10:19 Aliens, The Terminator and Titanic director James Cameron is set to take a leaf out of the Wachowski brothers' (of The Matrix fame) book by concurrently developing a game and film which share their subject matter.
In an interview with BusinessWeek, he spoke about creating an MMO to complement an upcoming film, codenamed Project 880: "My next project - which I'm currently writing the shooting draft for - is going to be this completely crazy balls-out sci-fi flick. The plan is to develop an MMO that takes place in the same universe and release it a little while before the theatrical release. That way people can start playing around and learning about this new world. Then we present a narrative in it with the movie."
Cameron's interest in MMOs has apparently been fuelled by his recent appointment to the board of Multiverse, a company that aims to help independent developers create MMOs. He says: "So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level. I want to see developers create games in which players can add to the worlds as they go along, so you can see what hundreds of thousands of people in this game environment can create. It's like each is being handed a toolset.... Instead of creating a $50 million game, you're creating $2 million games and letting them grow themselves."
Laudable stuff. But you would be advised not to hold your breath in anticipation of this crossover masterpiece - Cameron also said that Project 880 won't see the light of day until 2008. There has been a welter of speculation about the game/film's real title, since Cameron has previously talked about his current movie projects, telling film site comingsoon.net: "We're in preproduction now on a movie called Battle Angel, which is based on a Japanese manga series of graphic novels by an artist named Yukito Kishiro." And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron is also working on a film called Avatar. Could that be Project 880's real name? Time will tell.
I have my doubts on this one.
