!!! Holy!! So it is real then?? Something worries me though... look at all those vents... I guess one of the many worries may come to pass, the next gen consoles are gonna run HOT. There's no reason for that much venting if they run cool, I was hoping the next gen consoles would be relatively cool... so I wouldn't have a tornado sitting underneath my TV...
Still very cool... doesn't look fake either; the new one, that is. Has it all come together?? Or are we setting ourselves up for the biggest psyche in gaming in the last 3 years??

You know, I just realized something... this thing kinda reminds me of the apple stuff. Particularlly the vents and the metalic finish. Don't you think?? Still not that bad an effort on M$'s part. I hope it's not actually metal though... it'd be like a rock carrying it around.

Well... ... yeah, good point. ^^
Still it shouldn't weigh a lot, simply by virtue, no?? I dunno, this next gen it looks like the consoles are gonna run HOT and HEAVY. How terribly inappropriate. ^^
Seriously, though, I am a bit concerned about those 2 aspects and how they'll affect gaming. The last thing I want is another space heater in my room (my PC). I dunno... I'm prolly just worried about nothing.
I'm not realy thrilled with that design, but it's definately better from the current Xbox, but then again sometimes pictures can't do any justice, so i'll wait for more detailed ones or some video footage with more detail. It look smaller also, it seems to me about ps2 size this time (not the slim one)

Well if thats the design....its not bad...though its not good ether...well I guess we can say that there isn't going to be a harddrive in it right out of the box (meaning you have to buy one).
The design doesn't fit me...I really wonder though....well anyway, we'll see on May 12th.

They may sell HD with the bundle you never know.. theres said 2 be a premium and a basic model..
Playstation3X
04-23-2005, 19:05
i definately want the HD because i didn't pick up a 53inch HD TV for nothing. I pray that it does come HD ready because it would make more sales in my opinion and since everyone is slowly getting HD TV's so it would be a better go for Microsoft. Im tired so if i made no sense just shoot me lol.
bustabusta196
04-23-2005, 19:08
No.. not High Def... HD in my sentence stood for HardDrive.. should of said HDD.. my bad.
Xbox360 without a doubt will have HD out of the box.. they are setting a standard for developers to produce at a certain resoultion i think 720p or something idk..
Makaveli_786
04-23-2005, 19:36
Yeah 720p is what all games should be hitting definetly man, its less than 1024x768 which is what PC games have been using for nearly 5 years so I don't see why not, its harder to hide tricks in higher resolution though, I think Sony might push 1080p later in the PS3's life to help sell 1080p TV's that theyr planning on putting out.

Just a clarification, 720p is significantly higher res than 1024x768
720p is 1280x720
That is approximately 25% more screen space.

I would give the design 8/10. I dont think microsoft hit a home-run with this design although I think they did with the size. really, WOW. too bad for them, now there isnt going to be as much anticipation as there was going to be on the MTV show...
Makaveli_786
04-23-2005, 22:08
It's not all that big, I hope Sony and Nintendo do something slim linish like the PSTwo though, slim is in...
@Siren, yeah my mistake that whole post was off, its lower than 1600x1200 which is what games have been using for ages, man games peak at 2048x1536 so 720p is nothing big and 1280x720 looks superior on paper but it barely cuts above 1024x768 on the screen, check it out on a game(though a lot of games don't have 1280x720)

Take into consideration the DVD drive into the proportions... the drive is roughly half the deisgn's width... so it should be roughly around the size of a PS2... looks a little taller than a PS2 though... can't really comment on the depth... though if you wanna be picky you could count the holes on the ven and extrapolate the relative size pretty well I'd imagine.

Thats why that pic is most likely an early concept because if that was the real one than it would be about 6-8in thick. If you scale at the thickness of a hard drive (1-2in) the side comes out to a good 6 inches. The other pic looks smaller.
Makaveli_786
04-23-2005, 23:36
Now I see what your getting at, its very very thick, looks a lot thicker than the original PS2 design and like 5 slimline PSTwo's stacked.
muchuukuri
04-23-2005, 23:51
Now, what if you're using a laptop HDD?? Or an iPod HDD?? Those numbers don't hold. It definately looks taller than a PS2, but I wouldn't say it's 6-8 inches.

Usually when a bogus picture of the next Xbox comes out, Siren is quick to deny it. Could the fact the he did not deny this one mean he knows it is close to the truth?
Makaveli_786
04-23-2005, 23:59
From the early rumors theyr using a HDD which doubles as a MP3 or MP4 player, seems like a decent idea but it'll probably cost a bomb and look ten times crappier than the ipod not to mention the interface, I'd like the ability to put in my own HDD or buy the PC hybrid with the HDD built in
muchuukuri
04-24-2005, 00:04
Problem is... that's not economical for M$. They KNOW they'll get the previous hardcore Xboxers to buy the "xPod", as it's been dubbed, because the WANT HDD, while the average user will go 'Oh, it gives me functionality in the X2 AND it's an iPod and it's from M$... and you know they make good stuff" (whether that's true or not... I'll leave it alone), so M$ can get a number of average consumers to sign up. THEN they can integrate their version if iTunes into Xbox live under Microtrasactions and rake in a fortune... not only that, but they stick it to prolly their most feared desktop competitor Apple (for those that'll argue... linux is more likely the biggest fear in the server market).

04-24-2005, 00:28
Man are you kidding, Sony own like 60% of the songs on the globe and I recently bought a sexy NW-HD3, theyr half the size of the Ipod have MORE than twice as much batterylife, have better sound and can store twice as many songs but they haven't even put a PATCH on the Ipod, for a company like MS to actually put a patch into Apple's market is a joke man, its reported abut 60% of MS employees who work at MS's Redmond plant have Ipod's and there are so many Ipod's at Redmond Billy Goats is about to blow a gasket, seriously MS will not even put a patch into Apple's anything.
One thing you've got to realize with MS is they buy theyr stuff off third parties, if they develop an Ipod competitor it will cost them more because theyr not making it themselves and therefore they will have to sell it at a higher price, this being MS you can make absolutely certain the product won't be of exceeding quality and won't cut it especially in an environment with experienced companies like Sony, Apple and iRiver battling it out with such great producsts, as an MP3 player its more than suffice to say it won't cut it, now if you use it solely as a HDD your paying say 500 dollars for a 60GB HDD.. man you can buy a 400GB HDD for 200 dollars, its really a no brainer, lets hope MS don't get any smart ideas about HDD's its not good news for the consumers.
Here's what the NW-HD3 looks like, pretty isn't it?

DOn't get me wrong Mak... I don't mean to say that WILL happen, though I do think I forgot to mention that :s, I'm just trying to point out the milking logic M$ might be employing... I seriously doubt M$ can even touch the iPod industry every attempt they've made at a digital media distriubtion concept has gone down the toilet, but the X2 dynamic could be very different and M$ may be considering that.
Does Sony really own 60%?? Maybe like 30 or 40.
I have heard about the iPods at Redmond... I hear many of the owners disguise their iPods as something else so the higher ups don't get mad. ^^
EDIT:: By the way does it play mp3s?? Are they obfusicated or can I just straight up add them? Also, if they're obfusicated is their a hack?? I think I recall hearing about one, but I'm not sure.
Makaveli_786
04-24-2005, 00:44
Na man it supports MP3 off the fly, I dunno about 60% but I know they own an incredible amount through partnerships and whatnot, man they own 40% of Hollywood and I think more than 40% of the movies made, Sony can cause a shift off the fly if they wanted to put they seriously have not even scratched the Ipod, if MS can pull it off then they better be giving away free porn stars with every Xpod because theyr selling an inferior product for more money, even the dedicated X-boys wont fall for that ploy.. an interesting idea but man I'll be damned if it works, lol there was a rumor Billy Goats himself owns an Ipod :D

LOL WTF man is this a dreamcast clone, last gen they tried to copy Sony by launching later and with a big ad campaign and they lost, they should be trying to copy Sony again but theyr doing the whole MTV and E3 thing just like Sega did with the DC, supposedly the Xbox 360 plays inferior DVD-9's compared to te PS3's BD-DVD just like DC used customzied 1GB CD's while the PS2 used DVD's... this is looking more and more like the Sega vs. Sony thing daily...

I have to disagree with that, if you follow a follower you won't get anywhere, by putting out an underpowered inferior console like Sega did how will they overcome Sony, if they follow Sony and put out something like the PS2 with BD-DVD playback and superior graphics to the preliminary competition they'll do well, granted the Playstation brand is much more settled than the Xbox brand following Sony would work better than following Sega.

It's not really all that ugly, the colours not nice but they will release it in other colours I bet, 64MB seems like a good size and its pretty small too, looks good to me.
But the thing is the memory card looks really retro while the console is more sleek. It just doesnt seem like it would look good to me.
Makaveli_786
04-25-2005, 19:22
It looks kind of old while the console looks fururistic but I think thats an old picture, there are two pictures of the console, one is made of plastic and another looks like its made out of sleek metal, I like the sleek metal looking model and I hope they release that version and an identical looking memory card, I think they'll go that path as well
tomdom69
04-25-2005, 22:08
ok everybody can see that it says 64......... ok so that confirms that the memory will come in different sizes.
if it only comes in one size, why would they bother to write the size on it?
if it only comes in one size, why would they bother to write the size on it?
ps2's memory cards had 8MB written on them even before bigger memory cards were avaible. However it's possible different sizes will be avaible at launch if not larger third party memory cards will come out soon after if there is a demand for a larger card offcourse.
If anybody can make a good geuss on how much data we will need to store per game please share your toughts.

The binary will probably be bigger but not much bigger, maybe about 0.5-4MB's.
Just a clarification, 720p is significantly higher res than 1024x768
720p is 1280x720
That is approximately 25% more screen space.
A bit late coming, but sorry siren, but you are net entirely correct (also, don't confuse sceen "space" with resolution - the two are totally unrelated). Anyway...
1024 x 768 = 786,432 pixels
1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels
This equates to just 17% more pixels screen-for-screen. You also fail to mention the fact that the number of horizontal lines is one of the most important factors in resolution, as they eye more easily picks up the "jaggies". In this respect, the PC resolution of 1024 x 768 is actually better.
When all is said and done though, 720p does NOT represent a significant leap is visual quality or clarity over and above said PC resolution.
Unless you take into account the recent patent around the Xbox2's eDram that allows for Full Screen AA with no real impact on the GPU and no work from the developers as far as I have heard.
Also on the PC in 1024x768 you are stuck in 4x3. Thus you end up with more UI overlaying into the center area of the screen, whereas, with 1280x720 you now have a widescreen display. Thus it is easier for developers to move the UI out of the main field of vision when and where needed.
In the lower resolution of 1024x768 more Jaggies will be visible as you can see more of the individual pixels. As you increase resolution and thus the number of horizontal lines, you increase pixel density (unless increases in resolution also result in increases in screen size), thus you will have more oppertunities for "jaggies" (which AA will virtually eliminate anyways), but you will have less oppertunities to see them as they are a lot closer together.
Using your logic, if you drop the resolution down to 800x600 you will see even less Jaggies. Yes there will be less, but the ones you see will be a lot bigger and more obvious.
Thegamingdwarf
05-04-2005, 18:04
So is it better to have few big jaggies or lots of little ones?
you can never do away with jaggies using the current technology for television
It is simply impossible because the picture itself is made out of squares. But you CAN make the jaggies so small that you cant see them anymore
You can also use techniques like AA that help blend the spots that would have jaggies into the picture.
Generall people would rather have more smaller ones. Hence why so many gamers prefer to run in 1600x1200 if their system is powerful enough.
Some fair comments in other parts of your post, but aspect ratio and ability to move the UI has nothing to do with resolution. OK, lets assume that we have two equivalent screens, fixed screen height (30cm), just different aspects:
1) 4:3 = 40 cm x 30 cm = 1200 cm2 = 655 pixels/cm2
2) 16:9 = 53.3 cm x 30 cm = 1599 cm2 = 576 pixels/cm2
So as you can see, screen-for-screen, the wider aspect ratio of the High Def display and the lower number of lines actually goes against it, resulting in a 12% lower pixel density.
The human eye picks up horizontal jaggies much more than vertical ones, which is why I disagreed with your comment that a 720p display is significantly higher resolution than a 1024 x 768 PC monitor. I do however acknowledge that FSAA should all but eliminate these horrors!
We could go on forever about this, because it's not just native resolution, but dot-pitch, physical screen size, and aspect ratio that all play a part in the qualty of a display. A low resolution on a large screen will look blocky, while a high resolution on a small screen will be hard to see. Ultimately, yes, we all want 42" 1080p capable High Def displays, and then all of this becomes a non-issue!!
Part of the reason why the human eye has traditionally picked up the horizontal Jaggies is because of how ScanLines in a TV work.
Traditional Analog TV's display interlaced. This means that you have the odd and even lines alternating upwards of 30 times a second (based on NTSC vs PAL mainly). This can create the appearance of more horizontal jaggies than are really there and emphasize the ones that are there.
Progressive displays like most modern computer monitors, DLP projectors, and HDTV's don't display interlaced. thus you have square pixels which help eliminate them.
In the Dimensions you laid out for the screen you chose a screen with the same verticle height, not the same size screen. A screens size is measured on an angle between 2 opposing corners.
In general though, higher resolution is better.
In the Dimensions you laid out for the screen you chose a screen with the same verticle height, not the same size screen. A screens size is measured on an angle between 2 opposing corners
Yes, and they shouldn't measure like that as it's pointless and misleading! A 29" 4:3 TV absolutely dwarfs a 28" 16:9 TV, despite the apparently small 1" difference.
The reason I chose the same screen height is because that's the only way to truly illustrate that screen-for-screen, a 720p high-def 16:9 display has a lower pixel density compared to a 1024 x 768 4:3 PC display.
Sharp Announces Production of Blu-ray Diodes
By: Justin Pinter
Sharp has announced its participation in the production of Blu-ray diodes. According to a Reuters report, Sharp has set up a new factory in Japan and plans to initially produce 150,000 diodes every month.
These diodes will be crucial to the production of PS3's and other Blu-ray and HD-DVD hardware. With the production rate up and diodes becoming more available, Blu-ray/PS3's will be able to drop lower in price and hopefully will appeal to more consumers.

Kinda short? The last sentence is unnecessary, so if I remove that there isn't much article left.
I think it would be a good idea to include something about how the Blu-ray diode shortages is what caused the PS3 to be delayed, to launch with fewer units etc.
And following from this you can say how many units were actually available, and mention the European launch.
Also mention the shipment targets of 2 million worldwide by year end, and 6 million by March 2007.
Padding out your articles is always a good practise :)
(PS: how would Blu-ray diode production help HD-DVD hardware production?)
Good points Bhav. Anyone can write 2-3 sentances stating facts of what happened/was announced, but it takes a good journalist to bring in relevant information which enhances the informational experience of the reader =)
are we ditching this article?
There was a tonne of info available to pad this one out, but we've missed the boat now so I say it should be dropped.

Justin, why did you completely ignore my suggestions?
