciful talk of an anti-Manchester United conspiracy - Carlo Ancelotti's men must be vanquished in order to keep alive any hope of pinching fourth place come the season's end.

Fans of Lucas - and they are growing in number - will point to influential performances against Lille and Benfica recently as justification for the Brazilian's inclusion. But with the stakes so high it may just be that Benitez, at times unfairly accused of protectionism, opts to go on the offensive. And that surely means Aquilani has to start.

With the Italian and Gerrard working in tandem, Liverpool's attacking threat swiftly multiplies. Both can comfortably switch position, alternating between partnering Javier Mascherano in the centre of midfield, and assisting the lone striker - be that Dirk Kuyt, David Ngog or Ryan Babel.

Gerrard spoke this week of his delight at playing alongside "quality footballers" and cited the impressive Maxi Rodriguez as an example. Maxi is ineligible to play in the Europa League, but Aquilani falls into that category. Lucas, for all his merits, does not pass the ball with the pace or variation of the Italian. His role, whether he likes it or not, is primarily to destroy.

Of course Benitez is a fan. His faith in the 23-year-old has been unwavering even if the Kop's has not been. He clearly rates the former Gremio man's attitude, work-rate and positional play, and few could argue that Lucas has not improved this season.

But there must surely come a time when the Liverpool manager must trust his £17 million acquisition against the big boys.

And where better to start than in this most pivotal of weeks?

Xelis

 Aquilani's second assist for Gerrard was a miss-control that Gerrard ran up to and thumped.

I think Aqua and Maxi are both still finding their feet and I feel, well hope, that they are just adjusting and once the next season starts we will finally have a team firing on more than 2 cylinders, if Aqua and Torres can stay fit.

Shelvey discussing move to Merseyside

Charlton have given Premier League side Liverpool permission to speak to 18-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey about a transfer, the Addicks confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool will pay an initial £1.7m for the England youth international, with further potential payments depending on domestic and international appearances.

Shelvey travelled to Merseyside on Tuesday to agree personal terms and undergo a medical, the results of which won't be known until Wednesday.

As part of the potential transfer, the two clubs are also in talks to develop a strategic partnership involving the development of players in both directions.

Shelvey became Charlton's youngest debutant when he made his first-team bow against Barnsley at Oakwell in April 2008, aged just 16 years and 59 days. He is also the club's youngest FA Cup and league goalscorer.

The Romford-born attacker has made 48 appearances and scored eight times for the Addicks, including four goals in the current campaign.

Good to see us going after a bit of youth. Charlton fans arent happy with the little amount of starts hes got apparently and for that cheap hes worth a punt.

Well.. A guy puts on a rubber glove, lubes up his finger and......

A medical involves checking the player's physical capabilities to play football for the club.
Things such as O2 intake, weight, height, injury check ups, blood pressure, blood-tests, sight tests, reactions etc are tested.
The doctor then evaluates the result and tells the club that the player is fit to play for the club, or that he's unfit to play and/or has a lingering injury that will cause problems.
I believe there's a minimum requirement for O2 intake, although I'm not 100% sure on that.

Cheers boys

The team in full: Reina, Mascherano, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Lucas, Aquilani, Babel, Benayoun, Gerrard, Kuyt. Subs: Cavalieri, Kyrgiakos, Pacheco, Degen, El Zhar, Ayala, Ngog.

So thats Javier RB and Johnson LB. Very attacking line-up which is positive. Confident about tonight, reckon Anfield will be rocking and we will win 3-1 or 2-0.

Oh no Ngog is on the bench. Meaning that should we be needing a goal he will probably send that useless sack on instead of Pacheco :/

Aquilani has been good. Sure he has misplaced a pass here and there but he looks like he is full of energy.
Think we need to be wary of them on the counter though. One lapse in concentration and things could go so wrong.

Knew there was a reason why i used to stop coming into this thread a while ago. Bloody kneejerk reactions after a loss. Glen Johnson out when he has been our most consistent attacking threat all season? Player who last season was brilliant in a poor Pompy side and has stepped it up when asked? And the fact he made some brilliant last ditch tackles after his mistake being ignored? Yes he isnt as stable as Arby but if you genuinely cant see why hes here then your a moron. If our team was anywhere near as defensively stable in the CB/LB department throughout the season then he wouldnt have been shown up. Ignore the POOR positioning on Agger/Carras for marking Forlan too btw if you like.

Then get rid of Kuyt who has constantly scored vital important goals since his time here (Y) For our budget theres not a RW i would prefer on form than him. If he werent for our shocking attacking display this season then he would shine. May as well flog Gerrard, Riera, Yoshi, Aqua, Babel and Maxi if were making judgements on this year. If your expecting Kuyt to pull something magical out his *** then youve been watching the wrong player for his time here. Gets in brilliant positions, work rate thats unprecedented, smart footballing brain for movement out wide and he clearly has a lot of passion in his play. Not the most technically gifted but hes given more than enough as a converted ST on the RW. I love the guy, after Nando and Gerrard he is vital to our attacking play and has been since he has been here.

Our team has been dire all season, only Reina, Masch(after he got over flirting with Barca), Carra (last 4 months), Johnson, Lucas (when told to roam) and Torres (when fit obv) can be at least content with there performances this year. Years like this happen, didnt see you wanting him gone when we were 2nd last season. Sing when your winning and all that. Face it, we arent a top 2 club, we did overachieve and Rafa did brilliantly to get it out of certain players. This year has been an underachievement, players and fans know that. Just the constant Rafa bashing in this thread is nigh on unbelievable. He is not exempt from criticism but everything is pinned on him for some reason. Even when the players accept they have been below par its still somehow Rafas fault cos hes "lost the team" which has backed him all year and performed for him last year cos they hate him obv. Bad year, we move on, fair play if its the same scenario and were battling for 7th undeservedly with the teams around staying the same and negative tactics by Rafa then by all means let him leave but for what he has done for the club up to this point, the natural progression season on season is there to see. Another year of awfulness and i will be behind the "Rafa out" bandwagon but for now let him have another year. Sorry about the essay, just venting.

Tom.

18 losses this season.
Out of CL at the first hurddle.
Bundled out AT HOME in the Europa League.
Squad showen be incredibly weak.
Rafa continuing with his mind fck subs.
7th in the league, likely to miss out on the CL.

I would say the knee jerk reaction rubbish ran it's course a good 6 months ago.

Time for a new argument my friend.

Kneejerk reactions on good players getting slated. Especially GJ who has been brilliant this year for us. Its been a bad season, that is all that shows, these happen in a managers career. If you seriously cant look past the progression our team has had since hes been here cos of one admittedly horrid season then thats just stupid. Its ok when were overachieving and he is up in 2nd in the league but when we have a dip, a big one, then the fans just see Mourinho wanting a move and go "Him out JM in sorted, leagues ours" when its clearly not that simple. I can understand the frustration, negative tactics at home, the sketchy subs, unwillingness to attack when teams are there for taking etc but if you dont wanna give a manager of his calibre at least 1 more season for what he has given the club then your just harsh.

Kopkiwi
04-30-2010, 11:52
GJ has been brilliant in ATTACK. Defence wise though, he has been a liability. To be honest I wouldn't mind seeing him thrown at RW. He has pace, can go passed his man, can score. Why isn't he considered a better option than Kuyt?

Whom lets face it, other than running a lot, offers nothing.

Xelis
04-30-2010, 16:26
My knee isn't jerking, I've wanted Rafa out for a long time.

There is a knee jerk reaction to GJ though, he's a good player, poor defensively, but there are signs of improvement. Kop makes a very good point, Johnson as a Right Winger would be very interesting, attacking wise he's probably the best RB there is, around the opposition's box he is top class. Hell, if you're complaining about GJ, what about Gerrard? I swear he was dragged off the pitch after 15 mins cause I never saw him after that.

I still don't understand Kop's rant towards Kuyt, sorry man, he's a good player, nt world class but he's miles better than a lot of our team.

Babel, I'll give him credit for showing heart and spirit, but his decision making on the ball is atrocious, his passing was terrible. He needs to go, I'm way past done waiting for him to show his 'potential'.

Did you see our bench last night? **** me that couldn't support a league 2 team nevermind a Premiership team.
