Hi guys, i purchased the 20GB iPod when they were fairly new (and 300 hundred dollars) and about a half a year later stepped on it accidentaly.. Unfourtanately the screen cracked and it has been sitting collecting dust on my shelve for the last year and a half. This is due to Best Buy telling me that it would cost $150 to repair which i opted not doing. I was wondering what you would do besides buy a new iPod. I know they sell screens but are they difficult installing. Any replies are appreciated. Thanks

I suggest to buy an iPod nano 2GB. Nothing else.
Edit: LoL I misread it, didn't know you didn't want to buy a new iPod, anyways either way, I personally think buying a new iPod is best.

I know you said not to suggest this, but I will. Buy an new Ipod.
There are many other options to mp3 players. If you are looking to replace the screen on an old model, why not just get a new, different brand player? They are extremely cheap now and many have better features than the iPod.

Buy an iPod until Sony fixes their SonicStage to something people would actually like. (Not that I have a problem with it.) Then get a Sony to whatever you favor, tinyness, memory, or stylish.
I'm a big Sony fan so I might as well just buy a Sony. Plus, too many people have an iPod.
Break out of the ordinary.

I say buy a new mp3 player, in the meantime though u can take it apart like I did with mine. My old mini died 3 days after the warrenty expired an i was so sick of the thing freezing before that i just chose to crack it open and have some fun.

Now saying that, will it support Unicode text, OGG Vorbis, , AC3, or a few others? In particularly with some being VBR at over 320kbps.

yes i do have a psp since launch, but i still have the pewny 32mb card which i think that have what..7 songs on, and to buy a decent memory stick it is the price of maybe replacing my ipod which will hold 5000 or more.. i think that ill just sell it to some dumb kid for like 25 bucks and then save the rest for a new one
i suggest the Sony walkman... the one of the adverts. the sound quailty from it simply amazing. kicks the iPod in the face whit that, plus the battery life it better that the ipod too.
Buy Creative players - although the Zen Neeon is a bit of a doozy, the other players in the Zen range are low priced and good value. Creative are a pretty reputable brand name too.

I would look for some one around my area that is good with stuff like that and have them to replace the screen but would ask how much would it cost.
if it costed a lot i would probably buy a new one.

Since you're willing to replace it with something else, I'd suggest you try and replace the screen first . I had something similar(ish) happen when I dropped a portable DVD player and the screen cracked. I got a replacement screen on Ebay and switched it out. It really wasn't too hard or complex to do and the only problem I have now with it is that the screws in the back need to be re-tightened occasionally. An iPod's smaller but it shouldn't be that different. And you won't be any worse off if it doesn't help...

by the way...it's not to hard to replace the screen. Just get one of ebay. In fact, i have personally uninstalled a screen from mine for ur enjoyment....along with battery, and hard drive :P

Heh, it’s kind of like when you build a new computer, opening the case for the first time’s the hardest part.
Seriously though, you could try going to an electronics store and buying a set of really tiny screwdrivers but I’d suggest just taking it to WalMart/Target/similar to the jewelry department and asking someone working there to pop it open for you. They have tiny tools for watches and similar and have always been happy to help me out.

Well, most places do charge $150 for a new screen so there aren’t many places that would charge less. :(

Seeing how you don't have much to lose you should consider repairing the screen yourself....

yeah i wouldnt pay someone to repair the screen that is for sure, it will either work or not

i reccomend getting this
http://news.ferra.ru/images/52129_9258939470.jpg
i have one and they are very good, they are quite small, made of nice chrome metal, plays .avi, .mp3, .wav, .wma and can also view jpg images, it also has a flash card reader slot ("http://img2.pcpop.com/ProductImages/Big/0/32/000032004.jpg"), in built 20 gig hdd, no installtion cds required (so can basically use it as a usb hard drive too) a microphone and a camcorder on the back of it to make movies and to take pics and maximum battery life is 10 hours too so not bad at all!
it also has some "mophun" games on it too, you can get more on it by buying more from thier official site but the games arnt that good really, they are just basic flash type games..
it also has the capability with a cable that comes included with it to stream everything from the player to a television screen via rgb or scart, quite a nice feature
however the gmini400 (the version below)
shown here:
http://www.allnet-italia.it/archimag/av400/gmini400.jpg
the only diffrence is that this does not have the included camera/camcorder on the back of it like the archos 402 i showed before, however the with the archos 400 you can download doom and a sega genesis/game gear emulator for it from www.gmini400.com (they also have a movie converter on that site too that changes video files to the .avi format so you can watch them on the gmini400/402 device) that do not work on the gmini402 but do work on the gmini400
archos have some more similar products (that are more newer and up to date) at thier site www.archos.com however i picked these out especially because they have alot of cool functions, while remaining a small if ya know what i mean! They are also a little cheaper than the latest archos players (naturally)
oh and heres a comparison pic for all of you
