Your Yearly WWE Fix The WWE is one of the most successful franchises in entertainment history. Not only did it pioneer the art of live “sports entertainment,” but it is also a powerhouse on television (http://www.ps3forums.com/#) and is on nearly every night. Recently, the WWE has been branching out into the wide world of video gaming. As a result, ever since the last generation the WWE series of games have been steadily improving. From the Legends of Wrestling to the Wrestlemania series, the market has literally been flooded with games based on the sports entertainment powerhouse.

The Smackdown! vs. Raw franchise is like the Madden of WWE games, and it is the only one to get an annual update (we’re not counting the Wrestlemania titles). Last year was rather big for the franchise, as it was the official jump to the current generation of consoles. However, each version of the game had some serious issues, and many started to doubt whether the series would be able to survive on the newer consoles. However, it seems the folks at THQ have been listening to the fans and are making some serious changes to the massively multiplatform release of Smackdown! vs. Raw. One of the biggest flaws across the console versions last year were the below average character animations and the poor A.I. The wrestlers felt clunky in the ring, and opponents were either insanely difficult or entirely too easy to beat. However, THQ is promising this time the A.I. will be a truer reflection of a given wrestler’s actions in the ring. For example, Ric Flair will not move around in the same manner as John Cena (as was often the case in the previous iteration). Characters will also sport a larger amount of detail in the console versions and will look a lot more like real wrestlers instead of models with faces and muscle definition painted on.

One of the biggest upgrades across the consoles will be the revamped tag team mode. Any fan of wrestling will tell you tag team matchups are among the most exciting to watch, both live and on television. Now, the tag team matchup will be among the most exciting matches to play as well. Instead of tag team matches simply meaning two players will work cooperatively against opponents, players will now be able to interact and work as a team to conquer opponents. For instance, if you are out of the ring, you now have more options than just sitting and waiting for a tag. You can now help pump up the crowd to make your opponent’s concentration falter or distract the referee if your teammate is about to pull an illegal move. Of the new out-of ring moves, the most notable is the ability to do illegal assists. Yes, it is technically cheating, but anyone who watches WWE on television knows that those who cheats most, wins most.

In addition to the revamped tag team mode, there will be substantial improvements to the Create-a-Wrestler mode. You will now be able to create your own finishing move, using elements from existing ones. The story mode this time around has been redubbed the “Road to Wrestlemania” mode. It will feature unique storylines for each major character as they overcome personal and professional hurdles on the way to the big event.
Because Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009 will be a multiplatform release, there are many special features each specific console will feature. The Wii version of the title is probably getting the most significant feature upgrade with the inclusion of online gameplay. Although the Wii isn’t known for its online capabilities, it is great to see the online feature is being offered. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are also getting new online features in the form of downloadable content. The folks at THQ have largely kept mum on what exactly this downloadable content will entail, but my best guess is it will included expanded past and present rosters, story elements, and perhaps some vintage arenas.

On the handheld side, there are also quite a few substantial updates. The Nintendo DS version is getting a major overhaul and is being developed by an entirely new team. The rock-paper-scissors approach to the finishing move is completely gone, and control will mainly utilize the D-pad and face buttons. The story mode will also feature a more RPG-like experience where you can interact with different wrestlers and upgrade their personal stats. The PSP version looks like it will mirror the console version of the game rather closely, although there is no word yet on if the PSP version will have online capabilities like its big brothers.

Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009 is looking to be a vast improvement for the series. It got off to a rather bumpy start on current gen consoles, but it looks like the series is catching up rather quickly, bringing the franchise up to speed. So, if you’re a WWE junkie and were a little anxious about how this year’s Smackdown! vs. Raw title might turn out, there is definitely some good news for you. This entry in the series looks to improve upon most of last year’s major issues, and you can bet that, no matter which version you are interested in, there will be many enjoyable hours of gameplay. So, are you ready to rumble?

they need to go back to basics, imo. character animations are something they need to address, but they need to work on the fundamentals of the animation before addressing how each wrestler moves. like high rope moves (how it's fixed), suplexes against the ropes (how both people slide if it reaches 'a wall'), an such.

THQ always promises a vast improvement but it really has been like Madden, in that it hasn't really improved much. and as much as I enjoy WWE even up until now, I'd have to say the show is a part of that stagnancy - their shows are pretty much not the same every week, the matches are getting predictable, etc.

I don't know, I'll have to check out reviews for this one.

Yea, i'm always pumped for this game each year. Although as time goes on i watch less and less wrestling, just got boring. I mean King Regal turning the lights out on the show what's next. Come on Vince start thinking again like you did in the attitude era, you can do better

King Regal's gone :P

but I do agree with you though, as it stands, it's getting boring. no interesting stables to speak of, too many 'monster' characters, title matches all the same.

only real interesting thing in WWE right now imo is Edge.

Haha I knew about Regal. Saw that and laughed. They try and do a stupid story line and it gets squashed. Just a sign, like when they were doing the Vince death angle and then Benoit died. That's telling you Vince do something that somebody will care about. I can't even express how awesome wrestling was back in the attitude era and what it has become now it's just a shadow of it's former self. The crap they have been putting out lately was acceptable back in the 80's that's about it

Chris Jerhico
Jeff Hardy
John Cena
Ken Kennedy
Randy Orton
Triple H
Undertaker

Wrestling keeps going down hill. The last time I watched it was nearly a year ago the story lines are crap. They got rid of angle and that was a huge mistake. Stone cold steve austin was my fav wrestler and it was great when the rock was in it. What happened to regal?? I heard he got suspended for 6 months.

i'll get this if i'm able to sell my copy of 08. IMO, WWE: Here Comes the Pain was the best. i enjoyed that game a lot more than i enjoyed the Raw VS. Smackdown series combined. btw, when is this coming out?

I have 07 which is the best wrestling game ever made. The 360 version, I mean(PS2 version was just plain bad in comparison).
I bought 08 but returned it after playing for 30 minutes. It sucked, so to say.

I don't have high hopes for 09.

I skipped 08 because I didn't see much progress from 07, I might get 09 tho, only because I am big WWE fan.

It's the Tony Hawks of wrestling games

It needs a new engine and needs to be built from the ground up, every game in the franchise feel and plays the same even if they do try different things each time they all feel the same, they also really need to stop them from sliding around the ring like they're on ice.

WWF No Mercy was the only good wrestling game in terms of gameplay. After that all the other wrestling games suck (including wrestling itself). That is why I stoped watching it a long time ago. However, I will consider getting a wrestling game if it plays like No Mercy (fun gameplay). The game I'm looking forward to buy is UFC 2009..... but thats mma

I pretty much stopped watching after Stone Cold left or got the boot one of them. If I were to watch it now I wouldn't know who anybody is they added so many new people to it I don't know who's who. I have always been a fan of the games though I just might pick this up for the PS3.

During the Attitude Era I was a huge wrestling entertainment fan STONE COLD, The Rock, The Undertaker were great then I still miss that Badass Undertaker when he would come on his bike lol.

Back to the topic, '08 was a disappointment the only good thing was extreme rules match and jeff hardy.

Now in Smackdown vs raw 2009 there is going to be a very cool realistic tag team match.YAY I can't wait I hope it would be better than all the SVRs

this franchise needs to be built from the ground up, it isnt next gen, it's old gen with smoother graphics, unless i hear amazing things it will be a miss for me.

I haven't watched wrestling in a long time but I still play the games. Although I didn't get 08 cause I wasn't interested. But by the talks of everyone I think i made a good choice in not getting 08. I will get this game however cause I need some games to build my ps3 game collection.
