We should totally have a flame other fans sticky, so we can talk like normal people in the club threads.

Let's make a deal, we all play nice in this thread and the other clubs threads? We only tease Luverpool fans when united are playing them and vice versa.

I'm pretty sure PowerSlave had a Chelsea badge as his avatar a few years back, and an Arsenal one before that, etc, etc.

In other news, check out what's on the official United site's front page... I found it kind of fail but some of you might like it.

Why is Fletcher still underrated?

Why don't opposition fans rate Darren Fletcher? It's a point that irks ManUtd.com's Ben Hibbs...

I had an argument recently with a Liverpool fan about Darren Fletcher. “He’s not a top, top player is he?” he said. “He’s OK, but he’s not as good as Mascherano.” I’m a big fan of Fletcher and that was all it took to set me off.

Even in the days when some United fans would grumble at the slightest error, I preached patience. The first time I saw him play was in 2002, I went to watch United’s Reserves for the first time against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford. This lanky, skinny kid in the middle of the park was absolutely everywhere, spraying passes all over the pitch like a seasoned pro stepped down to the lower levels. It all looked so easy. You could tell then he was a class above the rest.

Upon his integration into the first-team, however, Fletch suffered because, as a young, lightweight lad, he had to earn his stripes out on the wing. He was labelled by many in the media as the new Beckham, well wide of the mark and frankly a lazy cop-out description of his talents. Then, when he moved infield, there was the void left by Roy Keane (even before Keane left he was no longer the all-action, box-to-box maniac he was in his prime). It was a tough education. But Fletch took it – and the negative comments he often received – on the chin.

Fortunately, Sir Alex is a good judge of character and talent. In the last few years he’s honed his game, bulked up in the gym – which he admitted he always found difficult to do as a young player because he just didn’t see the results of his hard work – and he’s now approaching the peak of his career. But while United fans are, in the vast majority, converts to what Fletcher brings to the team – technical quality, clever use of the ball, energy, a calm head and, lately, a great deal of maturity – fans of other clubs seem preoccupied with out-dated judgements.

Fletcher was one of United’s best players at times last season, and I honestly believe that had he not suffered one or two injuries he wouldn’t have been far off in the running for Player of the Year. In the depths if disappointment after Rome, Sir Alex admitted Fletcher was a major loss due to suspension. Would he have halted Iniesta and Xavi? We'll never know, and Barcelona might well counter that their own absent men would have raised the level of their performance.

The point is, it’s recognition of how important Sir Alex believes his fellow Scot is to his team. And as everyone looks down the squad list for the men who’ll step to the fore in the ‘life after Ronaldo’ era, Fletcher is one that has to, and I believe will, rise to the challenge.

He’s Scotland’s captain, a deserved title for the influence he wields in national colours, where he’s always been one of the big fish, even from a very early age. Now I think his time has come at United. He was outstanding in the first half against Chelsea at Wembley, and whereas we’re expecting the likes of Nani, Anderson and Berbatov to an extent to raise their game, Fletcher need only avoid injuries and continue the excellent work he did last season.

We could have lost Fletch last summer when a number of clubs, Everton included, expressed an interest after a season in which he enjoyed only limited involvement in United's double success. Thankfully, he stayed and signed a new contract. Although, at either club, he’d have proved that deluded Liverpool fan wrong.

Ah yes....the good old GLORYHUNTER argument. No, I was United even when those two teams where winning the PL. But lets talk about the term itself...shall we??

Whats a gloryhunter? someone who decides to be a fan of a team that wins everything?? If that was the case, would be a Barca fan......but I'm not, I spit on them and stick my middle finger at them.

If someone is new to the PL or to football in general (like most white folks here in NY), is it wrong to pick a team from the top 4?? Of course, if you pick liverpool, you would NOT be called a gloryhunter because they haven't won the PL in 20 yrs, is that right?? Well, I have a close friend who last year became a liverpool fan, and its because of the beer sponsorship and their style of play....is he a gloryhunter?? what if he picked United???

What do you want future generations to do?? would you say to a 12yr old who is just getting into football: "NO!! you can't pick United as your team because they always win....you have to pick a losing team.....like Bolton or the scousers".

When scum in forums call other people gloryhunters it makes me laugh, what if the team they are a fan of miraculosly won something....like the scousers winning? Then all you scumsers would be gloryhunters, right??

Bottom line, in order NOT to be called a gloruhunter, you must back a loser team like LIVERPOOL.

Actually, the real bottom line is: It does not matter what little 17 yr olds call others online.

Valencia is looking very good so far. Very fast and not afraid to take anyone one by the looks of it. Also seems to have a good cross on him.

Obertan (the French winger), has an injury so we haven't seen him in action yet.

Owen's doing ok. Hopefully he can stay injury free :DD

Valencia is already proven quality in the Premiership, was a sensible signing for Fergie to make. You needed a replacement for Ronaldo and although Valencia is not as good, he may be the better team player.

Think that Obertan is quite a speedy direct winger as well, so plenty of chances should be created for Owen, Rooney and Berbatov.

How is Nani's injury? He has bags of ability but has just not been consistent enough.

So, In order to be a fan, you must have a connection from the team?? Thats the dumbest pile of crap I have ever heard. Then football would not be an international game. All those teams that do the world tours would go play in empty stadiums because noone on the other side of the globe is a fan.

Meanwhile, The Sun follows up the Manchester Evening New's claim that Sir Alex is chasing Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The tabloid claims the boss is trying to wrap up a £5million deal for the stopper before Bayern Munich increase their bid for the 23-year-old. ManUtd.com

Would like this to be true, because VDS is getting on a bit and Kuz isn't reliable. Even if Foster had a bad game against Chelsea, I still think he's goo enough to be 2nd choice but his proneness to injuries means he can't be relied on for first choice.

It was a blunder, but it wasn't THAT huge of a blunder. He thought the keeper was a bit higher up, and he didn't expect Kuyt (I think it was Kuyt) to burst forward to intercept it. Like R3D said, Rio didn't care much about the game and took it as a friendly and nothing more. I'd rather have him in the heart of my defence than any other Englishman. :D

Really cant see the point of bringing him back. Would get the odd sub on and Carling cup game, would also stop the youth getting games like Tosic/Obertan. Would most likely command a big wage to play so little games too which wouldnt help your financial situation. Anyways...i want someone to make a signing, be it Fergie, Wenger, Guardiola or Rafa :( Gotten a tad boring in recent days and needs some big big news.

That is why Fletcher will never win over the fans. When a players abilties are doubted, you notice there mistakes more.

If a player who you like makes a few mistakes in a game, you dont notice as much and dosent create a discussion.

One mistake, hes played at least 4 misplaced passes. I was impressed when he won the ball off Carr but just give it right to Vignal and Birmingham went on the attack. He hasnt been that bad but hes hardly been a standout performer, could do with bringing a different midfielder on for Scholes/Fletcher, neither have really been on top of there game in terms of passing which is needed against this stubborn Birmingham team.

But with Fletcher and probably Berbatov there errors are picked up on more by their haters than if a player like Rooney makes a mistake.

Either the Glazers were lying and Fergie actually has a crap budget to work with....

The thing is you have to overpay to get good players this summer and SAF won't do that.

I think he has money to spend but he chooses carefully how to spend it, which I think is wise.

For example Chelsea are rumored to pay £50million for Aguero, he's a good player but that's overpaying.

Calling Sir Alex deluded and saying hes losing the plot?

Thats the kind of things you hear from fans when the team is going through a rough match and the managers ability is being brought into question.

Why dont we give this squad a chance first?

He means a central midfielder i think. Carrick/Ando and Fletcher isnt really big enough for a top club, Hargreaves looks to be a problem and maybe should think of replacing him sooner than later, he wont be the same player he was when you won the CL and thats the level you need. Palacios/De Rossi/Toure, people in that mould to destroy attacks and put the work in.

Whats your logic behind saying United cant recover from ONE defeat?

Anyway heres the team today:

Foster
Neville/Evans/Vidic/Evra
Valencia/Fletcher/Scholes/Nani
Rooney/Berbatov

Fletch/Scholes in midfield? This is why i would be worried as a Utd fan. Them two are not good enough to start and control games. Scholes was but now has lost it a bit and Fletch hasnt got the ability to make up for it where he gets away with it with Carrick. Might be enough to see off Wigan but if Fergie plays them repeatedly then i think youll struggle.

I wouldnt say any of our central midfielders so far this season have proved they must start, so im not too worried with them started today, they have a chance and lets see how they get on.

Just like the rotation with Berbatov and Owen to see who deserves to partner Rooney.

Top class football today!!! 5 goals away from home is always brilliant!!!

Defence was solid today, great so see Vidic back too!!

Fletcher was ace in midfielder, and Valencia great on the right made some nice runs and got an assist too!

Owen, Rooney and Berbatov on the score sheet is great to see!!! Nice freekick from Nani too :D:D:D

Very impressive 2nd half performance. Especially happy with the performance of our wingers & strikers. Our defence looked pretty solid as well with Vidic in there. Foster made a few vital interventions. Overall, good performance from the lads and they now just need to keep it up and beat Arsenal next week. :D

What you think of this? No chance? Likely? Would you want it to happen?

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly readying a bid for Tottenham Hotspur's technically skilled midfielder Luca Modric, according to Metro, who further indicate that Michael Carrick will be added to the £10 million deal in order to sweeten the transfer pot.

The title holders have a contemporary history of admiring certain Spurs players, with both Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov having found their way to Old Trafford after lighting up White Hart Lane.
Carrick, a West Ham United academy product, has won three successive Premier League crowns under Ferguson, and also owns a Champions League winners medal.

Considering Spurs boss Harry Redknapp's recent confession that he is not averse to continuing the recruitment drive that has seen a number of former Lilywhite representatives return to north London, the audacious player-plus-cash swap is not too far-fetched. However, the Cockney coach is unlikely to do business on the this deal due to the high regard he has of Modric.

Carrick recently missed a penalty at Turf Moor during United's shock 1-0 loss to Burnley.

Your midfield has never been your strongest point once Scholes has started ageing. Hargo/Carrick is probably your best but without Hargs its really nothing special, probably the worst out he top 4. Carrick with Ando/Fletch/Scholes just doesnt work. When Hargs there he gives Carrick the freedom to play and do what hes best at. When hes not there Carrick has to move back and isnt given the freedom because Ando/Fletch/Scholes wont play the holding role. Just cos you had the same players when you won stuff doesnt mean its cos of them, your immense defence and attackin fluidity won them, not your midfield.

With Ronaldo and Tevez we cant keep going on and on about them, yes we will miss them, yes we would rather have them in our side BUT they are both gone and we cannot base every discussion on them, they are gone and as much as we hate it we have to move on!

I may be wrong but the "pouncing" that has taken place when something wrong was said was based on you calling our midfield ****. Now i dont see how we are deluded if we react badly to that statement, at least when Tommy commented on our midfield it was a logical comment.

Cliche - Why the personal attack on Santino? Makes you sound such a bitter child its amazing, sorry but if we want to be positive about our players on a man united thread then this should be none of your buisness and if we are truly 'deluded' then you will get the last laugh yes?

Also like to ask how Liverpools midfield is better I would argue the starting 3 is stronger but once you go by Macscherano Aquilani (who could easily flop) Lucas ...oh yeh Gerrard who is debatebly now a supporting striker! Who have you got? Man United have strength and depth in midfield even if it is not a 'amazing' midfield

Why's Valencia a Wigan reject?

I don't think you can deny who the better finisher is out of Tevez and Owen :) BTW his first goal was sweeeeeeeet

I have no problem with people debating the idea that United have a 'weak' midfield as this is a forum where people come to debate there ideas its just when things get personal that things go a bit far for me or ridiculous comments like your 'midfield is ****' thats why I never really have a go at Tommy as I may not always agree with his opinions he posts it in a sensible manner and backs it up well

This isn't the first time Kopkiwi has posted something, and asked a couple of questions about our thoughts and Cliche has come in straight after to wind everyone up. You think people would learn by now to not respond.

Anyway, Modric would be a good signing for Utd, but our main concern is a DM. Carrick is trying to do this job but everyone knows it is not his style and using him as a temp only works if your not doing it for every game.

IF Hargreaves stays fit, then him and Carrick would be solid in midfield as it lets Carrick attack more and his passing is quality.

Valencia was not a Wigan reject, and it amazed me how the Wigan fans booed him last weekend on his return. He spent 2 years on loan at Wigan and then 1.5 years in a contract. It's not asif he used Wigan for a season to get a contract with a bigger club. I never seen Palacios get that reception.

Digary
08-24-2009, 17:06
Agreed, if you can get Hargreaves fit he will bring a new dimension to your game as he will allow Carrick to come of the leash and show a greater scope for his creativity. Could be a big thing for you lot. Heard hes not going to be fit until at least january though and evan then he will have to get match fit and deal with any possible setbacks.

08-24-2009, 19:17
It's a different situation though. Fletcher and Anderson in midfield means one DM and one CM. Anderson and Modric in midfield means a CM and an AM, too risky nowadays to not have a DM.

If Modric came in, i would prefer to see Carrick and Hargreaves in the center and Modric and Valencia / Nani on the wings.

Demiant

They looked pretty impressive against you in the league wins. But didn't seem to give two ****s in the CL games.

Holy crap, someone tell me why the heck is ryan giggs playing? I cant even give him a half time rating as he does not deserve a 1/10. I am still not impressed with valencia or nani. I cant believe im going to say this but fletcher has been our best player first half. Get giggs off.
