A university isn't the usual place to announce the first details on a new game, but then the Oddworld series has never been the usual franchise. The Cord Weekly reports (via Shacknews) that Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun announced his involvement in the creation of a new Oddworld game during a speech at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Braun didn't have too much to say in terms of, well, just about anything tangible -- gameplay, story, where it would fit in the Oddworld universe, etc. But he did do a lot of boasting about the technology being developed to make the game a reality, which he says will involve a "revolutionary" 3D animation system that will look as good as a CG movie. "The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," Braun said. "The tools are finally getting to the level where we can come out with a show and we can come up with a game."

Braun also had compliments for the folks at Oddworld Inhabitants that he's been working with. "They're such a talented group of people and I really trust their ability to create compelling content," he said. As for when this compelling content will see the light of day, Braun said it could be "years" before the game is finished. That probably explains why specific details were so light.

Yeah, it doesn't say if it's in the Oddworld universe, but nevertheless, they are brilliant, I love their games and think that any game made by them will at least carry brilliant humour and be of high quality whatever it is!

i decided to play the original oddworld games again, and while doing a bit of background research, i found this:

Jeff Braun, the man who co-founded Maxis with Will Wright, has confirmed that he is working with Oddworld Inhabitants on a new Oddworld game.

Speaking at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, Braun said of the team, "They're such a talented group of people and I really trust their ability to create compelling content." He said that the upcoming game will have a cinematic quality on a "one to one scale" with CGI-based films.

Braun praised the quality of the tools now available to devs. "The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects.... The tools are finally getting to the level where we can come out with a show and we can come up with a game", said Braun.

Braun apparently hinted that the next Oddworld game could be episodic.

The news may come as a surprise to some, as Oddworld Inhabitants supposedly retired from the games industry in 2005 to work in film on a property called Citizen Seige. The studio's co-founder Lorne Lanning savaged (http://news.spong.com/article/8571) the games industry, criticising an Electronic Arts business model that he said saw no marketing resources put behind Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (http://www.spong.com/game/11037993) because it wasn't multi-platform.

No platform for the upcoming Oddworld game has been announced and Braun said that a slow production schedule could make it "years" before the game sees release.

i love the oddworld games, and even though the whole "years" thing is a bit of a bummer, the article is from last year, so hopefully there arent many more to wait :-D

I was about to say YES and jump up when I realised I had in fact heard about this before.

I've merged the two threads to show just how few people are actually interested in this.. *sigh*
