SOURCE (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=764215&sec=england&cc=5901)
Sprained ankle rules Rooney out for up to four weeks
Wayne Rooney is expected to be out for two to four weeks after spraining his ankle in the closing moments of Manchester United's 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich.
Wayne Rooney had scored the opener against Bayern Munich after 64 seconds
Rooney turned over on his right ankle in the build-up to Bayern Munich's injury-time goal and the England striker now faces up to a month on the sidelines, though he will face a scan to discover the extent of the injury. He is certain to miss league matches against Chelsea and Blackburn, as well as the second leg against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford next week.
But depending on Rooney's period of rehabilitation, he could miss the home clash with Spurs, the Manchester derby against Roberto Mancini's Manchester City and both legs of the Champions League semi-final should United overcome their first leg deficit.
Rooney is United's leading goalscorer this season with 34 goals, almost three times as many as second highest scorer Dimitar Berbatov, and Sir Alex Ferguson will now be heavily reliant on the Bulgarian striker to lead United's line - with youngsters Mame Biram Diouf and Federico Macheda the club's only other forward options.
England coach Fabio Capello will have been morw worried than most at the extent of Rooney's injury, given how vital the striker is to the nation's chances at the World Cup..
He said: "I will speak to him on Wednesday or Thursday morning. I was not happy, but I'm not happy whenever any England players get injured. It is too early to say how badly he is injured. We need to wait for a scan.''

Rooney out for 2-3 weeks
Sir Alex Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to be out for two to three weeks.
The manager gave this estimate to MUTV in an exclusive interview, prior to Good Friday's press conference. He also said, with reference to the World Cup, "The nation can stop praying now!"
At the media briefing itself, Sir Alex said that "everyone else is okay". Not only that, but long-term absentees John O'Shea and Owen Hargreaves have been training well enough to be considered for substitute berths against Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
More news from the press conference will follow later. The video will be available to view on MUTV Online from Friday afternoon (BST).

What about anderson? is he still injured? I would take him and drop carrick as he has been playing poor lately.

Andersons season is over! :( Yeh Carrick was awful midweek, I wouldn't play him tomorrow, start with Giggs and Fletcher in midfield like last year but with Park just in front of them.
...I'm a bit nervous now, but we must believe!
COME ON UNITED!!!
EDIT: I hope we win in controversial fashion today after the game at Stamford Bridge, I hope someone drags Malouda to the ground in the box and no pen, Drogba to be clean through on goal, offside flag goes up wrongly, we get a dodgey freekick, then Rooney can drag Alex to the floor as the ball goes into the bottom corner
Can you tell i'm a bit bitter about that game still?

Even if we win the race wouldn't be decided yet. Same if Chelsea win. The winner will get a nice boost but both still have some tricky away fixtures. A draw would give Arsenal another sniff. Getting a bit nervous here ...

I think if Chelsea win, it's still wide open but they have a slight advantage. If we win, I think we're very high favourites to win it. A draw and it'll be wide open for both teams AND Arsenal.

A controversial win would be good, and unlike last time fans of other teams will be quick to voice their opinions (bitterness) about our win. Continuing the trend to moan when we have luck and not care when it goes against us.

Wtf, both Scholes AND Giggs? Just f*cking great, play the two players that are most likely to lose the ball and have a friggin' heart attack on the f*cking pitch and don't play Nani who's been good recently. Ugh.

The Berba one wasn't a pen for me, the Park one on the other hand...
Lol, this is what happens when you play Giggs & Scholes in midfield against opposition that don't give them ANY time on the ball, meaning they're completely useless at their age.
Bring on Nani for Giggs and Carrick for Scholes and let's try something different than just passing it to Valencia and hope he whips in a good cross.

04-03-2010, 13:41
Drab, uninspiring and pretty much **** all round.
Can't complain about our two bookings, but Terry fouled Berbatov and then kicked the ball away and got nothing. Thought Park should have got a penalty.
I think Nani should come on now, and with Scholes already booked I can see him getting sent off so maybe he should be taken off. Move Giggs centre and maybe he'll play a bit better otherwise he'll be replaced by Carrick, who will have to get his finger out after the last few games.
We don't deserve anything from this game so far, hopefully the hairdryer will waken them up.

That is just typical of all fans, only notice the decisions that go in United's favour, there is never any mention of decisions that go against United.
That Drogba goal was clearly offside. Poor decision from the linesman.

I dont care about your penalty shouts. There was only one penalty to park. The "hand ball" from chelsea in the area wasn't there. His arms was close to his body and it hit his shoulder more than anything.
No idea what other penalty you are talking about. I watched the whole match.

Not sure if your being serious but...
Yes is the answer. This past 3-4 seasons there have been countless times when the odds are looking slim. When we are maybe 2-0 down in a match or playing with 10 men. When we are destroyed in a match or down from the first leg in a match. I always believe we can pull through and we do.
I remember all those 'United' supporters in school during the 04-05 and 05-06 seasons who were like "we're finished" or "United are dead". How foolish they were back then.
Chelsea still have Liverpool away who are chasing 4th spot and it won't be secured by the time they play.

This is a difficult one to stomach though. Two dire performances on the bounce that threaten to ruin an entire season. United have looked very poor recently, uninspired, without energy, drive ... We have to win all the remaining games including a trip to City while hoping Chelsea drop 3 or more points (it's not looking good for the goal difference, especially if you look at some of the cannon fodder Chelsea have at home). Most of it is without Rooney as well. We need a good display at home against Bayern as well.
I'd love to have faith in the team and all but my head says it's all over. United aren't going to win all the remaining games and Chelsea aren't going to drop a shed load of points either. It'll be a close race to the end but ultimately a very frustrating one for us. We have a better chance of getting to the CL final but the league is always the main trophy. It would be n19 as well and an unprecedented 4th in a row. I can't help but feel terribly disappointed.

Well, it's just a bit of a biased opinion don't you think? I mean look at all those times when when the decision goes your way and it shouldn't. There was that time where Drogba got blocked on the half way line, clearly he'd have scored but no one was even sent off. All they got was a free kick.

Lol! One of my mates is a Liverpool fan and he says it was outside the area too.
I look at it it differently. It started outside the area (shirt pulling) but continued into it and then he went down.Which to me is fair enough. If the Liverpool player wants to invite a penalty for trying to cheat., let him.

Yeh the 2nd article was sooo impartial...
The Valencia pen was a pen, I even posted a statute from Fifa law to prove it was after the game.
Ok if you don't think that was a pen what about the Bellamy pen with Rafael, where there was contact outside the area then he ran into the box and flopped to the ground?
For the Carrick one, I remember Fletcher fairly tackling Fabregas (and getting sent off) just after that, when Arsenal were around 3-0 down (I forget)...just because that didn't ignite a comeback no one cares about it
EDIT: Oh yeh, what did you think of the pen against United for Pompey earlier in season, it was the slightest of shirt pulls from Vidic, You never see them given, and I havn't seen any been given since.
Just a point
Valencia never dived against us. Rafa is a plonker in the media. It wasnt a peno cos it was outside the area but Luis never dived against us, was a blatant foul.
Actually according to the FIFA rules if the players shirt is tugged from outside the box and he falls over inside the box then the referee must award a Penalty.

Is that a question?
If so, then yes, I am a Leeds fan.
Greatest team ever on their day. When they really want it. Pure poetry in motion to watch. Their fluidity of movement is like a raindrop dancing on a Lotus leaf. At times reminiscent of the great Brazil teams.
Well at least one team with Manchester in there name won today. Doing the goods for Manchester, as always.
Will you ever listen? Ive told you about 10 times Manchester United are not from Manchester, were from and based in Salford.

The metropolitan police or what you english call them want's "high profile" games to be early so they can control the crowd better. I've have a distinct memory of reading that somewhere.
the met police is london, but yes, that is why they do it, its just policing issues. and also sky. lunchtime kick off they can show it on tv, 3 o clock ? can't can they. you would be very hard pressed to find a fixture between teh top two of the top 4 in the last few years that has kicked of at 3 o clock on a saturday.

Leeds the greatest ever team on there day? Bloody hell there day only comes round once every couple of FA Cup matches. Learn how to get out of League One before comparing your team with probably the most beautiful and technically gifted national team ever to grace the game. Beckford and Pele, i knew who id rather have, Zizinho and Snodgrass hmmm, Romario and Kilkenny 8)

What are you talking about Tommy?
Leeds are the most gifted and talented team in the history of all football, their football makes Barcelona and Arsenals style of football look amateur and pathetic.
They are in the top half of the most superior league in the world...League 1.
Players like Beckford and Snodgrass are rated at atleast £100 million each and both willwin the Ballon dor some time in their career.

If the season started since after the Utd game you would be 19th. Few off days is a bit of an understament, you have lost 8 in the league and your last game you got smashed by Charlie Austins barmy army. Dont see where you can compare your League One team to the most beautiful national team. Pure poetry in motion being getting away with a 1-0 away at OT when you got dominated all game. Enjoy League One.

Right, where do i start on the crap that was saturday afternoon?
right, wrong line up......Obvs losing rooney was a MASSIVE blow, but we should not of been playing ALL our old geezers. Team did look leggy in the 1st half, no pace in that team on saturday. Rafa isnt injured, why is slow dead neville starting ahead of him? Scholes was a liablilty and as much as i dont like Carrick atm, he shouldve started. Park had a bad game, but we didnt know that in hindsight, i wouldve lilke to see NANI and Valencia start the game.
We played the tried and trusted 4,5,1 which didnt work as we lost the midfield, didnt push up or pressure them enough, 2 strikers as Berba drops WAY too deep shouldve suffieced.
Yes the trip on park was a pen, yes gary shoulder barging anelka was a pen, YES DROGBAS GOAL WAS A MILE OFFSIDE and yes Kiko handballed the ball into the net.
Malouda who imo, is average as heck shouldve been stopped by valencia then neveille before joe coles lucky flick.
Can we still do it???? Without wazza, imma say NO. I doubt we'll score more than bayern on weds, i hope im right, but berba as good as his touch is etc, aint the one for me. Case in point, the volley he had in the 93rd min, he shouldve buried that FFS.
Chelski have to go away to spurs and liverpool. But its theres to lose now.
To sum up, i think we have done brillinat this seaosn to still be in a shout of the league and europe with such a poor squad, if rooney hadnt discovered he was alan shearer all of a sudden fook knows where we would be! We've lost 7 games, i remember when 4 games was the maxium you could lose in season! What a crazy league its been.

It's not a poor squad, we're just missing someone really special in midfield. Goalkeeper's great, I think we can all agree the defense is immense even though rightback is a weak position. The wide positions are fine as well with Valencia who, despite a few weaker performances, has been very good and Nani who's been improving. Maybe a man short in the attack as Berba as a lone striker doesn't really work when Rooney's out and Owen is unreliable. Macheda to play a bigger role next season?
And then there's midfield. Carrick, found out time and time again against the big sides. Hargreaves is a mystery. Anderson, even if he's fit again it seems no one really knows what his role should be. Scholes is old. Imo Fletch is our best man in the middle, but we lack a world class midfielder with a creative spark. I'm disappointed we didn't get Sneijder in the Ronaldo deal. I think we would've been much stronger with him. I feel if we sort out that midfield we'll be there or thereabouts again next season.

That's why I said again. This season has been a weird one. We can still realistically win the league after 7 losses. I don't expect next season to be like that, so we'll need a stronger side. I also think we'll fail to win the CL, either by getting knocked out this Wednesday or maybe getting a football lesson again in the final by Barça if both teams get there. I think that one world class midfielder could make a huge difference.
wow i found out yesterday that Man U was actually formed by a Scouser called Frederick Attock lol the irony
I don't think our squad is bad, but it is worse than it's been in a few years. All we really need imo is a creative midfielder... and getting rid of Giggs/Scholes/Neville.
I think that should be our main priority in the summer, and also getting another defender in cause I doubt Rio will play more than half the season next year and I'm not entirely sure about Smalling, seems poo whenever I've seen him.
I don't think we have a horrible squad, just not as good as it used to be... not as much depth. We need to spend for next season because imo, Chelsea will spend big this summer and we need to keep up. Not saying we need to spend big, but we need to spend a bit atleast and spend it wisely.

Eh? Rio has been poor at times this season but the title winning seasons he was an absolutely world class defender. It'll all depend on his back injury. If that doesn't give him too many problems he can return to his best and play on that level for a few more years.
And even with all the defensive worries this season, we still have the best defensive record in the league.

didn't he spit on tevez? when tevez was on united... the match where drogba smacked vidic...
He cheated on his wife, with another players wife... that is enough for me... but the spitting thing (just a memory from a highlight i saw a while ago, not sure if its true) if it was true, would be the most disgraceful thing IMO.
What does rooney do that is disgraceful? he play aggressive, and sometime make a bad move on the pitch (portugal red card) but nothing that seems intentional.

To be honest, this doesn't come from an opposing fans perspective but from a neutral point of view. I reckon you will struggle, especially with Robben in the team.

Actually I can see this one being a 0-0 draw.
We MAY be able to shut out Robben and Ribery because we are at home but I really don't see us scoring.
I think we'll start 4-5-1 with Berbatov up front, Nani and Valenica on the wings and Scholes/Giggs, Carrick and Fletcher in midfield. I'd prefer it if we started 4-4-2 with Macheda up front with Berbatov and just go gung-ho but it will be cautious for the first half.
Against Chelsea we were ***** first half and I think not making changes at half time cost us the match. Fair enough the offside goal screwed us over because we had a bit of dominating possession before that and we were creating half-cut chances.
It's games like Chelsea I would just think '**** it, we need at least a draw so just make the subs now and go for it' but that's probably why I'm sitting watching TV and not one of the most decorated managers in football. :(

I think you're being a bit pessimistic after the recent setbacks. We're not as bad as the Bayern and Chelsea matches made us look. We had a terrible time against both teams. We've not suddenly become a worse side. Yes we lost a lot of quality with Rooney, but that's not the problem. Let's not forget we were much worse than we should've been in Munich and Rooney was on the field for 90 minutes.
If we manage to get going again, we're a better side than Bayern. They have more individual class at the moment, especially with Rooney out. We all know that can make the difference in the Champions League, but we'll just have to win as a team. I think the lads will be determined to bounce back. For some reason they weren't against Chelsea, but I don't think that'll happen again.
We may well go out, but I'm expecting a good effort at least.
