Ball into the box or something Welbeck sort of knocked it up, the defender got in front of it, he ran round the defender and smashed a volley in, best I can describe it tbh.

In regards to the red card, from what I have seen there has been 2 angles, the one where the ref can see it you can see he lunges 2 footed with his studs up, the other looks like he is quite low.
End of the day you can't dive in like that, Nani had no chance of getting the ball with Kompany diving in so violently. Winning the ball = irrelavent.
Fair play to Nani for not crying about it though!

Looking at replays now. It does look a red. He just dived in 2 footed stupidly. I think it was his own stupidity really, why dive in two footed.
Love ITV sitting there basically trying their best to make United look shit haha.
One thing the commentator said was "Oh you don't wanna spoil the game" funny no one was saying that when Evans was sent off...

01-08-2012, 13:58
That red card shouldn't really be disputed. Yes it's a bit harsh but it's definately understandable, it didn't come from nowhere. End of the day, he went in with 2 feet and from that point he has a choice to make and a red is always an option.

Scholes did well all things considered, but it still was a terrible decision by Fergie. The game didn't turn in our favour at that point. We just needed to do the same as the first half when we looked like scoring a lot more goals.

We should have prevented both goals really. The free kick was very good but no one jumped! Phil Jones made a little jump. Not saying it would have stopped it but JUMP! I don't think they even attempted to jump for the Cabaye free kick. The other was an error by Scholes from the throw in and then Anders should have done better with Aguero's shot.

I think credit should go to Mancini for his tactics. His team were way more prepared for playing with 10 men than we are, United just go for it  City's 3-5-1 worked a treat, when we had a ball the back line was 5 which made it frustrating for United.
Credit to City for that.
I think Scholes coming on was fine, look at that stat I posted before, incredible, we kept the ball a bit better when he was on and that was what was needed to take the sting out of the game.
I'm obviously not happy at the second half, we conceded 2 cheap goals, but you know, it happens.
Obviously Fergie is going mental.
However I just walked to the library and saw some disapointed looking City fans - safe to say that has improved my mood dramatically

3. Blaming the referee isn't always the answer
For City, the temptation was to blame Chris Foy. They booed him off the pitch at the end. There were cries of "fix" and "cheat" and, at half-time, Roberto Mancini's right-hand man, David Platt, was waiting for him at the entrance of the tunnel. The anger was clear and voluble, and there is no getting away from the fact that Vincent Kompany's red card left them in a state of disrepair. Yet Kompany, as captain, failed his team the moment he launched himself off the ground with both feet. It does not matter what intent he had, or how much of Nani and the ball he got; the simple fact is that a player raising both feet in a sliding tackle is asking for trouble. Foy made mistakes, inevitably, but the bigger ones took place long after Kompany had left the pitch. Aleksandar Kolarov brought down Antonio Valencia for a clear penalty at 3-1 and City could have taken the game to a replay if Phil Jones's handball had been spotted.
A very honest analysis. It's refreshing that he doesn't just pick out the errors going against City and also highlights the missed penalty on Valencia (which would've certainly killed off the game). City obviously suffered harder from his harsh decision early in the game, but he was terrible in both ways. I fully believe if it was a United player making that challenge he would've been sent off as well. Foy just isn't a very good referee.

Rooney plans United stay
Striker moves to reject rumours
http://img.skysports.com/12/01/660x350/Manchester-City-v-Manchester-United-Wayne-Roo_2699856.jpg
Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring his first goal in the FA Cup win over Man City
Wayne Rooney claims he wants to stay at Manchester United for 'a long time' after scoring twice in the FA Cup win over Manchester City.
The England star went into Sunday's game at the Etihad Stadium with his future at Old Trafford the subject of intense speculation.
Reports have suggested Rooney could be on his way out of United, but the striker made a point of clutching the United badge after scoring his first goal against City.
Asked if he had a point to prove against City, Rooney told ITV: "No, not at all. Everything that has been in the press of late is a load of nonsense really.
"There is no problem for me at this club, I want to be at this club for a long time."
Shock
Paul Scholes came out of retirement and was named on the bench, coming on in the second half.
And Rooney admitted the United players did not know about the situation until they got into the dressing room before the game.
"It was a bit of a shock to be honest, we didn't know until we were in the dressing room, but he's a great player," added Rooney.
United were left hanging on at the end after City pulled two goals back in the second half and Rooney admits maybe they took their foot off the gas after going in 3-0 up at half-time.
"We knew it was going to be difficult today, going 3-0 up we maybe took our foot off the gas a bit," continued Rooney.
"City got two goals and we had to make sure we saw the game out and thankfully we managed to do that."

Rooney: I'm going nowhere
Wayne Rooney has moved to kill speculation over his future, insisting that he intends to remain at Old Trafford for 'a long time'.
Recent press rumours have suggested that the striker could be sold either this month or in the summer, citing an alleged breakdown in his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Having dismissed those stories as idle conjecture on Friday evening, Rooney again had his say on the matter after scoring twice in United's FA Cup victory at Manchester City.
"I think everything which has been in the press of late has been a load of nonsense, really," the striker told ITV Sport.
"Because it's me, because it's Manchester United, it's blown up out of context. There's no problem with me at this club and I want to be at the club for a long time."
Sir Alex Ferguson backs Rooney's assertion, but warned his star man that he will continue to be burned by the glare of the media's spotlight.
"We must explain this about Rooney - he's a headline-maker, whether it's good or bad," the boss told MUTV. "The press don't mind. It's a situation we experienced many years ago with Paul Gascoigne.
"This is the new Paul Gascoigne: a headline-maker, and we're better seeing him like that today when it's good stuff. Any flaws in Wayne will be absolutely annihilated by the press because that's what they're like. That's the animal we're dealing with.
"Today it was a magnificent performance from him. There's no problem with the boy's temperament, no problem with him at all. It's just off the field he's going to be spotlighted all the time."

---
Mixed emotions for Sir Alex
“I think we made them look better than they were,” the boss told ITV and MUTV. “We just had a carelessness in the second half. The problem was, we were 3-0 up at half time and we thought we were through and they took our foot off the pedal.

THIS!
At least City didn't roll over and die. And to think they scored 2 goals with 10 men with no Silva, Johnson, Barry, Balotelli, Dzeko, Yaya, Kompany & Hart on the field tells me three things:
1. There is a strong desire amongst the players to win. They don't want to be humiliated 6-1. They don't want to die or roll over and get a good spanking. They want to win. They are champions in the making.
2. They are not there just for the money. But it's hard convincing people of this.
3. Mancini is a tactical genius.

Agent - Vidic is like Messi
Serbian fully focused on recovering from injury, says agent
Nemanja Vidic's agent has ruled out the captain departing Manchester United, insisting it would be the equivalent of Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona.
Serbian centre-back Vidic will spend until next season on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury during United's UEFA Champions League defeat to Basel at the beginning of December.
His absence has struck a severe blow to Sir Alex Ferguson's men as they bid to defend the Premier League title.
Vidic's agent Silvano Martina says the 30-year-old, who is contracted at Old Trafford until summer 2014, is committed to United and focused on recovering from his injury.
And the representative has likened the skipper's importance to the Red Devils to that of Barca superstar Messi's at Camp Nou.
He told calciomercato.it: "Vidic for Manchester United is like Messi for Barcelona. How could you take him?
"He's the United captain and a key player for Sir Alex Ferguson. A move next summer is absolutely not an option.
"The player is only thinking of recovering as soon as possible from his ugly knee injury."
Sky Sports (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11667/7420160/)

So it was ok for Mancini to do the card waving gesture to the ref the other week?
It was ok for your players to surround the ref (maybe somewhere between 5-7 players) when you didn't get awarded a pen? (funny how ITV didn't even mention that)
Since you don't like the ref being pressurised and all....
EDIT: The view Rooney got was the view where it looked very dangerous (the other side made it look less so) and I can't blame him for saying that! All he did was say it was 2 footed (Correct)
Everyone pressurises the ref to some extent, everyone has words with the ref, funny how when Rooney does it he gets on the back pag of the Sun and everyone notices it...
http://i.imgur.com/OF63M.gif
Don't know how to post gifs but heres a great view of the tackle.
It was high, (Above the ankle) 2 footed, studs were showing and he had lost control of his body.
And before...
"Oh but he won the ball and didn't touch Nani"
Irrelavent. Nani jumped out the way causing him to lose possession, Nani wouldn't have jumped out the way but for Kompany's lunge. Ronaldo won a similar pen a few years ago against Boro, the keeper dived in and Ronaldo jumped out the way, he got the pen because he lost possession due to the keepers challenge.

Dangerous lunge from Kompany but good technique if he has hopes to compete in the long jump in the 2012 Olympics.
Referees and the FA are stomping down on these challenges. It doesn't matter if the player gets the ball or if the player makes no contact, it's a dangerous challenge and a deserved red card. Referee just doing what was expected of him. Rooney knew this.

All he did was point out to the ref it was a two footed tackle, which it clearly is.
And this nonsense that Nani jumped out of the way just doesn't wash. Is Nani supposed to leave his knee/shins/ankle/metatarsals there, for Kompany to try and shatter?
The biggest hypocrite in all this is Mankini. He disgraced his profession running up and down the touchline like a nut job, asking for that cheating scouse git to be sent off. :snicker

So he cheated Kompany off the field? Sorry lad, it's no one's fault but Kompany himself that he got sent off. He presented the ref with the opportunity by going in with 2 feet off the ground. By the way, the only thing you're accomplishing with that last sentence is making yourself look ridiculous. I remember very well how excited you were about Rooney possibly joining you last season. Or was that just small time mentality to get one over us?
Why is everyone always looking for excuses? When one of us commits such a tackle we're generally extremely pissed off because of how stupid he is and how he's letting down the team. Kompany let you down, yet you're just pointing fingers to others. Victim much?

Sir Alex backing for Rooney
Sir Alex has defended Wayne Rooney's actions following Vincent Kompany's two-footed tackle on Nani at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was upset with the United striker gesturing to referee Chris Foy that the foul was dangerous and complained it played a part in the official opting to show the red card to the home captain.
However, the manager maintains it was the correct decision to dismiss the Belgian and feels Rooney's reaction was*an inevitable one in the wake of a poor challenge.
"I have no concerns about the behaviour in that respect because, to my mind, it was a reckless challenge and Nani is a very lucky boy because he didn't get a bad injury," he told a FIFA press conference in Zurich.
"I have no complaints about Wayne, I don't think it was unacceptable what he did. I think it was a natural reaction to a bad challenge from an opponent.
"But I can understand where Roberto's coming from because that's what happens with players today, they all appeal for penalties or players to be sent off. It's an unfortunate part of our game."

Yes they can (seeing how Man City fans started throwing bricks yesterday) and they cannot be trusted in such delicate matters. What I believe is, in this case, we should just forget about what happened and hope that no such instances occur in the future. Yes, Suarez has an aggressive personality and has been surrounded by controversies before but though I'm not a big fan of his, I know that he has great talent and we must not let his conduct alone overshadow his brighter side.

I think the way City set out in the 2nd half confused United a bit. 3-0 down in a cup game at half time, I think United expected City to come at them, and they didn't.
City took up a defensive formation and United almost didn't know what to do with the ball. City hit 2 sucker punches and almost nicked it. Fair play, but United got the result which was great. :)

Has relevance in the league because every result matters but this recent Manchester derby was in the FA Cup, City lost but are still trying to make a City defeat look better than a United win. Which is why we're hearing about the 6-1 defeat. Couldn't care less if City had 9 men and dominated us for 89 minutes and we snatched a goal at the end, we would be through and they would be out.
Makes them seem like they're back to their small time days when they say they are the morals winners etc.. because they played well for 45 minutes with 10 men like they're the 1st team to do it.

Will quote myself to anwser your quote of yourself 3x

In the league you have the time to recover from bad results, in the FA Cup you do not, we got the job done. There is no goal difference in the cup, there is no points won or lost. It's getting the job done in 90 minutes of football, we did and knocked City out.

I would have been mad if we did go for a blowout when we clearly did not need to. We perhaps shouldn't have taken our foot of the gas as much as we did, but I think it was wise to save some energy for the upcoming games. We need to put together a string of wins in the league so when you are up 3-0 in HT I don't really see a point going for 6-0 when you have your work cut out for you in the next game.

Paul Scholes' second coming will be a winning gamble
But, at no cost, he has added a playmaker who is the tried and tested real deal when it comes to Manchester United class. It is a no-brainer.
The capability to use Scholes as a bit-part player for the rest of the campaign has ensured there is no need to panic buy and waste cash on inferior signings not immediately up to the Reds’ level.

That's the good thing about Mancini, he like Wenger will always give his opinion. If a question is asked, he doesn't dodge it. Eric Harrison: Paul Scholes’ return to action will boost Manchester United - and help the club’s young guns progress
Eric Harrison, the mastermind behind United’s famous class of 92, says the veteran midfielder’s reintroduction to the fold will lift United – and provide a boost, rather than a barrier, to the young pretenders hoping their time had come when Scholes stepped down last year.

Like Wenger? Wenger only gives his honest opinion if it's got nothing to do with his own team. Anything against his own team and he "didn't see it". Now every manager is like that a bit, but Wenger's especially bad in that area. There's protecting your own players and there's just being silly (see also: Kenny Dalglish).
But I've said it before in the City thread: Mancini has class. He's media friendly in a Mourinho way but without the arrogance and pettiness. Like Mourinho though, I probably only like him because he seems particularly respectful towards Manchester United and Fergie. Mourinho's dislike of Liverpool and Benitez was definately a plus, so it'd be nice if Mancini took the same road.
Maybe he sees City as a stepping stone.

I like Mancini, sort of, I don't like some of his recent hypocrisy "Oh Rooney how dare you get my player sent off" *proceeds to wave imaginary cards*
He's alright though.
Dear all,
I appealed because I obviously completely disagreed with the interpretation of the officials on the day but that happens in football and we move on. I wonder though if we are now going to see an unprecedented wave of red cards on match days because we sanction "if's" and "maybe's"? Are we going to look back at video evidence for every single challenge that goes unnoticed by the officials, look at different scenarios and potential outcomes of what could have been considered a good tackle and then sanction it? Players and managers are starting to expect more sending offs from referees and I think it's for the wrong reasons. My understanding is that English football prides itself on the hardness, the fairness and the tradition of its game. That is why hundreds of millions of people tune in to watch Premier League football and English referees have always been a key factor to that success in my opinion. So I don't agree with people saying that referees in this country aren't doing well as I think they are the best in the world. Hopefully common sense will prevail again in the future and I for one hope not to see consistency in sending offs and suspensions when the intent of a player is to win the ball.
I'd like to add to this that I waited for the suspension to be confirmed before making any comments on the matter as I didn't want to give the impression that I was using the media as a tool to benefit my own personal agenda in this case. I'm not speaking on behalf of the club or anybody else, this isn't me defending myself, this is just me raising a genuine concern.
If football fans decide I'm wrong in raising these concerns then I will have no problem in accepting the fact that times are changing again for our game.
Vincent Kompany.
Hmmm so he must have been furious with Mancini waving the charades card? I mean Rooney only said "2 foot" but lets ignore that.
I don't get how waving the imaginary card is any different than shouting "IT'S A YELLOW/RED!" anyway. Evra did it when Downing committed a blatant (and I mean blatant, can probably retreive a GIF if anyone wants) dive and got away with it. I remember the commentator then critcising him, but he just recevied the wrong, why shouldn't he ask for him to be punished; however that is just one for instance, and sometimes asking for cards is stupid, but I don't see how pretending to wave a card is different from shouting "red" at the ref.
Metal Warrior

Speechless at that Kompany statement really, yet another victim. You went in two-footed you absolute weapon, you got the punishment you risked (not necessarily what you deserved as Souness so accurately put it), so take it like a fucking man and sit it out. If Nani hadn't jumped that's his season finished right there. Learn from it and don't make tackles like that in the future.
If there's one thing I absolutely fucking hate in a player it's his complete inability to accept responsibility for his actions.
" I for one hope not to see consistency in sending offs and suspensions when the intent of a player is to win the ball."
How can some of these thick cunts still fail to understand that the end doesn't justify the means in these instances. You can get the ball and near enough chop off a players leg in a single tackle if you just go flying in. You're not the only human being on the pitch, you can play hard all you want as long as you don't endanger the health of other players. You could just end their season if you misjudge such a wild tackle so use some common sense. That's why you're banned you tool.

Loving the extreme post haha!
Yeah he ran the risk and got sent off. Simple as that.
It's just like the idiots who were defending Shawcross.. the intention doesn't freaking matter.. what matters is the outcome of the tackle and what you did. In Kompany's case well it's two footed. Not even "hard tacklers" like Song or Vermaelen do those kinds of dangerous plays.
His statements just make him sound like more of a self-entitled douchebag.
