While Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved has provided something of a shadow over the rest of the games on Xbox Live Arcade, if you look just a bit under the surface you'll find a group of classic Midway titles like Gauntlet and Smash T.V. doing well and making gamers happy with online play added. And now, Midway is ready to add a new bunch of titles to the service, with Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Cyberball, Root Beer Tapper, Paperboy and Defender on the way.

Given the many Midway Arcade Treasures compilation titles released over the past few years, in a sense the company is competing with itself by allowing customers to buy just the classic games they want instead of a pack of games, some of which they may not be interested in. But assuming these games perform well, we expect to see a plethora of classic games show up on Live Arcade soon.

No specific release dates have been announced for these five titles.
I didn't know where to post this, to that Paperboy topic or make new one. I thought this is better and Paperboy topic should be locked.

Interesting choices, no? Already we had the classic arcade games - Robotron, Joust and Gaulett, in this collection of arcade games. Why won't the programmers just make the entire Midway Arcade Treasure line of games compatiable with the XB360 instead?

The Arcade has so much potential.

Mortal Kombat!? *Swoon*
Sony needs a service like this. If Streets of Rage 2 ever makes it to Xbox Arcade, complete with online co-op, I might just consider buying an Xbox 360 for myself.

i will be honest here..i don't have an xbox 360, and maybe the main reason to explain this is because the best games of this system are the live arcade ones.. and my tastes fit better in a playstation but that another matter

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3= got it on snes
Cyberball= what ever
Root Beer= sounds dumb
Tapper= diddo
Paperboy=ok i did not buy a 400$ console to play something from when i was a kid
Defender = did not buy a 400$ console to play something my dad did as a kid.

XBL arcade, is a broken moddel, these games were public domain, whare do they get off charging people for 30 year old softweare. XBL arcade needs a wake up call from sony. we should be playing real games. The sad part is rich people support this junk(because there are no real games out) so m$ thinks people are buying into it.

We should be getting dreamcast games, or xbox 1 games, or
omg fresh content god forbid m$ think for once.

Playing online co-op on the Arcade is sweet. I'd gladly pay $5-10 for these classic games on the Arcade.

There are original games on it too. Geometry Wars and Marble Blast Ultra are good examples, and there's a wacky basketball game built using the Unreal Engine coming to the Arcade soon.

Umm, please do some research before you post.

There is a ton of what you could call "fresh content" on Xbox Live Arcade or coming too it

Outpost Kaloki
Marble Blast Ultra
Geometry Wars
Wik Fable of Souls
Jewel Quest
Feeding Frenzy
Astro Pop

That is just the start of it. They have over 80 developers making games for the Xbox Live Arcade right now. Some old and a lot more new.

Its really a nice balence. They are getting the old classics that we love and a bunch of new titles that are interesting and unique.

To criticize Xbox Live Arcade like you have done so only goes to show that you have not used it and are refusing to open your eyes up to possibility that you might just enjoy it.

Developers are on it because, it would take them a mear day with 3 men to make a title with nothing but profit coming back. Any game that would take that much effort should not be on a next gen system, at all.

Any fool with 2 weeks and flash MX could pull the same results off, so sure developers want some. So what happens, we get what we are getting now, developers only wanting to do these low risk games and push the real games back for when they see more marketshare.

In the end, the gamer suffers. Making a game fun, and adictive, is only 2/3 of the solution visualls, need to be there as well. Can you tell me why marvel vs capcom 2 would have been a bad choice against streat fighter 2, or whatever they are pushing on people.

I mean, besides the fact, its all flash games, and that would just be too hard for little old XBL arcade. It would not take much for Sony to squash arcade. even nintendo can do it if they offer n64 games which are generations ahead of XBL arcade.

Yes, I do have arcade, yes, I have them all downloaded, I got the pool one free with XBL starter kit, AND YES, they could be allot better or free.

They are instant messenger, or cellphone games, not next gen titles, or even reasonably good. So, they can brag on geometry wars being the next halo, I say, I want, the next halo, stop giving us tetris junk.

Wait, you have the arcade games downloaded (as in, you payed for them) yet you feel this "strongly" about Xbox Live Arcade, obviously you don't feel strongly enough about this or you wouldn't have...

mrtea

I downloded the demos to be open minded the only full one i have is the one that was free with XBL kit. N64 games maybe worth a small fee, but not what XBL is dishing out however.

XBL arcade games stink, its like paying for pong when you can make pong in 20 min. The price is 100x the effort, It is a scam to get people to pay for pictures the same as it is to pay for something so low quality. To me if you are willing to buy a picture, theme, 30 year old game on live then you truely have way too much $, and not enough common sense.

These are the same people, I imagine who pay, for elvis's toothbrush on ebay. I have some plastic spoons, anyone interested in buying?

Aleman

Go play Geometry Wars or Marble Blast and we'll see if you still say XBLA games are low quality.

Now, really, first off marble blast graphically still glitches by glass, and really is not hot to begin with. there is relatively no geometry to speak of, all flat wide open, with a ball in the middle.

As for GW, its fun but how can you say its anything visually , they could not even put a decent 2d static background behind it . It is, a grid with wave effects, and horrid pixel sprites randomly flopping around, someone can do in basic.

Your not talking to a PS3 only fan, who hates xbox360, and all to do with it. I love 360, but nothing is perfect and live arcade is a rip off that no one notices for some reason. Oh, I know why, because like live there is no other model to compare it to. Just like how everyone thinks the media functions are awesome. The music is, the pics are, but the video is shameful from every angle.

Geometry wars is the best spent 5 dollars EVER. Also, they don't have games as simple as pong, they have new innovative titles and classics. If you don't like them, don't buy them. IF YOU HAVE NOT USED THE ARCADE SERVICE OR HAVNT PLAYED ANY OF THE ARCADE TITLES, YOU HAVE NO REASON TO COMPLAIN. If u use it and don;t like it, thats you opinion. If you havnt used it, you're opinion doen't really count. trust me, I learned the hard way. I used to hate M$ and now i own a 360.

mrtea
03-03-2006, 04:51
No, I played the demos, just think people have a right to ask for something visually from next gen, or atleast from my generation.

No one should get offended either, the real games are being pushed back because of arcade, and no one is even questioning why they do not look decent.

I'm not even going to bother with this discussion. You lost all credibility with this statement:

"As for GW, its fun but how can you say its anything visually"

Also, fun, and adictive, is easy to nail, Pong is fun, and adictive, so is tetris, but that is only part of thee equation. If people really want that junk go buy attari, gameboy nes, or run an emulater, 98% of it is public domain.

I, am not saying we should kill live or arcade, but how about some quality titles please. If there is something wrong with asking for up to date graphics, and fun then I must have missed the new deffinition of gamer. If it is "take anything m$ gives you and like it" Then, I think, I will be old school.

Wow, you so underestimate just how hard game development is. Between this comment and your comment that it only takes 3 men a few days shows you ignorance, a lot...

You talk about wanting quality titles. Sorry, but what do you call a 60 level puzzle game with 3 bonus games included? How about a 60 level game with a 12 level multiplayer game? Thats Wik and Marble Blast right there.

This isn't take anything MS gives you, this is MS working with 3rd parties to bring a lot of fun old and new games for low cost to their gamers. Its also MS opening up game development to a bunch of small studios that would otherwise have to spend months or years trying to get Vulture Capital funding and a publishing contract that costs them any potential profit they might make off their first 3 titles.

As for your comments about the PS3 using flash blowing away the 360, hate to point it out, but there are currently 2 games on the Xbox360 Live Arcade that are already running on Flash. MS licensed it for use with Xbox360 Live Arcade.

While you may consider Pong and Tetris junk, if they were on Live Arcade I would buy both of them. Pong in particular is an old classic that I would love to be able to play over Xbox Live with all my friends spread out across the world or just not in my house at any given time. Just like Guantlet and several other older games on Xbox Live Arcade.

In one sentence you talk about people who want to play old games should go and just use the old console, then you say that Nintendo has something in letting people play old games downloaded onto the revolution that will blow away Live Arcade, so which is it? Either you want to play old games on a new console, or you don't. You can't have it both ways.

Speaking of Nintendo's solution, it has a huge limitation, that being, it is only accessible to old games that were on Nintendo systems.

With Xbox Live, MS has opened it up to games from the old Arcade systems, to games on the NES, Master System, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64, Saturn, Turbo Graphix 16, PCEngine, PCFX, Game Gear, Gameboy, PC, etc....

Mrtea, one final question. What is your gamertag?

how much MS pts will Mortal Kombat cost?

Around 800 per game, give or take. I still wanna know why can't the programmers just make Midway Arcade Treasures compatiable with the XBox 360. http://www.smileypad.com/v202/Cache/Misc/Typing.gif So far most of the games in the Live Arcade collection came from this series of classic arcade games.
