I really hope we win the champons league and we could proudly (maybe) say we beat the French, English, Italian and Spanish champions. That would be awesome!

I don't think we will though. I think we may slip up somewhere. Us v Chelea = a coin toss. The winner of that SHOULD .. SHOULD beat Inter then Barca or Madrid? ... I don't know who would win that.

Hargreaves set for shock call to solve United defensive crisis

Manchester United's defensive injury crisis is so severe that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering recalling Owen Hargreaves to his squad to face Bolton as an emergency right back.

With Rafael and John O'Shea joining Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on the sidelines, Jonny Evans doubtful and Gary Neville now retired, Ferguson could turn to a player who has managed just six minutes of first-team football in two-and-a-half years.

Hargreaves has trained all week after lengthy treatment in Germany and was withdrawn from a reserve game against Sunderland on Thursday.

The injury-plagued midfielder, 30, has battled to overcome chronic knee trouble since signing from Bayern Munich for £17million in 2007 and his last appearance for United against Wolves in November was cut short after only five minutes due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, the Manchester derby will kick off FA Cup semi-final weekend on April 16, the FA have confirmed, with City playing United at 5.15pm at Wembley. The match will be live on ITV1.

The tie between Bolton and Stoke will be the following day, kick-off 4pm, and be broadcast by ESPN.

Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1367773/Hargreaves-set-shock-solve-United-defensive-crisis.html?ito=feeds-newsxml)

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling ready for extra responsibility, while Owen Hargreaves could be on the bench for Bolton match
Former Fulham man bemoans loss of captain Nemanja Vidic

By Ryan Benson

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is enjoying the added responsibility he has assumed as the club go through a major defensive injury crisis, while Owen Hargreaves is surprisingly pushing for a place on the Red Devils' bench .

England Under-21 international Smalling has been an ever-present for the last month or so and has impressed too, playing particularly well in the FA Cup win over Arsenal last Saturday.

The former Maidstone United player arrived at Old Trafford last summer for a sum in the region of £12 million and could have been forgiven for not expecting to feature too often. But since the start of the season he has overtaken both Wes Brown and Jonny Evans in the centre-back pecking order.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Smalling said: “It [the injury crisis] has made me step up. The coaches say you need to get out there and organise in terms of marking and be aware of the people around you.

“It’s a massive test but I’m enjoying it and hopefully I can keep things going. I don’t want the season to end.

“We are down to the bare bones in the defensive department, but being at home today will be a massive help because the fans can get behind us.”

United’s injury crisis means that Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea and Rafael da Silva will all miss out on Bolton’s visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, but it is the captain whom Smalling believes will be missed the most.

He continued: “Nemanja is a focal point of our defence and, being the captain, he’s a massive loss.

“But we’ve got experienced players that can come in, like Wes Brown. Bolton will be a physical challenge but we played against Stoke earlier in the season.”

There is some good news on the injury front for United, however, as Jonny Evans looks set to be available for the visit of Bolton, while more surprisingly, Owen Hargreaves could feature from the bench.

The England international has played five minutes of Premier League football this season, that coming against Wolves back in November, and after training with the first-team squad all week, the former Bayern Munich man could start on the bench if no reaction to his recent injury problems is experienced by the midfielder.

I have a basic understanding of half of it.

- leaves Guadalajara, Mexico. Fans there to send him off.
- arrives in manchester, see's taxi driver and he's his only 'fan'.
- it's very cold
- taxi driver asks him does he want a Coke Zero
- 'Coca Cola Zero, porque no probar' the Spanish roughly translates to 'why not try'.

dunno anymore.

Lol United don't score when they want. They wouldn't leave it so late if they did.

I've noticed a pattern and your not going to like this.

When ever a manager shows Fergie too much respect before going to OT they always lose. Pulis, Bruce, Alladyce (he capped and lost 5-0) and now Coyle. Yeah show Fergie a bit of respect as it's what he deserves but when you cream over him it comes back and bites you.

Plus I think it rubs off onto the players too.

did't see it, I've been busy today, but from what I have read, you lot couldn't break our defences down until late on in the game. for a team like united at home, you can't take any positives from that.

Manchester United have their eye back on Shakhtar's Douglas Costa
• Brazilian watches Bolton match as United's guest
• Sir Alex Ferguson previously tried to sign 20-year-old

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Admin/BkFill/Default_image_group/2011/3/19/1300557638530/Douglas-Costa-Manchester--007.jpg
Brazilian Douglas Costa is reported to be a target of renewed interest for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

Manchester United have resurrected their longstanding interest in Douglas Costa, the 20-year-old Brazilian who was once hailed as "the new Ronaldinho" and has been on Sir Alex Ferguson's radar for the past four years.

Costa, a part of the Shakhtar Donetsk side that have reached the Champions League quarter-finals, was a guest of the club for the 1-0 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, sitting in the directors' box alongside several of his representatives and United officials.

The club would not make any official comment but the Observer has been told Ferguson still has a serious interest in the player almost two years after he first tried to sign him from the Brazilian club Gremio. The proposed deal fell through at the time and Costa eventually moved to Skakhtar for a cut-price €6m in January 2010. After a slow start, he has become a key member of Mircea Lucescu's squad, scoring 15 goals in 61 appearances.

He has not, however, made an appearance for the Brazil senior team, and United are aware that may lead to problems securing a work permit if they can persuade Shakhtar to do a deal. The fee may also constitute a problem, with Shakhtar understood to want a sizeable profit if they are to lose the Under-20 international. Costa's advisers have been led to believe that may be a minimum £20m.

Ferguson, however, has long rated Costa among the more exciting young talents to emerge from South America, after coming to his attention via the club's extensive scouting network in Brazil. Costa has indicated he would like to move to England, despite having four years of his contract to run.

Costa helped Brazil to victory in the South American Youth Championship in 2009, scoring three goals in the process, but United's interest in the player dates back to when he was 16. Gremio is the club where Ronaldinho made his breakthrough and Costa has obvious similarities in terms of his ability to run with the ball and beat opponents, operating on either flank or in an advanced midfield position.

Dimitar Berbatov's late goal gave 10-man Manchester United victory over Bolton and took their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.
In a first half of few chances, Javier Hernandez shot wide and Martin Petrov hit a free-kick at Edwin van der Sar.

Home defender Jonny Evans was shown a straight red card in the second half for a lunge on Stuart Holden.

But Berbatov gave United the points by bundling home after Jussi Jaaskelainen failed to hold Nani's shot.

The Bulgarian's last-gasp strike, coupled with Arsenal's 2-2 draw at West Brom, allowed United to restore a cushion at the top of the table that had been damaged by defeats at Chelsea and Liverpool.

It had looked set to be a frustrating afternoon for the league leaders, who were more than matched by a spirited Bolton side for large parts of the game.
Indeed, had Matthew Taylor not directed a free header straight at Edwin van der Sar just moments before Berbatov's winner, Bolton might have been the victors.
Instead, United clinched the win but not without a cost, with Wes Brown being forced off at half-time with a suspected leg injury and Evans now facing a suspension.

This will stretch a defence that is already without injured quartet Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael da Silva and John O'Shea.
The patched-up United back four was regularly tested by Wanderers in an evenly contested first half.

Van der Sar was equal to Petrov's free-kick, Johan Elmander had a shot blocked by Patrice Evra and the backline, well led by Chris Smalling, was forced to repel a wave of Bolton attacks.

At the other end, United were perhaps unfairly denied a penalty by referee Andre Marriner when Hernandez's shot hit the outstretched arm of a sliding Gary Cahill.
In addition to this, Wayne Rooney acrobatically hooked a shot straight at Jaaskelainen and Hernandez missed the target from close range after being fed by a Rooney cut-back.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, serving the first of a five-match touchline ban, was in regular telephone contact with the United dugout and acted to change his side at half-time, replacing the injured Brown with Fabio da Silva and replacing Hernandez with Berbatov.

But, despite the open nature of the game, the changes brought United no closer to a breakthrough, with their attacks regularly thwarted by the excellent Bolton central defensive pair of Cahill and David Wheater.

Berbatov curled a shot wide and was then denied a clear run on goal by a last-ditch challenge from Cahill, as United moved closer to drawing a blank in a Premier League game at Old Trafford for the first time since September 2009.

Then, the game sparked into life with the dismissal of Evans.
The Northern Ireland international slid into a 50-50 challenge with Holden with his studs showing and his foot slightly off the floor. He was shown a straight red, while Holden was stretchered off with a gash in his knee.
Holden was replaced by Taylor and the substitute soon had a chance to open the scoring but wasted Wanderers' best opportunity of the afternoon when, left unmarked in the United penalty box, he could only head Gretar Steinsson's cross at Van der Sar.

Soon after, Nani cut inside from the United right and saw an effort beaten away by Jaaskelainen.

The Portugal international then tried his luck from the opposite side and this time the Bolton keeper could only parry the ball back into the path of Berbatov, who poked home to give United what could prove to be a vital three points.

Definitely not the case here in Canada.. we don't have this "dish the dirt.. get headlines mentality" I feel just look at how professional CBC and TSN are for their coverage of NHL! (except Don Cherry..) Over here.. our Sports sections in newspapers are fantastic and offer in-depth insight, editorials and just plain news. No problems for me. :)

Snubbed Ferdinand accuses Capello of lacking class

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/incoming/article186131.ece/ALTERNATES/gallery-large/Rio+Ferdinand+and+England+coach+Fabio+Capello

Rio Ferdinand has gone to war with England boss Fabio Capello.

The deposed England skipper is outraged by the way he has been treated. A source close to Ferdinand revealed:

“He is appalled by the lack of class, respect and good manners.

“All Rio knows about the captaincy is what he has read in the papers.

“Surely the time for Fabio to have seen him was before he shot his mouth off to the world’s media, not afterwards. And he still hasn’t spoken to Rio.”

Ferdinand, 32, is now considering his England future. He will miss Saturday’s game against Wales through injury but the chances of him ever playing again under Capello appear remote.

Ferdinand, who has won 80 caps, has received unprecedented support from England team-mates, shocked by the way Capello has treated him.

Capello has confirmed that he is ditching Ferdinand as England’s long term skipper and reinstating John Terry.

And he has accused the Manchester United star of snubbing him when they were expected to meet at Old Trafford last Tuesday’s Champions League visit from Marseille.

Capello said: “I tried to meet him at the game. He was ready to meet us but he preferred not to meet us. I don’t know why. It is a question for him, not me.

“I was ready. I wanted to speak with him and explain my decision.”

That version of events is denied by Rio’s camp. Our source confirmed: “Rio received a phone call from Franco Baldini (Capello’s no 2) on Monday saying Fabio Capello would see him at the United - Marseille game.

“That is all he has heard from them. All the time Rio was at Old Trafford on Tuesday neither Capello, Baldini or anyone from the FA contacted him even though they all knew where he was.”

In fact, Baldini appears to have misled Ferdinand over the captaincy.

He called the defender last Sunday and assured him that Capello had no intention of taking the captaincy off him.

The following day Capello contradicted his assistant in a media briefing.

Thirteen months after stripping Terry of the captaincy the Chelsea man has been handed the armband again.

Capello said: “Terry was my first choice when I decided on the permanent captain.

“I knew the doctors spoke with the doctors of Manchester United and Liverpool and I knew that Rio and Steven Gerrard were injured.”

Yet after failing to inform Ferdinand, Capello admitted he had spoken to vice captain Steven Gerrard.

“I spoke with Steven and it is no problem for him and he told me he wants to be fit to play the next game against Switzerland here,” said Capello.

Terrible way to treat your captain and a player you has been one of Englands best defenders. Capello man mangement skills are ****, I'm not sure he really wants to be the England manager.

Dimitar Berbatov desperate to sign new contract with Manchester United

Dimitar Berbatov reportedly wants to sign a new contract to commit his long-term future to Manchester United.

The Bulgaria international has scored 20 goals in the Premier League this season, including Saturday's late winner against Bolton Wanderers that consolidated United's position at the top of the table.

Now the News of the World reports that the former Tottenham Hotspur striker wants to sign a contract that would enable him to finish his career at Old Trafford.

However, it is thought that club and player are not yet seeing eye-to-eye on the length of the proposed deal. His current United contract expires in 2012.

Berbatov currently stands 10th in the Castrol Rankings, making him United's highest-placed player at the moment.

However, he has slipped from fifth in the Rankings a month ago, reflecting reduced playing time in recent weeks as manager Sir Alex Ferguson has more often opted for a starting strike force of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez.

I don't see a reason not to get him a new contract.

Maybe with the emergence of Chicho, then we got Macheda and Wellbeck impressing at Sunderland, he wants to cash in on Berbatov to buy some midfielders. That's why Rooney and Chicho have be playing together a lot, wants to develop that partnership for next season.

Plus Berbas 30. Just a conspiracy theory.

Hope not it would be a sad state of affairs if that happened, when you need to sell to buy that's when things will go down hill imo.

It's not too bad cashing in on players when they've hit 30.

Patrice Evra on Sir Alex Ferguson's hair dryer, Carlos Tevez and more...

One day Patrice Evra will write a book. 'I already have a title in mind,' he says. 'From the street to Manchester United.'

If his first major interview with an English newspaper is anything to go by, it will be quite a read.

An extraordinary rags to riches story told by a footballer who offers a rare insight into life at Old Trafford under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-09614EEB000005DC-676_468x325.jpg
Playing with fire: Evra has been through the mill at Manchester United

Evra is a wonderful raconteur. A deep, intelligent thinker who in the hour or so we spent together at United's Carrington training base this week articulated as well as anyone during Ferguson's 24-year tenure what it means to play for the world's most famous club, for arguably the world's greatest manager.

Fluent in five languages and now working hard to master Korean so that he can converse with his close friend Ji-Sung Park, he tackles a variety of subjects.

From his clashes with Chelsea to the long and winding road that eventually took him to the place he now considers his spiritual home; from that infamous blast at Arsenal last season, when he referred to them as 'babies', to why Carlos Tevez should still be a United player.

Not to mention his transition from striker to one of the two best left backs in the world.

'It was only after I arrived at United that I finally accepted that I would be a left back,' he says.

His take on United is fascinating. He refers to Ferguson as 'a culture' and talks of 'pulling on history' with his United shirt. He speaks of 'the fire' that not only burns inside him but also the man he believes will never walk away from the club.

'The manager will die on the bench,' he declares with a broad smile. 'It is his destiny.'

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-0110E02900000578-702_306x423.jpg

Earlier this season, Ferguson addressed the subject of retirement with his players. 'It was before a game,' Evra says.

'He just started talking about how people had been saying he was going to retire. And he asked us if we seriously thought he would just be sitting in his house watching the TV, listening to the radio and doing nothing.

'He said, "No chance. I have worked all my life and I will work until I die". For a moment he laughed. And then he said, "This is my victory. I cannot walk away from this".

'Before a game he always tells a small story. Sometimes he talks about when he was the Aberdeen manager. Another time he went round the dressing room and talked about the different players. The fact that here we were, from Korea, France, Serbia, Bulgaria, from different parts of England and the world, and how we had all come together to be in the same place. He talked about our stories. The different obstacles we had overcome to get here. It gave the players this huge lift.'

Evra recalls the first time he incurred his manager's wrath. It was his debut, a difficult encounter with Manchester City that United lost 3-1.

'He took me off after 45 minutes,' says Evra.

'I could tell he was angry. He just looked at me, deadly serious, and said, "Mr Evra, now just watch and see what is English football. And learn".'

Evra did more than that. He decided to learn about United, too. 'I got a load of DVDs,' he says.

'About the Munich disaster and the Busby Babes, about Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law, about Cantona. The whole story of the club. You meet these people around the club and I wanted to know who they were. What they had done for the club. Out of respect. Because when you shake the hand of Sir Bobby Charlton you can feel the legend.

'All the young players here need to understand the history of the club. After I watched those DVDs I realised I needed to respect the shirt. I needed to respect the story. Every time I play that is in my head. What a privilege it is to play for Manchester United. When you pull on the shirt you are pulling on history, and I say thanks to God that I play for this club. To be able to come in and train here. To work with legends like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-0156611700000578-180_468x286.jpg
Top of the pots: Proud Evra says it is delight sharing the shirt with legends like Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford

'When I arrived here people asked me what excited me most. I said it was not training with Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney but players like Giggs and Scholes. They are the history of the club. Giggs trains like a player who has never won anything in his career. His hunger. His desire to win, even on the training pitch.'

The same desire remains in Ferguson. Even at 68, after everything he has won.

'Alex Ferguson is a culture,' he says. 'And he is a winner. Football is like a pyramid. To reach the top is easy. It is staying there that is difficult. He does not let you rest. He is always hungry for the next game.

'I remember one match when we were winning 2-0 by half-time and he still gave us the hair-dryer because we should have been four or five up. He reminded us that people had paid money to watch us. "Why don't you respect them?" he screamed.

'He demands the highest standards. If you play a good game for United, you sit on the bench. Only if you play an amazing game do you stay in the team. Those are the rules and the players accept them.'

Even in this modern era of millionaire footballers, they also accept that infamous, aforementioned hair-dryer.

'After the Christmas party we had a couple of years ago, when there were the stories, he called us to a meeting and just killed everyone,' he says.

'The experienced players. The young players. It was our fault and he told us, and reminded us of the responsibility we have. He managed that situation with his temper, but he doesn't always have to because the players here have so much respect for him. If he thinks the team is sleeping he will still use the hair-dryer, though.'

Baptism of fire: Evra was hauled off after 45 minutes on his United debut against arch-rivals City

Back in January 2006, after his move from Monaco to United for a £5.5million fee in what now has to rank among Ferguson's finest buys, Evra was having a tough time.

'Playing for Manchester United was something I was not prepared for,' he says.

'At Monaco I was playing in front of 7,000. At United I was suddenly playing in front of 76,000. Not even a Champions League final and playing for France prepared me for it. When I got to Manchester I discovered a new job. It's not just football. In that first game, against City, I don't think I made too many big mistakes. But I remember standing by the post for a corner thinking, "Wow, football is so quick here". I realised if you want to play in England first you need to be strong. After that you enjoy the football.

'I was down afterwards, but not to the point where I didn't think I could succeed here. I still had confidence in my ability. But joining in the January did not make it easy. And it was not easy for my family. My son was three months old, we were living in a hotel in central Manchester for five months and the weather was not the same as Monaco! It was like a big slap in the face.'

He remembers being dropped for a game against Liverpool.

'The manager told me I would not be playing but, because my English was not so good, I didn't fully understand. I got changed and I went out for the warm-up on the pitch. Then Carlos Queiroz calls me over. "Patrice, what are you doing? You are not on the bench today." It killed me. It was so embarrassing.'

Unlucky for some: Now a regular for France, Evra's poor form in 2006 meant he missed out on the World Cup in Germany

A difficult six months cost him a place in the France squad for the 2006 World Cup.

'I was so angry with myself, seeing my team there without me,' he says.

'I thought, "That's it. I need to do something about this". I needed to get stronger for English football. So over the summer, I worked hard in the gym to make myself stronger. I was so hungry that by the time I arrived back for pre-season I was ready. I didn't need a pre-season. When we went to South Africa for a tournament, I played very well. Mike Phelan pulled me to one side and said, "Now you are a United player".'

He soon became a regular, securing a place ahead of Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre. Until, that is, it came to the 2007 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

'It was the only bad memory of the season,' he says.

'A few days before the game a story appeared in the papers - an interview with someone from my quartier (Parisian neighbourhood) - and it was all about how I had escaped a life of drugs and crime by becoming a footballer. It was not true but I remember the boss and Carlos that morning. "You won't be able to play in the final now," they said, laughing. "We have to protect the reputation of the club".

'They were joking, but when it came to the morning of the final the manager told me he was playing Heinze for tactical reasons. I have no doubt it was for that but I was gutted. He told me not to worry, that I would get to go on and win the game for us. After 10 minutes he told me to warm up, and for 80 minutes I stayed on the touchline. I was on fire. But I never got on. I had played every game that season, been voted the best left back by the PFA. Suddenly I was ready to quit the club.

'But then I calmed down, and I thought, "Maybe this is a test. This is life at United. You cannot expect to always be in the team". It is something I tell the younger players. I tell them that story.'

Still close: Evra says close friend Carlos Tevez still loves United despite moving on to rivals City last summer

He never had to tell Carlos Tevez, a player who remains among his closest friends and someone he believes should still be at United.

'When he was playing for us he was such a professional,' says Evra.

'He played with his heart. I know him. I still go to his house and I know he still loves United. I don't want to make a problem for him with City, but it suited his identity here.

'Even when he wasn't playing, he would come on and change the game. He would always fight. I tell him he should still be with us. If, one day, he wins the championship and the Champions League with City, I will say, "Fine, you made a good move Carlito". But until then... I just speak the truth.'

Born in Senegal but brought up in the same Parisian suburb as Thierry Henry - his father worked for the Senegalese Embassy - Evra is the product of a huge family where you clearly had to be heard to be seen.

'I am one of 25 brothers and sisters,' he says.

'I think it is fair to say that my father (married and divorced three times) did not watch a lot of TV!' For Evra it was only ever football. 'It was all I wanted to do,' he says.

'I would be out there, in the street, in the rain and snow, on my own. I never wore a shirt. Never really had a team. I liked Romario but I never had an idol. I just loved to play. I had this passion for the game.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-095C84BD000005DC-41_306x423.jpg
Learning his trade: Evra during his time at Monaco

'It was not easy for me. I had to fight to get where I am today. I never went to Clarefontaine or anything like that. Never went anywhere where they gave you everything. Your boots, your kit. I was from a tough area, Les Ulis. Not a bad area. As I said, it is not true that I had to escape a life with gangsters. I am proud of where I am from and my parents provided for all of us.

'But people thought I was crazy to pursue this dream. At school I remember completing a paper about what I wanted to do for a job. I put footballer and the teacher told me that being a footballer is not a job. She told me only one in 300 kids make it as a footballer. And she would say, "Do you think you will be the one?" And I said, "Yes, I do". And my classmates would sit there and laugh at me. I ignored them.'

Although there was a flirtation with the youth system at Paris St Germain, it not until he was 17 that he really got noticed.

'I was a striker playing in a tournament organised by my local sports centre,' he says.

'There was this Italian there and he asked me if I would go to Torino for a trial. They were in Serie B.

'I gave him my phone number and three days later he called and spoke to my mum. She said, "No way, we have no idea who this guy is". But then my brother said, "Look, Patrice is doing nothing, let him go".

'I spent 10 days there, they asked me to stay as a member of the youth team. But then I was approached by a scout from Marsala, a team from Sicily in the third division, and he offered me the chance to become a professional. He said I would get a house, and I said OK. I remember arriving at their training camp and putting on the tracksuit and the flip-flops and looking at myself in the mirror. It was like paradise.

'To this day it is the best feeling I have had in football. Not winning the championship or the Champions League but that moment, when I was 17 years old, and I had finally become a professional footballer. I had made it. I had proved people wrong. It was an amazing club. Like a big family. I was the only black guy in the club and there were people asking to have their picture taken with me because they had never seen a black guy. But I could be walking down the street and I would be invited into people's houses to join them for a meal.'

From Marsala he went briefly to Monza and then to Nice, where he was deployed at left back for the first time.

'It was my first game there and I was on the left wing when the left back got injured,' he says.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-065EA4AA000005DC-741_468x286.jpg
In it to win it: Evra is hoping Chelsea slip up and United regain their Premier League crown this term

'The manager, Sandro Salvioni, asked me to play there and then told me I'd be there again for the next game, against Strasbourg. I said no way, that I was a forward. "If you want to be in the team you play there," he said, so I agreed.'

Nice were promoted that season, with Evra named the best left back in Ligue 2.

'We won the championship and then I was signed by Monaco, by Didier Deschamps,' he says.

'I still wanted to play left wing but Deschamps said, "No, you are a good left back". And I was voted best left back in that division, too. We did well, reaching the Champions League final in 2004; the same year I made it into the France team.'

At Monaco his sparky personality caught the attention of Prince Albert, Evra forming what his team-mates considered an unlikely friendship.

'They could not believe he would send me text messages,' he says.

'But we got on well, and before the Champions League final he said he hoped we could win it for his father. Sadly we lost and Prince Rainier died the next year, but I dedicated our Champions League win in 2008 to him.'

Not that Evra has ever lost touch with his roots; with his identity. In his mind he will always be the fighter from the streets. Someone in whom the fire still rages.

'I still have the fire inside,' he says.

'And I'll admit that sometimes I can't always control it. You can talk about the altercation with the groundsmen at Chelsea as an example, although that day I think I managed to control my fire a bit.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-010C73D100000578-705_468x286.jpg
Battle at the Bridge: Evra was caught up in controversy following United's defeat to Chelsea in 2008

'It seems every time I play against Chelsea there is something wrong. But really, it is coincidence. I love to play against Chelsea and I love to win against them because they are a massive rival for the trophies. But I also respect Chelsea.

'I remember Eric Cantona saying that while he sometimes could not control his fire he would not have been the same player without it. I am the same. I need the fire.

'But I am not a bad boy. When I go into a challenge I go to win the ball. Never to hurt someone. It's why I was upset when Fabregas did it to me at the end of last season. It was probably why I said afterwards that Arsenal were like babies. I was upset because of the challenge. If you want to hurt someone, you invite them outside, away from the pitch, away from people and the referee. Just me and you. You don't try to hurt people on the pitch.'

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/04/30/article-1270182-09537898000005DC-596_468x286.jpg
Rags to riches: Evra plans to one day release a book about his extraordinary life

For Evra it is simply a matter of respect. He respects Ashley Cole as another brilliant left back, even if he does point out that he has again been voted the best in his position in the Premier League by fellow professionals.

But most of all he respects United. The club, the players, past and present, and the manager. Never has he been prouder in his four years at the club than when Ferguson first asked him to be captain. 'What pleased me most was not being captain but that my team-mates were so happy for me,' he says.

'From the moment I arrived here it felt like it was my destiny, because it was only when I became a United player that I found my true identity. This place suited my character. The people here were on my wavelength and I was able to be me.'

That was the interview. Now bring on the book.

Man Utd To Beat Arsenal To Wonderkid Signature (http://www.footylatest.com/man-utd-to-beat-arsenal-to-wonderkid-signature/21206)

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United look set to beat Arsenal to signing Southampton’s talented young player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Ferguson’s team seem to have gained the upper hand over Wenger’s Arsenal in the race for the 17-year-old in a deal that could be worth £10 million.
Ferguson will be looking to add youth to his squad in the light of player retirements and the package that consists of £5 million up front, with another £5 million due based on performances, will be the largest amount every paid for a teenager. Ferguson has been tracking the player for months and has the Daily Mirror has quoted him as saying he wanted to “pulled out all of the stops” to sign the player.
Arsenal thought they were in with a good chance of signing the youngster but they’re own winger Theo Walcott would probably impede Oxlade’s progress as there isn’t a big age difference. Ferguson seems to have convinced Oxlade that he will make better progress in his career if he opts for Old Trafford over the Emirates stadium.

It is thought that Southampton will try and get the player back on loan if they sell him but Ferguson wants to thrust him into action for the Man Utd first team as soon as possible. The deal is close to being tied up but the player and his father will soon enter into talks with United to iron out the details of the contract before it is signed.

Rooney celebrating Berba's goal! (http://yfrog.com/h2m9bfoj) seems very happy!

------

Hernandez hails Rooney

The Mexican has flourished in his debut season for the Red Devils which has seen him net 16 times and strike up an impressive partnership with the England forward.

That goal ratio has also led to the 23-year-old being selected to start matches ahead of Dimitar Berbatov, despite the Bulgarian being the Barclays Premier League's current top scorer with 20.

My secret

"Playing with Wayne is a dream. He's a monster to be alongside and I never believed I would get so many games and goals during my first season at United," he said.

Hernandez has been likened to former United striker Carlos Tevez - however 'Chicharito' wants to make his own name in the top-flight and for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

"'The Little Tevez'? I'm really proud that people are comparing me to him but I am Chicharito and am living my dreams at the moment," he said.

"I am very happy because I know there is much more to come. My secret is to study opposition defenders and work out their weak points.

"I try to outwit them with my speed and anticipation in the area. So my goals are not down to luck.

"Perhaps the better physical preparation here in England is the key to my performances. This aspect of the game is better than in South America and I have profited."

Blackpool's Ian Holloway: Manchester United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson's Five-Match Ban Is Harsh & £30,000 Fine Is 'Nonsense'

Banning Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson from the touchline for five matches is extremely harsh and the £30,000 fine for the Scot is "nonsense", according to Blackpool manager Ian Holloway.

The United boss was dealt his punishment for controversial comments on the performance of Martin Atkinson following defeat at Stamford Bridge in early march but Bloomfield Road boss Holloway believes the Scot has been a victim of a failing system.

Holloway said, as quoted by the Independent: "Refs are only human and they cannot possibly get it right without help. We already use technology in cricket, tennis and rugby. I have always said it has to be introduced in football and I think my point is being proven every week.

"Every big decision would be right and Sir Alex would not be spending the next five games in the stand because he wouldn't have had anything to moan about."

According to Holloway, FA decision makers fail to take into consideration the fact that the United manager’s frustrations are simply a function of how much he cares and the pressure he is under to deliver results at such a big club.

He added: "Quite why they have hit Sir Alex so hard I'm not sure. He is the greatest manager at the greatest club and us mere mortals can't even begin to imagine the pressure he is under every single week to get results.

"One day I'd like to be in a similar position, managing a club where everyone expects you to get three points in every game. But for now I couldn't bear the thought of it. It would be too much. The Premier League is such an incredibly intense level and even now, seven months into the season, I am still getting to grips with it and learning how to handle myself.

"So it is no wonder that if a referee makes an error and it costs his team, Sir Alex will speak out. He is only human. For the FA to punish him so harshly for complaining about what everyone else can see with their own eyes, I just can't understand.

"If the FA were trying to prove a point, they've certainly done that. But I'm not altogether sure it is fair when it wasn't Sir Alex that made a mistake in the first place."

The Tangerines boss is also adamant that the £30,000 fine picked up by Ferguson is over the top and questioned where the money was going.

"To say his punishment is harsh, by the way, is putting it mildly. A £30,000 fine on top of the ban is nonsense too, especially as the FA will pocket that. Why? Who are they to take that money? Give it to the people in Japan or Christchurch instead," said 48-year-old Holloway.

"When I got fined earlier in the season, I asked if I could give it to the family of Gary Parkinson, our youth team coach who had a stroke, but the FA wouldn't let me."

Bolton's Stuart Holden has absolved Jonny Evans of blame for the heavy tackle ended his season and left him staring at six months of rehabilitation.

Ruled out: Stuart Holden faces a length lay-off as a result of Jonny Evans' heavy tackle.

Holden, who suffered a broken leg in a challenge with Nigel de Jong while playing for the United States against Holland last March, is now battling to be fit in time for the start of next season as a result of the injury which will force him to miss Bolton’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Stoke City at Wembley next month.

United defender Evans was shown a straight red card by referee Andre Marriner for the second-half challenge which left Holden requiring 26 stitches in a deep wound to his left knee.
But despite having his season ended by his second serious injury in the space of 12 months, Holden insists that he does not hold Evans responsible after discussing the tackle with the United centre-half yesterday.

Speaking through his Twitter account, Holden said: “Just had a sincere phone call from Jonny Evans wishing me the best in my recovery, def wasn't intentional, just unfortunate part of the game.
“I can promise you all I will come back stronger and better than before. Have had bad luck in the past and will continue to beat it. “Thx again 4 all the well wishes, without my fans, I would be nowhere. Down 2 London 4 Surgery later today and then road 2 recovery begins.”

Holden, who has become a key figure for Owen Coyle’s team since arriving MLS outfit Houston Dynamo in Jan 2010, will also miss the USA’s Gold Cup campaign this June, having had his World Cup blighted last summer by his recovery from the broken leg suffered last season.
Bolton manager Coyle has backed Holden to make a full recovery from his latest injury, however. Coyle said: “First and foremost our main concern is for Stuart and his recovery. He will get all the time and support that he needs.
“Stuart has been outstanding for me this season and he has shown in his performances that he is one of the best midfielders in the Barclays Premier League.
“He has such desire, strength of character and a winning mentality, and he will draw on all those attributes in his rehabilitation.”

Evans will be suspended for United’s forthcoming league games against West Ham and Fulham before completing his suspension during the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City next month.
But despite recent complaints about refereeing decisions going against his team, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted referee Marriner was correct to dismiss Evans during Saturday’s 1-0 victory.

“I think the referee sent him (Evans) off because the player’s got a bad injury.” Ferguson said. “You can’t have a 100 percent complaint about the sending off, because once you raise your foot you’re putting yourself in a dangerous area.

“The boy’s got a bad gash, so that justifies the referee sending him off. Jonny Evans is not that type of player, but I don’t think we can have a real complaint.”
United’s injury problems could ease ahead of the trip to West Ham on Apr 2 with midfielder Owen

Hargreaves optimistic of being fit for selection having played less than six minutes of senior football due to injury since Sept 2008.

I actually spoke with the England U16 manager the other day in person. He came in to my work. I asked him about Ravel - his reponse:

"The most talented English footballer I've ever seen".

Now Kenny Swain has seen some top talent. He doesn't only manage U16 but also has a dealing with them right up to the U21. He brings them through and leaves them at that stage - when they are ready to join the senior squad.

That is quite a compliment.

RODWELL

As spring starts to get a proper grip around the country, the inevitable sign of the approaching denouement of the premier league season is the reawakening of transfer speculation in the press. For everton fans, this means the return of conjecture linking their boy wonder, jack rodwell, with treble chasing manchester united.

It seems ever since rodwell made his debut for the toffees in 2007, the link between the midfielder and a club playing top level european football, has been inescapable.

Everton have hardly had a strong campaign this year, and will be mindful that their struggle for consistency may represent a glass ceiling that without substantial financial investment, the current side will be unable to break through.

If rodwell decides to leave goodison, it would appear a move to manchester united would be one of the few practical alternatives in the premier league.

The midfielder is not yet one season into a five year deal with everton – the suggestion being that should sir alex ferguson want the 20 year-old, he may have to pay a healthy price.

David moyes has experienced the pain of losing his brightest and best to united before, and will be loathe to allow one of his key men to leave, despite the well publicised tight purse strings on the blue half of merseyside.

The difference between rodwell and the saga involving wayne rooney seven years ago, is that the everton midfielder has consistently reiterated his desire to remain a part of david moyes’ squad. Both he and the club have been mindful of the interest shown by interested suitors and as yet no serious thought of leaving has been broadcast.

Should a deal be brokered, questions would be asked about how regularly rodwell could expect to play in a side that may well start the next season as treble winners.

Manchester united’s engine room is in an interesting position at present – the new contract signed by michael carrick earlier this month and partial indication of where the club see the short term future of the team. Owen hargreaves remains sidelined, and paul scholes has yet to tie himself to his current employers past the summer.

Presumably, with darren fletcher and darron gibson also in the mix, a move for rodwell would only be sanctioned if one or more of these players were to leave old trafford in the summer.

United fans may argue that in any case the acquisition of rodwell would be a strong move from ferguson and recognition that certainly for hargreaves, the end of the road has been reached. There is no doubt that despite the exciting nature of this season, all of the big sides have issues to deal with and there are few at old trafford that would grumble about the signing of everton’s crown jewel.

Regardless of how the next few months progress, you can be sure that when david moyes takes his summer break in june, he will struggle to relax with one of the biggest sharks swimming around his midfield protégé

VICTORY IS OURS !!!!!

Sadly, your petitioning made no difference whatsoever. Coma had decided to unban him before he even saw the thread.

Anyways, I'm not against the unbanning. I had no input in the initial banning so I'm indifferent.

From here on out, keep the thread on topic. - Galv_
